We had fun, snowy hikes today! We’re working on getting at least a few pictures posted every day. Sorry for the lack of pictures- the tiny human has our evenings (and mornings and afternoons) super busy!

Two weeks ago we lost a very special dog, Finnegan. Finn was one of our first two client dogs 12 years ago and he hiked with us 3-5 times a week for 12 years. He was like our very own dog and we couldn’t possibly have loved him more. His human mom and dad are good friends of ours from even before we started DRD and when his dad, Steve, passed away 5 1/2 years ago, it made Finn and his sister Iris even more special to us.

Finn was one of a kind! He was the sweetest and snuggliest squish face to the people he loved, but he could be the biggest jerk to other dogs sometimes. 😆 I could probably recall dozens of times where I had to yell his full name while I tried to wrangle him and his leash, just to keep him from scrapping with another dog. When we were on our “secret” trails and could almost guarantee that we wouldn’t see another human or dog, Finn was in his element, exploring everything and finding the best rocks he could so he could flip them with his nose to get the perfect angle to pick up the rock (no matter how big!) and carry it. Finn loved to lay in whatever creek or spring we would find and in my mine’s eye I can see him blissfully laying in the cool water with the sun shining on his handsome face.

One time years ago I was running with Finn, his sister Iris and my two girls. It was soooo snowy and absolutely nobody was out but us. It was getting late in the day and as we rounded a corner in the trail I was stunned to see literally 8-9 coyotes spread on either side of the trail maybe 1/8 mile in front of us. I halted and was deciding what to do. The coyotes were yipping to each other, but didn’t seem concerned with us. They almost seemed to be looking for food under the snow. I had just decided that we would continue running, because I figured the coyotes would move when they saw us coming and wouldn’t bother a human and four dogs. Just as I had made that decision and started to run forward, Finn had clearly also assessed the situation and made a different decision because he bolted in the opposite direction. I thought “well, if Finn is concerned then I should be too!” and I quickly followed him. 😂

Another time we rounded a corner on a fall day and came almost nose to nose with a moose. Before I could react Finn ran at the moose and chased him off the trail and down the mountain in the trees, with me screaming his name the whole time. He had no fear!!

I saw my first Mountain Lion on a hike with Finn and I’m certain he would have protected me with his life if he’d had to. He was so amazing and clearly loved his people.

I have certainly hiked or run thousands of miles with Finn over the past 12 years and we had so many fun adventures. I am so thankful for every second I was blessed to be with him and I’m SO thankful that he got to meet and spend time with Indie. I will never, ever forget my sweet Finntimidator/Finnuccio/Finnstigator. I love you forever and ever, Finnegan. ❤️
