Keep an eye out for the striking Common Merganser at the Great Backyard Bird Count at the Salisbury Zoo! With their sharp bills and vibrant heads, these beauties are sure to catch your attention as they make their winter appearance.

Young Common Mergansers leave their nest hole within a day or so of hatching. The flightless chicks leap from the nest entrance and tumble to the forest floor. The mother protects the chicks, but they catch all of their own food. They start by diving for aquatic insects and switch over to fish at about 12 days old.

Keep your eyes peeled, both high and low, for the Turkey Vulture at the Great Backyard Bird Count at the Salisbury Zoo this Saturday!

The Turkey Vulture uses its sense of smell to locate carrion. The part of its brain responsible for processing smells is particularly large, compared to other birds. Its heightened ability to detect odors—it can detect just a few parts per trillion—allows it to find dead animals below a forest canopy. The Turkey Vulture maintains stability and lift at low altitudes by holding its wings up in a slight dihedral (V-shape) and teetering from side to side while flying. It flies low to the ground to pick up the scent of dead animals.

I may be hard to spot, but if you listen closely, you might hear me! Tune in this Saturday at the Great Backyard Bird Count at the Salisbury Zoo —you might just hear the Red-bellied Woodpecker!

You may sometimes see Red-bellied Woodpeckers wedge large nuts into bark crevices, then whack them into manageable pieces using their beaks. They also use cracks in trees and fence posts to store food for later in the year, a habit it shares with other woodpeckers in its genus.

The Great Backyard Bird Count at the Salisbury Zoo is happening next week! One of the exciting highlights of this winter’s count is the elusive Eastern Screech Owl! 🦉

Like most raptors, male Eastern Screech-Owls are smaller than females, and are more agile fliers and hunters. The female doesn’t hunt while on the nest; she and the chicks depend on food brought them by the male. Though the male is smaller, his voice is deeper than the female’s

The Great Backyard Bird Count at the Salisbury Zoo is less than one week away!
Are you ready to spot some feathered friends? One of the stars of this winter's count is the Junco!

Juncos are the "snowbirds" of the middle latitudes. Over most of the eastern United States, they appear as winter sets in, and then retreat northward each spring. Other juncos are year-round residents, retreating into woodlands during the breeding season, or, like those of the Appalachian Mountains, moving to higher elevations during the warmer months.
