Dear All; The Bachauer Competition is starting June 16th in Salt Lake City. We still need a couple of host homes to provide a room and a good piano for competitors to practice on from June 16-30. I have been doing this for over 20 years and I love it. You get to have a world-class pianist in your home, hear wonderful music, and be a cheerleader for your guest. If you have a spare room, a decent piano, the ability to provide food, occasional transportation, and emotional support for a competitor; we would love to talk to you!

The Gina Bachauer International Piano Foundation is a non-profit organization that provides music opportunities for children and adults. Learn more about the foundation and its many programs, including competitions, festivals, and concerts.

It’s officially spring!! As spring fever comes around, parrot owners are faced with the challenge of a hormonal bird. These hormones can lead to some undesirable behaviors such as aggression, regurgitation, feather picking, flat backing, nesting and more. Your parrot can not control these changes but you can help them by not encouraging sexual behavior (only petting them on their head), making sure they have adequate dark/quiet time, and keeping them on a good healthy balanced diet. If your bird becomes very aggressive, it’s ok to keep them in their cage when other people are around that they may attack. Above all else be patient with your parrot during this time. This too will pass.

“Greetings, We recently lost our beloved African Grey Echo when she flew out our back door on the 4th. It was pitch dark out and although we have not stopped searching and have launched an extensive social media and flyer campain we have never seen her again. I have a group of people helping us with contacting all the local orgs that might get a phone call if one is found but I am not sure if anyone has contacted your group. Thought I had better reach out in case not. We have had Echo for 12 years, she is the focus of our lives and we are lost and broken without her. Please help us find her by asking questions if anyone calls regarding the care or needs of an African. Or obviously if anyone calls having found one, We can be reached day or night at 801-759-8639 Thank you, Jackie Olson”

Did you know what you feed your parrot can affect not only their health but their temperament? Captive parrots are not nearly as active as there wild friends. Seeds are very high in energy and should not be be a primary source of food for a pet bird. A low energy diet of high quality nutritional pellets combined with plenty of veggies and a minimal amount of fruit should be your parrots daily meal. Seeds should be used as a treat or as a training tool.

Some foods should never be given to a parrot and can lead to sickness or death. Some of these include:
Alcohol, Avacado, tapioca, dairy products, meat, chocolate, peanuts, and fruit seeds and pits.

WAES is celebrating!!

Last year we had close to thirty birds in rescue. Right now we are down to about eight birds in rescue, the lowest number since probably 1997. Thank you to all those who have supported WAES through fostering, adoption, donations, and membership!

If you are wanting to become a member go to our website and fill out the form! It is only $30 a year to become a member. You will get a monthly newsletter, get invited to monthly meetings (once Covid ends) and have opportunities to help foster or adopt our birds.

If you would like to make a donation to our organization, you can do so by clicking on the donate button on our website. We use the money to help pay for veterinarian bills and basic needs for our birds.
