Horses Are Close Relatives to Rhinos! 🐴🦏

Surprising, right? Despite their differences, horses and rhinos are considered close relatives because they both belong to a group of mammals with an odd number of toes, known as Perissodactyla.

Horses are also closely related to donkeys and zebras, though they have different numbers of chromosomes. Interestingly, horses, donkeys, and zebras can reproduce together, but their offspring (like mules or zonkeys) are usually sterile.

Nature never ceases to amaze us with its unexpected connections!

Twin Horses: A Rare Miracle! 🐴✨

Unlike most mammals, horses rarely carry twin pregnancies successfully. In fact, vets often reduce one fetus to give the other a better chance at survival since a mare’s body usually cannot nourish two foals at once.

However, there have been rare exceptions, like the famous Arabian twin colts, Majus ZF and Majjcian ZF, who both developed inside a single placenta and defied the odds by being born healthy.

These rare cases remind us of the incredible resilience and unpredictability of nature!

While the process sparked heated debates, it opened the door to exploring new possibilities in equine breeding, including cloning stallions in the future.

Old Billy: The Oldest Horse

The oldest horse in the world, Old Billy, lived to an incredible 62 years! Born in 1760 in Woolston, Lancashire, England, Old Billy was a Shire-type horse with a brown coat and a white blaze. His exact breed remains uncertain, but his long life made him famous for outliving all other horses of his time. He passed away in 1822 of old age.

Wild Horses No Longer Exist

Wild horses no longer exist! While you might see horses like American Mustangs or Australian Brumbies roaming free, they are actually feral—descendants of domesticated horses that returned to the wild. For years, the Przewalski’s horse was considered the last true wild horse. However, in 2018, DNA analysis revealed that these horses are also descendants of domesticated horses kept by the ancient Botai culture over 6,000 years ago. This discovery reshaped our understanding of equine history!

In Wilbur, Washington, it's illegal to ride an "ugly" horse! While no one knows exactly how this law came to be, violating it could land you a $300 fine. Meanwhile, in Marshalltown, Iowa, another quirky law prohibits horses from eating fire hydrants. It's unclear how often these rules are enforced, but they sure give us something to laugh about!

Fastest Horse Sprint Speed

The fastest horse sprint speed ever recorded is an astonishing 55 mph (88.5 kph)! This feat was achieved in 2005 by a Quarter Horse named A Long Goodbye during a quarter-mile race, which he completed in just 20.686 seconds. While Quarter Horses excel at short sprints, Thoroughbreds dominate longer distances, maintaining speeds of 40-44 mph (64-70 kph) for short stretches. By comparison, most horses max out at 20-30 mph (32-48.5 kph). And for fun trivia: a horse typically generates about 1 horsepower—a term inspired by their strength!

The answer is simple: because horses teach kids more than any iPad, social media influencer, or textbook ever could.

Yes, you’re right—horses are relentless in every way. They demand your time, energy, and finances. They can test your patience, challenge your emotions, and consume you entirely. But look at what they give in return.

Horses teach my child skills no technology, trendy outfit, or peer group could ever provide:

• Nonverbal Communication: Learning to “speak” with a 1,200-pound animal without words develops awareness, empathy, and understanding.

Many don’t believe equestrian activities qualify as a sport. To that, I can only say: spend a day in the barn. The physical demands of mucking stalls, lifting hay bales, and conditioning a horse are real. Riding itself is a full-body workout that requires balance, strength, and coordination. These kids spend more time practicing their skills than most athletes on the planet.

But the mental aspect is just as significant. Equestrianism teaches kids how to master pressure, manage performance anxiety, and handle adversity with grace. Those are skills they’ll carry into every aspect of life.

I would rather my child be so consumed by the living, breathing responsibilities of horses than searching for validation on social media, in peer groups, or, worse, through harmful substances.

Horses are an investment—not just in riding lessons, vet bills, and show fees—but in my child’s future. I’d rather spend my money on building her character, teaching her discipline, and giving her life skills than on fleeting trends or technology that will soon be outdated.

Yes, horses are expensive. Yes, they’re challenging. But they’re also one of the greatest gifts I can give my child. Because when I look at her, I don’t just see a rider—I see a confident, capable, compassionate human being. And for that, horses are worth every penny.
