MedVet is proud to offer comprehensive care through our network of emergency and specialty care hospitals, and our patient Gabriel is a testament to how expert, collaborative care can make all the difference.

Gabriel, an 8-month-old Border Collie, came to MedVet after a rough start to his life. He was very lucky to have found his forever home with a loving family who chose not to give up! After developing seizures on top of his other issues, Gabriel came to our Salt Lake City ER to see Dr. Whitney White. Before long, he had an entire team of specialists dedicated to making forever a little longer, and returning a happy, loving puppy to his family.

With findings from a brain MRI, Gabriel had a surgical trephination procedure (a hole cut into his frontal sinus) with surgeon, Dr. Margie Owen, which was accompanied by a drain placed for chronic abscessation of the frontal sinus.

His care didn't stop there! Unfortunately, Gabriel had several other ailments that needed specialized attention. He was diagnosed and treated for bacterial meningitis. He had ruptured globes and needed a bilateral enucleation (removal of both eyes). Gabriel also needed a frontal sinus surgical exploration, and of course, all of the care and treatment associated with such major procedures.

Special thanks to the team of experts and their caregivers who so compassionately treated Gabriel: Dr. Whitney White (ER); Dr. Rennie Putam (ER); Dr. Ali Weaver (ER); Dr. Michael Sahagian (Critical Care); Dr. Margie Owen (Surgery); Dr. Christina Boekhout (Surgery); Dr. Hilary Wright (Neurology); Dr. Jaycie Riesberg (Ophthalmology); and Dr. Max Parkanzky (Internal Medicine).

Pictured: thank you card from Gabriel's pet family, expressing their gratitude for MedVet's care.

Arthritis can cause discomfort, pain, and reduced mobility in pets, impacting their overall quality of life. Signs of arthritis in pets are similar to what we experience as humans and can include posture changes, difficulty walking, and reluctance to play.

Dr. Danny Sack from MedVet Columbus gives us a few tips for pet owners managing arthritis in their pet, and when to see a veterinarian for further help.

Some steps you can take to help your pet with osteoarthritis:

#1 – Maintain a lean body weight
#2 – Consistent low-level activity
#3 – Joint supplements
#4 – Management of pain with medications
#5 – Consider maintenance rehabilitation therapy
#6 – Keep up with veterinary appointments

Today, on Melanoma Monday, we join the efforts to raise awareness about the signs of this dangerous cancer in pets.

Malignant melanomas often manifest in areas like the lips, mouth, eyes, or nail beds, but with early detection and treatment, there is a high chance of successful outcomes.

If you notice any signs of melanoma in your pet, reach out to your veterinarian for guidance and consider requesting a referral to a Veterinary Oncologist.

MedVet Oncology treats several types of cancers, including melanoma. For a list of MedVet Oncology locations, visit:

Meet Flower, a brave female rabbit who was diagnosed with a chest tumor that caused breathing difficulties and bulging eyes due to increased chest pressure. Fortunately, at MedVet Salt Lake City, we offer radiation therapy as a treatment option for this type of tumor. Just one week after Flower's first radiation treatment, her breathing improved significantly, and her eyes were no longer bulging thanks to a significant decrease in tumor size.

Flower's treatment was a collaborative effort with her primary exotics' veterinarian, Dr. Boehler, who provided anesthesia support at MedVet. Megan Smith, our skilled radiation anesthesia technician, closely monitored Flower's anesthesia, while Rita Medina-Deihl, our dedicated radiation therapist, delivered precise radiation therapy during each session. Overseeing Flower's treatment and radiation planning was Dr. Erin Trageser, our experienced radiation oncologist. We are proud to have played a role in Flower's journey to recovery, and we are grateful for the expertise and dedication of our incredible team. At MedVet Salt Lake City, we are committed to providing exceptional care for all our furry patients, no matter how big or small.

Many of us will be heading outdoors during the warm months ahead, which means a higher chance of tick exposure for us, and our pets. Ticks can carry diseases, like Lyme disease, that pose serious health risks. Be wary of overgrown bushes, dense vegetation, and excessive yard debris, as these are prime hideouts for ticks.

Lily toxicity is more common in warmer months, particularly for cats. Some types of lilies will cause local irritation to the mouth while others can cause kidney failure.

If your cat has eaten a lily, take them and the plant to your veterinarian, or a pet ER like MedVet, to help determine the best course of action and start immediate treatment if needed.
