Meet Brianna! 🩷🐾🩺💙

"I grew up in a small town called Blanket (TX) with my parents Debbie and Clayton and my big sister Nikki. My family had both small and large animals, which consisted of cats, dogs, and horses. Growing up I helped my dad raise show pigs, cared for baby kittens, saved baby raccoons, and much more. All of these experiences led me to pursue my career in veterinary medicine. I attended ASU for college and graduated in 2021 with my Bachelor's in Animal Science. After that, I joined the Southside family and have enjoyed working with them ever since. I hope to become a LVT someday and continue caring for animals. Other things I enjoy doing are spending time with family, hunting, and traveling new places."

Four months ago, a stray dog outside of his apartment attacked Vanchanzo. His owners rushed him to Southside where Dr. Flanagan started life saving measures, leading to the beginning of a long road to recovery. Van presented to the clinic with a large 7-8cm laceration and multiple deep punctures to his neck, hypothermia, shock and neurologic dysfunction. He was minimally responsive and unable to stand or move his neck; it was hard to determine if this was due to shock or functional damage. Vanchanzo was hospitalized with an initial plan to perform surgery if we were able to stabilize. On day 2, he did start to show small signs of improvement but his prognosis was still guarded due to the possibility of neurologic damage. Thankfully, radiographs of the neck did not show any evidence of bony damage or disc displacement. On day 3 his care was taken over by Dr. White. His front legs didn’t show any signs of pain or withdrawal responses, he was still unable to sit up or move his head and although Van still had a guarded prognosis, he once again continued to show mild signs of improvement. He was such a fighter! By day 4 Van was stable enough to discharge! His family decided to take him home but continue his care on an outpatient basis. He returned to the clinic every 2-3 days for extensive wound care and a fresh bandage. By early February Van was trying to sit up and by end of March this brave boy was back to enjoying his life and running unassisted! We are so happy to report that because of his family’s diligence and the clinic’s dedication, Vanchanzo has made a full recovery!

Did you know that less than 10% of the pets that are unchipped will return home each year?

A microchip is a secure, reliable, permanent identification for your pet and the process is simple and affordable. Microchipping your pet can help ensure that if your pet goes missing, they can be identified and find their way back to you.

If your pet is chipped, make sure their information is up to date. To help keep pets close to their loved ones, share this post and remind your friends to !

Is your pet scooting or licking their rear? It could be their a**l glands.

A**l glands are located on the rear of dogs and cats. The glands produce an oily, fishy-smelling fluid that helps with scent marking. Sometimes these glands can get impacted or infected.

Soft, consistent stool, as well as allergies, are common causes of irritation. If your pet is scooting, licking excessively, or showing signs of discomfort around their rear end, contact us! We will help to identify the cause and determine the best course of treatment.

Meet Lynsi!

"I have worked at Southside since 2017 as a CSR. I moved to San Angelo in 2010 from my hometown of Alpine, Texas. I am Mom to two little girls and a spoiled dog named Lexi. I have always had a caretaker's heart and made the transition from human medicine to animals when I came to Southside. Working here has filled my life with more purpose and has instilled a deep passion for not only animals but also for the Vet Med community. Clients and their pets become an extension of family at the clinic and that has quickly become my favorite perk!"

With tomorrow being Hairball Awareness Day, we wanted to remind our cat parents about the importance of preventing hairballs.

Accumulated from excessive grooming, hairballs can build in your cat’s digestive system and either get coughed up or in some cases, need surgical removal.
If your cat is excessively vomiting, lethargic, loses their appetite, or has diarrhea or constipation, these may be signs of a blockage and you should contact our team immediately.
