I rummaged around until I found Tate's turkey wings, tied one to a line and off we went! Even Misty forgot she was in mourning........πŸ˜‰

FAREWELL TATE

Our little man had his last day with us on February 3. It should have been a week earlier but I just wasn't ready to lose him. He was such a special part of our family.

Jamie brought him to us from the shelter on July 4, 2014 as a gorgeous, spirited, loving little guy who got along with everyone. I had him neutered the next day and he threw a blood clot that left him paralyzed and near death. He wouldn't eat at the vets and couldn't move. They were so good to us and I spent most of that first week at the clinic with him. He wasn't eating until I started making satin balls - an old recipe that had worked in the past. To the surprise at everyone at the clinic he ate! And he continued to eat. I carried him home and started with his rehabilitation.

David and Charles, who'd adopted from me previously and really wanted him for their boy, helped with his rehabilitation by walking him in their pool while he stayed at Casa UPP pretty much immobile until the next week when he dragged himself around our yard using his front legs while his back legs dragged behind him. Hubby & I were so grateful that he was able to move that much. Within another week he was using all 4 feet and I spent over $1000 on various styles of boots. He was so proud of his new attire.

We hired a physiotherapist (yes, there is such a thing as a dog physiotherapist) who came to our home and showed me what to do to facilitate his movement. Within a couple of months he was moving somewhat normally and I was able to let him outside whenever he wanted to explore. He was so happy with those boots! Before long he was able to go to daycare with the rest of the gang at Casa UPP.

Wrapping his feet was a daily ritual and he loved it. When I took dogs to a companion GSP Rescue in Canada he came with us and was a great little ambassador. He welcomed all the new dogs temporally staying with us for training. I loved this little man and he became ours along with Misty who had joined our family 2 years before.

All was well until the summer of 2025 when he started to lose the ability to use his hind legs. He still demanded his walks but his right front leg started to fail from his weight and having to compensate for his lagging back legs. He still wanted to go out and explore so I let him, knowing that this was the beginning of the end.

The end came quickly. The vet here was wonderful and got us in at 8 am before they opened to the public. I sat on the floor with him on my lap and was able to hold his right front leg and roll the vein for the vet to administer the euthanasia cocktail.

I still miss him. Misty misses her buddy. Even the cats miss him. It was such a privilege to have him in our home and help him when it was time for him to go.

This is my first encounter with degenerative myelopathy. My 15-year old, little man, Tate, has been affected in his left hind leg/foot for the last couple of months. His hind quarters were compromised in an accident in 2014 but he's been very active and enthusiastic until July 2025. Wraping doesn't work any longer. That left hind foot/leg drags behind him. I've tried orthopedic booties that I've adjusted to accommodate his foot/shin length. I've been wrapping his hind legs since 2014 so he's very used to that and could run for miles until recently.

We have non-skid rugs throughout the house. However, the hind-end weakness and left-hind foot knuckling is progressing. At his 45 lbs it's getting harder and harder for me to help him navigate stairs. I suggested to the hubby that we get an elevator and he glared at me. πŸ˜…

Any and all suggestions are very welcome. πŸ’ž

Update February 5. Our little man was not doing well Monday so Tuesday morning I took him to our vet who helped me release him from his pain. Thank you for your well wishes. 😞

Our lovely mature girl is loving all 16 of her years with her family on the east coast. She was even the ambassador for a local brewery in Baltimore. Of course some of her responsibilities required her supervision of the canning when she wasn't monitoring her little brother. If you're ever in the Baltimore area check out the CheckerSpot Brewing Company. You never know when a hairy UT celebrity will show up. πŸ₯°

Umber came to UPP as a 7-year old boy from Cedar City in 2016. He was such a lovely, gentle man who got along with everyone. He spent a few weeks with Lynne in Salt Lake before moving to WA to live with his forever family. Marylin drove him home to meet his new parents and his GSP sister, Megan.

Conner had the life we wish for all our pointers - lots of outdoor exercise, doting people and a canine companion. When Megan died in 2022 our little Noel joined the family as his new sister. Sadly Conner died in October 2024 at 15 years and is dearly missed by his family.

Soooooooo...... I'm probably the last dog person to get a washable rug. Four-time adopter, Leslie, told me to get one 3 years ago. I'm a little slow on the uptake. But ... with ancient pointer types that will eat anything anytime anywhere, it finally seemed like a good idea & I got one 2 weeks ago.

Just in time! Misty, the Perfect Pointer, ate "stuff" and within an hour deposited it on the washable rug. Good Girl! Of course the next dilemma was that we have a spindle washing machine that doesn't work with the washable rugs. So for the first time in over 40 years I shlepped the rug to the only laundromat in town. Fortunately there was someone there bright and early to show me how to use it.

