Wasatch Hunting Retriever Club

Wasatch Hunting Retriever Club The WHRC is a nonprofit AKC club composed of volunteers interested in training and testing retrievers for waterfowl hunting.

If you are interested in hunting with a well trained retriever, we can help. Our non-profit club is made up of both professional and amateur trainers who hunt their dogs and enjoy training and competing their dogs in American Kennel Club (AKC) hunt tests. We sponsor dog training seminars, conduct both informal and AKC licensed Hunt Tests and provide opportunities to keep you and your hunting dog a

ctive throughout the year. If you would like to join our club, simply show up at one of our events, fill out the application, and pay the annual dues. Our field events are held at the Lee Kay Dog Training Grounds Center at about 2100 South 6000 West, Salt Lake City.

Thank you everyone who came out to our training picnic today. Good people and great dogs make for a fantastic day. No matter what the weather does. And how everybody pitched in and helped made it that much better. Smiles galore! Our next picnic is March 1st, and Lacey will be cooking for us again. As if that isn't enough reason on its own to come out. Keep training and hope to see you in a few weeks.

PS Our basic AKC handlers and judge's seminar is next weekend. If you are interested get signed up on Entry Express.

As a reminder, we will also be offering an “Introduction to AKC Hunt Tests” at 9 AM for those interested in getting started in the sport, as well as a puppy stake at 10 AM using pigeons to introduce pups to live birds.

We look forward to seeing you there!

Hello WHRC Members and Friends,

I hope you have all had wonderful hunting seasons, enjoyable holidays, and that your 2025 is off to a great start. With January coming to a close, our club is looking forward to our event season kicking off. We have a couple events happening very soon with our first picnic test (club training day) and our Judges Seminar.

WHRC Picnic Test #1
Date: February 8, 2025
Start Time: 8:00 AM
Location: Lee Kay Dog Training Grounds (west of 6000 W 2100 S, Salt Lake City, UT)
Cost:
$ 30.00 Live Flyer - Member Rate
$ 35.00 Live Flyer - Non-Member Rate
$ 10.00 Puppy Pigeon
$ 25.00 2025 Membership Dues
*** Please note: While we do have the ability to accept credit cards, we kindly ask you to come prepared to pay with cash or check (if possible) to ensure that all funds go directly toward the club and its ability to continue hosting events. Credit card fees are not insignificant. We do not utilize Venmo, PayPal, or CashApp at this time.

Our first picnic test will be held on Saturday, February 8th. Signups will begin at 8:00 AM with slots being first come, first served. The test setup will be able to be scaled for all competition levels - Junior, Senior, and Master. For those who are just beginning in the sport and want to learn more about getting started, we will be offering an Introduction to AKC Hunt Tests at this event, led by our club President, Lee Whittaker. We will also be offering a stake for puppies utilizing pigeons - this event will be led by club Vice President, KC Owens. We will also be accepting applications for 2025 club membership at this event. We will have membership forms available at the event, however, it will greatly help us speed up the signup process if you bring your membership application (please see attached) already printed out and signed. Our schedule of events will be as follows:

8:00 AM - Sign-ups begin
8:30 AM - Planned start for Junior/Senior/Master setup - this may be impacted by weather, how much help we have, etc
9:00 AM - Introduction to AKC Hunt Tests led by Lee Whittaker
10:00 AM - Puppy Stake led by KC Owens

Lunch will be available sometime close to noon and will be prepared by our generous club member, Lacie Harley. There is no charge for lunch, but donations are greatly appreciated. The planned menu is chili, hotdogs, and cornbread. Lacie makes a mean chili - you don't want to miss it!

As always, we ask all participants to take a turn helping working throwing birds, at the line, etc. These events are only possible when everyone pitches in to help and that help is appreciated! Please plan to stay for the duration of the event - we cannot guarantee a run time or how much time it will take each dog to run the setup. Because this is a training exercise, the club is committed to helping each member and dog as appropriate. Our goal is to build amazing handler/dog teams! Please also remember to dress warm and in layers as the weather can be unpredictable this time of year. It is also advisable to have appropriate footwear for muddy, wet, and/or snowy conditions.

AKC Basic Judges & Handler's Seminar
Date: February 15, 2025
Start Time: 8:00 AM
End Time: Approximately 3:00 PM

Our club will once again be hosting an AKC Basic Judges and Handlers Seminar on February 15th. This seminar is required for anyone aspiring to become a judge for AKC Hunt Tests and is a fabulous opportunity for handlers to come and learn the ins and outs of how hunt tests are judged at each level, the scoring system, a deeper dive into the rule book, basics of setting up a good test, and much, much more. Whether you wish to be a judge or just want to take your skills as a handler to the next level, we encourage you to come join us as we learn from one of our AKC representatives. Please bring a notebook, pens, and pencils. The AKC will provide workbooks and any associated handouts.

You can sign up for the seminar on Entry Express at https://www.entryexpress.net/loggedIn/viewevent.aspx?eid=14720 . Entries for this event close on February 10, 2025.

Please note that if you select the Seminar Only option, you'll need to bring your own lunch. Our lunch break will be about 30 minutes, so there won't be time to leave the facilities. If you select the Seminar + Lunch option, the club will provide you with a boxed lunch.

Thank you all for your support and participation in our events. On behalf of the WHRC officers and board, we look forward to seeing you very soon and wish you a very fun and successful season.

I want to thank the normal club members who came out for our duck pen project this morning. Well Done guys and gals. And also to say how thoroughly disgusted I am with the other members and clubs who do nothing but expect things to get done. Once the few give up, the game will be over.

For my friends in the retriever and hunting communities…

Many of you remember Sterling Lyman as he started Triumph, the organization for boys that we frequently recruit help from for our events at the Wasatch Hunting Retriever Club and the Weber Retriever Club.

As many know, Sterling has faced some unimaginable health challenges these past several years. For those of you in the Weber/North Davis county areas, consider getting your vehicle cleaned up before waterfowl season starts in earnest while also helping a member of our community and his family.

We took the show on the road today. Youth Waterfowl festival is always fun. Members stepped it up. Thanks.
