One of our most FAQs: is it legal to shoot a spotted fawn in Alabama? Color and/or pattern of the deer's fur is not mentioned anywhere in current Alabama hunting regulations. There is no restriction on harvesting piebald, albino, spotted, tiger-striped, or melanistic deer. Your very own personal choice about what age deer you want to harvest comes into play here. If you choose to harvest a deer that's less than a year old, it may still have spots.

This photo was taken in November. A couple more cold snaps and winter coat growth...and within weeks this very same deer might go from being a "spotted fawn" to not being one. It'll be the same deer, and the same age, regardless of its coat color. We have pics of last year's young still sporting spots the following MARCH. The timeline of shedding out the old spotted coat and growing in new unspotted fur varies depending on the weather, nutrition, and age. This means you can have a quite large "fawn" still holding on to spots. If that's the age and size deer you want to use your tag on, no rule about fur color is stopping you.

Spots should not be the only thing that tell you that a deer is young; body and head shape differentiate fawns from yearlings and adults. And while we're on the topic, a fawn is NOT a yearling. A yearling is an animal in its second year (so it's one year old). A fawn is existing in its very first fall/winter. A yearling was around for the last one too.