And voila! 40 minutes later I was home and draped the rug over the bathtub to dry - they can't go in the dryer. And 2 days later it was back on the floor waiting for the next installment. πŸ™„

Dear Marty came to UPP via the West Jordan Animal Shelter on Aug 27, 2016 at about 7 years old. He was such a lovely, gentle boy who got along with everyone and everything. When Kayla and Caleb agreed to foster him with their current GSP girl, EllieMae it was a dream come true for the little man. The were close to each other in age and loved doing things with their people - inside and outside. Being "a guy", Marty worshiped Caleb. He watched his dad closely when he was making fishing lures and loved riding shotgun with him. They had travel adventures and even became west coasters.
I was fortunate to meet up with them when we moved to WA. By that time we all were older with the accompanying aches & pains. Marty had started losing feeling in his feet and was introduced to dog booties and Tate's wraps. EllieMae had pancreatitis and kidney disease. The last time I saw the little family together was when Tate and I made a quick trip south to meet them all with the remainder of Tama's fluid bags (lactated ringers) and kidney disease "stuff". We had a wonderful quick walk and stayed in close touch online.
It wasn't long before Marty died and was followed by EllieMae 6 months later. Thank you wonderful parents for all the care and love you gave both your dogs. I'll miss you and try and catch up with you in your new home in the spring.

Happy New Year! Let's see all those Perfect Pointers and their friends starting the Brand New Year ❣

We decided after 37 years and over 2000 dogs & cats that it would be nice to have a new love seat for the hubby & me to enjoy. And......... LOOK! A couple of the current residents had other ideas.

It was a beautiful April morning when I got a call from the ACO in Sevier County. He'd found a lovely little man that he assumed went awol during a hunting expedition. No one claimed him so the ACO called me to come and get him. It was love at first sight - well, actually he made me laugh at first sight. This small-ish, muscular little man had the biggest smile in the world (and the longest tongue). Kirk spent most of his UPP days at Casa UPP except when I was on overnight transports. He loved everyone, including the cats. He also thought it was his responsibility to train all the puppies that came into the rescue or were born with us.

When Banjo's family was considering another dog in 2020 I was so grateful when they wanted Kirk. He deserved to be in their home as their dog. The stars were in favor of the move and we had a beautiful supermoon to light our way as we drove north to meet them.

Kirk was home for almost 5 years. Definitely the best days of his life.

Dear Aiko! (pronounced I-Ko) This funny little man with all kinds of interesting conditions came to us in February 2021. He wasn't eating, had diarrhea, possibly some blood in his urine, and was lethargic. His gait was stiff and disjointed. And of course he had chronic phlegm dripping out of his nostrils and a nasty skin condition to add to his repertoire. His bloodwork/urinalysis were unremarkable.

A month on doxy and enrofloaxacin did nothing for the nasal discharge. He was reactive to light so I draped a sheet over his kennel during the day. Within a week he was eating well but none of the other symptoms were resolving.

We put him on apoquel for the itching and that seemed to help but didn't cure the problem - just made it bearable. Also cephalexin in case of infection.

I tried oatmeal/coconut oil baths - he wanted to eat the mixture. It took me longer to clean g**k out of the tub than to bathe the dog. I moved to medicated shampoo/conditioner that helped. I had to sit in the tub with him for 10 minutes while it penetrated his skin. He enjoyed being foamed and rinsed. This continued every 3 days or so.

His gait still was stiff 2 months later. It seems to affect all four quarters. Our vet thought it might be his prostate. And..... if he didn't have enough physical problems he was entertained with a laser pointer as a pup so he spent a lot of time obsessively focusing on shadows and light movements. I'd only had two other dogs in 15 years with idiot owners who did this and he wasn't as bad as the previous two, but it meant he never really relaxed because he never knew where/when a light was going to come from.

In the meantime this little man was so grateful for everything we did for him. He smiled. He loved to lie outside on the cots and soak up the sun. He was delighted when he could pick up a ball in his mouth. He was good with the entire herd at Casa UPP, including the cats who ignored him.

Eventually his maladies dwindled and most departed. And the summer brought an inquiry from one of our wonderful adopters in ID. With the help of fix-it dude, Kenny, and Aiko's new dad, Jeff, he was home for supper on Aug 25. And he got a new name...... Spencer!

Spencer had the best 3 years ever! He lived beside a lake. He went on walks with his mom and dad. He was an indoor boy with plenty of windows to keep him occupied. And he had his family hold him while he died. It doesn't get any better.

Thank you Davis Co for sending him to us, our vet, Kay, and Kenny & Shawna who helped with daily essentials. And thank you amazing parents who fulfilled all of his dreams and needs.
