And for a peaceful Sunday morning......... the world's most patient pointer and persistent cat........... 😁
DOGS ON DRUGS
First question...... how did our dogs get to be OLD??? They were so young when they came to us as rescues. Tama and Misty were yearlings and Tate was about 2. Tama was feral. Misty was a Wild Child. And Tate is just "special". Our Lager had his dental the week before so isn't part of the Dogs Recovering from Drugs commentary.
Second comment........ just because our dogs are aging doesn't mean they've "matured" at all!
3rd observation........ good dental care is essential for long, healthy lives for both people and their animals.
4th observation......... all dogs react differently to the after-effects of anesthesia. Tate was a little "slow and bewildered". Misty was dazed and confused and didn't realize her tongue wasn't in its normal location. Tama was so anxious and confused (and vocal) that dear Dr. A at Olympus Cove Veterinary Clinic held and rocked her while Dr. T completed Misty's cleaning until I arrived for pick up.
Brushing a dog's teeth is way down near the bottom of my list for 'favorite things to do'. Mine don't welcome it as an activity that we can do together. I've heard about the specially-flavored toothpaste that dogs loooooove. Not My Dogs! I've heard about it being a calm bonding time between dog and person. Again..... Not My Dogs! The best I can do is dip a gauze sponge into coconut oil and use that to wipe over the gums/teeth. So far that seems to work. Then every couple of years I take them to the vet and ask them to fix my last several of years of neglect. Our dogs are all 'north of 10 years' and 2 of the 4 have lost one tooth over time.
However your decide to care for your dog's oral hygiene is really about what your dog will tolerate and how patient you are. In the long run it will help stave off periodontal disease,
pain, bad breath, and organ damage (bacteria that causes plaque to form can enter the bloodstream and spread to the heart, liver, kidneys).
Happy Dental Care Everyone❣️
Weather in Utah...... gotta love it! 😂 Our apricot & Granny Smith trees were in full bloom and the dogs were spending hours outside trying to consume all those sweet blossoms. I've had to pry a couple of dogs out of the old apricot tree years ago (yes, they can climb trees). And then.......... there was a mad rush for the door!
Morning Laugh....... Peg (in cone) is doing well with the Casa UPP gang. She's a little reserved but can finally go outside with them. She's even good with the cats. And Kohl LOVES her! After all, he's used to dogs with very short tails. Peg has a field-dock so comes with a built-in toy for him. 🤣 (hint - turn your volume on)
Little Orphan Annie arrived at Casa UPP earlier this week when the weather was beautiful. What a shock this morning. We've had ~3 feet of snow. Much higher than the little girl! Fortunately Old Man Friday was there to create a path back to the door. 😄
Beautiful Giselle came to us in April 2013 from Carbon Co AS.
She was a lovely tall girl, about 4 years old, with the nicest temperament in the world. She even did well with the cats at Casa UPP during introductions - and of course was wonderful with all the dogs.
Giselle had the best life with her little family. She ran with them. She vacationed with them. And she was there to watch her kids grow up. Of course she made the big cross-country move with them to North Carolina and became a southern belle with a blink of her lovely eyes.
When she died at home this week her mom made this lovely video compilation of her. Thank you Andrea and Jason. Giselle had her best life ever with you.
WELCOME BLITZ!
I'm BLITZ! I'm a Great Big Kid who loves to be loved. I'm actually pretty gentle for my age, size and breed. My approximate DOB is 8/29/2020 so I'm still an oversized juvenile delinquent. I currently weigh 63 lbs and I'm 27.25" at my withers. Fortunately my temperament is relatively calm and very, very sweet. I'm in a foster home with two older GSP boys who are very good to me and don't mind my being there at all. ♥
I play nicely with the old dogs as well as the young ones who will run around the yard with me. I'm a pretty spectacular guy - even though I'm not particularly fond of cats.
There's Only One Good Bed! And bossy, 13-year old matriarch, Tama, is prepared to be annoying until it's hers. Dear 10-year old Misty sighs and gives in to the old lady........ every time. Group dynamics. Gotta love it. 😉
I seem to remember from a decade (or so) ago that these soft, stuff-less toys were relatively indestructible. Not so much. 🧐
I assume I'm not the only one with a Round Tuit room. Some of you probably have a closet or a shelf. UPP has an entire room that we dedicate to tossing suff in so we can "Get Around To It". Yesterday was "Round Tuit" day - or at least a couple of hours.
And Look! I found a favorite toy from 10+ years ago that I'd completely forgotten! The dogs were totally delighted and of course Misty, as the major pack moderator, took control. Actually, she's probably the only one who remembered it. Best Toy Ever! If you roll it "just right" a treat will come out. Life Is Good❣️
"I Can See You!"
......... I have the pleasure of fostering a particularly lovely very dark liver GSP who desperately wants to chase deer. And they seem to be very active here just after dark. And he's certainly capable of jumping our 6-9 foot fence if I can't see him - which is almost all the time in the back of the yard where the automatic ring/security lights don't reach past the trees.
So.......... the lighted e-collar is my friend! I can follow his excursions, tell if he's standing on his hind legs and yell if I see him about to go awol. I'm sure he's not loving technology, 😉
Ever wonder what's going on inside your home when you arrive but before you get in the door? (wait for it..........)
