It’s snowing in the South and East seems like everywhere. Let’s be careful with our LBDs. A few tips ….but common sense seems reasonable when we don’t get lots of snow :::

When a dog's paws are in snow, they are exposed to potential dangers like cold temperatures, ice buildup between the toes, irritation from de-icing chemicals, and potential for frostbite, so it's important to take precautions to protect them by trimming excess hair between the toes, applying a paw balm or wax, and considering dog booties for added protection, especially if the snow is heavy or the temperatures are very low.
Key points about dog paws in snow:
Dryness and cracking: Cold weather can dry out a dog's paw pads, leading to cracks and discomfort.
Ice ball formation: Snow can clump between the toes and freeze, causing pain when walking.
Chemical irritation: De-icing salts on sidewalks can burn a dog's paws if they lick them.
Frostbite risk: In extreme cold, a dog's paws can suffer frostbite if not properly protected.
How to protect your dog's paws in snow:
Trim the fur:
Regularly trim the hair between your dog's toes to prevent snow from accumulating.
Apply paw balm:
Use a pet-safe paw balm or wax to create a protective barrier on the paw pads.
Consider dog booties:
For extra protection, especially in deep snow or icy conditions, put dog booties on your dog.
Rinse paws after walks:
After being outside in the snow, wash your dog's paws with warm water to remove any snow, salt, or ice.
Monitor for signs of discomfort:
Watch for signs like licking paws excessively, limping, or reluctance to walk, which could indicate paw irritation.
