In his new exhibition in the UMFA’s salt series, Salt Lake City-based Horacio Rodriguez considers the ancient ceramics in the Museum’s Mesoamerican collection as he investigates the immigration of people and things—past and present—across the U.S.-Mexico border.

Congratulations to Derrek Hanson, new Executive Director of Red Butte Garden

Congratulations Derrek Hanson!

December 14, 2021—Derrek Hanson will become the fifth executive director of Red Butte Garden at the University of Utah, effective December 16, 2021. Hanson has been the garden’s interim executive director for the past seven months, following the resignation of Jimmy Turner earlier this year.

“Derrek has more than 20 years of experience at Red Butte Garden, giving him a keen understanding of what the garden means to the university and the community. He has proven to be an effective leader and administrator while leading the organization in various capacities over the years,” said Laura Snow, University of Utah chief of staff.

Utah Museum of Fine Arts Holiday Market | December 4 & 5, 9 am - 5 pm
410 Campus Center Drive, SLC

Find handmade creations in glass, ceramics, paintings, jewelry, photography, artisan chocolates, and so much more at this annual event. Free to attend, but a reservation is required.

Red Butte Garden Holiday Market | December 4 & 5, 10 am - 5 pm
Red Butte Garden Orangerie, 300 Wakara Way, SLC

The market features local artists who will bring an array of handmade gifts for sale including jewelry, glass art, pottery, fiber art, wearable art, natural soaps and lotions, and more. Free garden admission this weekend thanks to Salt Lake County Zoo, Arts & Parks! No tickets are required for the garden and market visit.

Congratulations, Dahlia!
Looking forward to more baby photos from Utah's Hogle Zoo.

Dahlia, our colobus monkey became a mom for the first time! The baby, whose gender is yet to be identified and name is pending, is doing great. She’s already being carried around by other female members of the group, even by the youngest members, Pepper and Lulu. This is called alloparenting and is considered normal behavior for colobus monkeys. It's a great way for younger females to learn how to properly take care of babies before having their own one day!

Alloparenting has definitely helped Dahlia prepare for motherhood, as she has played a big part in raising her siblings. It certainly takes a village, or a troop to raise a baby. Come visit our family of colobus monkeys, and meet our youngest member at Primate Forest!

We love going to Bootanical - it's the perfect place to wear our flower costumes with the kiddos! Bootanical runs through the end of the month at Red Butte Garden.
