Please check to see if you have been microchipped elsewhere, and have the SAVE THIS LIFE microchip. This is not the microchip we use here, but if you have been microchipped elsewhere, it is possible that you have this particular microchip so please check your records. Please see the picture as to how to proceed to register with another microchip company and still keep your current microchip if you have the Save This Life microchip.

And this is why we advocate for being on flea and tick prevention (and heartworm) year-round if you are in an endemic area. One of our clients found this tick today and we are still pulling ticks off of patients right now. It only takes one tick to transmit disease.

Just a little information for all of those smushy faced dog lovers...
Brachiocephalic dogs many times have difficulty breathing and panting off excess heat which makes them more prone to heat stroke as well as other respiratory issues. Brachycephalic syndrome is made up of 3 components: stenotic nares which means closed nostrils, everted saccules which are at the back of the throat and a long soft palate. These 3 things combined can make for these difficulties and one of these things that can be easy to fix and help a patient tremendously with breathing is stenotic nare surgery. This entails removing a section of the skin from each nostril enabling better airflow. The patients wake up from surgery being able to breathe better immediately. In severe cases the other components of brachycephalic syndrome would need to be addressed as well. But many times stenotic nare surgery alone can make for a much better quality of life. This little Pug had surgery today and you can see the before and after pictures here.

Please read! Important information for pet owners!

What is H5N1?
H5N1, commonly known as avian influenza A or bird flu, is a highly pathogenic strain of influenza virus that primarily affects birds, but cases have recently been reported in wildlife, cattle, cats, and humans.

What do we know about the latest outbreak?
Recently H5N1 influenza cases have been reported in cats that have consumed contaminated commercial raw food diets, unpasteurized milk, or had contact with wild birds and cattle.

Precautions:
Consider discontinuing your pet’s raw diet. Even if their raw food is human grade, frozen, or freeze dried, this does not prevent the potential spread of pathogenic bacteria, parasites, or H5N1 that may be present in the food. Consider cooking your pet’s raw food and/or consulting your veterinarian about diet change.
Limit your pet’s access to wild birds that may be carrying the virus and avoid giving them raw milk.

What are the symptoms to watch out for in our pets?
Clinical signs in pets may include the following:
• Loss of appetite
• Lethargy
• Fever
• Neurologic signs (ataxia, circling, tremors, seizures, sudden blindness)
• Copious oculonasal discharge
• Difficulty breathing
We recommend seeking veterinary care if your pet shows any of these signs. If they are having any life-threatening symptoms (neurologic signs, seizures, difficulty breathing, or collapse) seek veterinary care immediately.

Can this cause illness in humans?
Yes, H5N1 can cause illness in humans. Current human infections have been linked to contact with infected cattle and wild birds. There is no current evidence of human to human transmission.

What is being done?
The CDC, FDA and USDA are closely monitoring cases as they develop. One voluntary product recall has been issued for contaminated raw food diets for cats & dogs. We are continuing to monitor this emerging virus.

UPDATE: ADOPTED TO A WONDERFUL FAMILY!
My name is Gertie and I am an approximately 6 year old spayed female long haired orange cat. I was dumped on the side of a gravel road. I am used to being indoors and being outside was so scary that I was too scared to move even when cars drove by. Luckily someone stopped for me, I was so happy that I ran right into the cat carrier because I knew I was finally safe. I was brought to Pets On The Shore Veterinary Hospital and examined/ tested negative for FIV and FELV and given my vaccines. I had horrible mats on my back from not being brushed and those were shaved off so I could be more comfortable. I am a very sweet girl who loves scratches under the chin. I am still a little nervous but I am realizing that I am now safe. I am looking for a new start and a new home that will love me. If interested, please call the office and we can have you come by and meet Gertie. Please share this post and all interested adopters must have their own pets up to date on annual examinations and vaccinations.

Our Story

Pets on The Shore Veterinary Hospital is a small animal practice with a relaxed atmosphere. In addition to seeing dog and cats, we are one of the few practices to see avian and exotics including reptiles, rabbits and some pocket pets. We have three exam rooms, on site laboratory, surgical suite, digital x-ray, and ultrasound. The office is situated on a large piece of property so there is plenty of room for walking your dogs.

Dr. Giza cares for dogs, cats, some exotics and pot belly pigs as well as provide acupuncture services for small animal and equine patients. Her interests include acupuncture, medicine and surgery (including some orthopedic surgeries). Dr. Giza graduated from University of California, Davis College of Veterinary Medicine in 2007. She lives in Cambridge, MD with her husband and entourage ...of horses, dogs and cats. Dr. Giza is coming to us from Layfield Veterinary Services and Pet's ER where she will continue a close working relationship with the doctors at both locations. She looks forward to meeting you and caring for your pets! We hope you’ll consider bringing your pet to meet us. Our friendly staff is always ready to assist in any way. We’re all about the animals, and we always have lots of cat treats and dog biscuits on hand.
