And we’re back! It’s been a busy few weeks of traveling, training, and overall just enjoying time with the pups!

Milo, Bella, & Chuck all went home recently after graduating their board and train programs! We got to go to Dallas for Milo’s send home lesson, and Austin for Chuck’s. Even though these pups aren’t local to us, we’ll still be meeting up with them and their owners regularly to continue their training.

All of these sweet pups came to us with varying behavioral issues, but now they have the coping skills and their owners have the training necessary to help all of them continue to navigate life with new found confidence and freedom!

Sweet Soleil went home today!❤️

Sol has lived with me for the past 1.5 years, he came in as a little 4 month old puppy and oh man was he WILD. Sol came from a pretty horrible situation prior to his family getting him, so we had a lot of things to work though. Sol’s family wanted the best for him once they realized that they weren’t in a place to raise a puppy with his issues, so they opted to allow me to raise him from puppyhood to adulthood so that they could have a fully trained dog that they could enjoy life with. Throughout his process they have been able to come out to the ranch to visit him and work with him, and we finally felt that it was time for him to go home. It feels a bit empty here without him, but I’m beyond happy that he finally gets to be home with his people ❤️

Sweet sweet Bruno wrapped up his Behavioral Modification Board and Train today!❤️

When Bruno first came in for training, he would try anything and everything to go after another dog. He would even go to the extent of hurting himself or redirecting onto his handler when reacting towards other dogs.

His progression has been slow, but he has made HUGE progress in his time here. From going absolutely ballistic around other dogs, to being able to be neutral around dogs in various scenarios. He and his owner now have the coping skills and tools to help him work through his issues, and with continued follow up training we’ll be seeing these two often to ensure that they are set up for success!

Just some of our pups from today’s social group enjoying the warm weather! ☀️

It’s always nice having a good group of dogs to run a social group with! Matching temperament and play styles is important, I don’t believe in letting dogs be completely unhinged whenever they’re out together in groups. Things still have to be structured and monitored, the pups still need to be mindful of their manners and obedience, and not be overbearing to other dogs. Most of these pups are still adolescents, so it’s important to have a mix of balanced, older dogs in the group to help keep everyone in line along with our team watching over and supervising the group!

From left to right we have- Rhea, Ginger, Alex, Maxi, Levi, Darwin, Taya, and Adira!

This sweet girl stole all our hearts here, watching her come out of her shell and learn to love training was huge for all of us to witness. We’ll miss this goody sweet girl, but we’re excited for her next chapter with her family!❤️

Diabetic Alert Dog in Training, Taya, and Mobility Assistance Dog in Training, Darwin, both did awesome at dinner last night! They were surrounded by a ton of kids running around and overall a very busy restaurant atmosphere.

Service dogs need to be well rounded in all aspects of training- whether that’s obedience training, task work, or public access skills!

How cute are these two pups?😍

Piper & Riddick are siblings that both started their Puppy Jump Start Lessons this week! These two little pups have some awesome owners that already have started a ton of training with these pups, so now we’re working on furthering their existing training and working towards some big goals!

Piper and Riddick both will have huge roles to fill as service dogs (Piper the doodle will be a Psychiatric SD & Riddick will be a Mobility Assistance SD) so we’re making sure these two kiddos are starting off their training on the right foot!

My sweet little foster pup, Odie, went to his forever home today❤️ Odie has been with me since he was just a few months old, so to see him go to the most perfect family for him was the best feeling in the world!

I couldn’t have imagined a more perfect home for Odie than going to live with Megan, Cory, and their kids! He also gets to live with his new “big” brother, Beau (another ACW training pup).

This family has become some of my closest clients over the last year, so I’m ecstatic that Odie is going to still be a part of my life and that his family understands the importance of continued training to help set Odie up for success. They’re going give him the best life and I couldn’t be happier!❤️

I just have to brag on our Urban Group Class clients for a minute here! All of these dogs started out their training with various struggles and issues, but their owners have all continued to be dedicated and consistent with their training and it truly shows! Can you believe that in this group there’s 4 service dogs/service dogs in training, 2 therapy dogs, and a handful of dogs that were previously so dog reactive/aggressive that they couldn’t handle seeing a dog from a few blocks away without reacting all hanging out together? Way to go guys, you make me so proud to be your trainer!❤️

Your send home lesson after your pup’s board and train is one of the most important parts of your dog’s training. This is when you learn about everything your dog has been learning over the course of their stay, and how to apply your dog’s new training at home!

Yesterday was a special send home day! Miss Leia wrapped up her behavioral modification program after being with us for a few months, and was finally reunited with her mom. Leia is by far one of the most fearful dogs I’ve worked with, every little thing was enough to totally send her in a downwards spiral and make her shut down. She lacked so much confidence in her self, and was convinced the world was out to get her.
It’s been an absolute joy getting to work with her and see her blossom into a happy and confident pup! Aylin is a testament to the extent that a dedicated owner will go through for their dog. Not once did she ever think about giving up on Leia or calling it quits. The patience and love she has for this dog is so evident, and I’m so thankful I got to meet these two and be a part of their lives. Now they get to move onto their next chapter of their lives in Massachusetts together, and I’m beyond excited to see what the future has in store for them!

GSD puppies, Felix & Finn, had their first day of their Day Train Program today! These sweet boys were dumped behind their foster mom’s home a few months ago, and she decided to take them in, vet them, and get them trained up. Their foster mom wants them to have all the necessary skills to help them thrive in their new homes whenever they get adopted. We’re going to be working on addressing some separation anxiety issues due to Littermate Syndrome, along with confidence building and obedience training!

Both of these pups are incredibly intelligent kiddos with amazing owners that are dedicated to their success! We’ll still be seeing them in their follow up sessions to ensure that they continue to be successful in all their life endeavors with their families, but we will definitely miss having them at the house with us!

Sweet Max finally went home today!! This guy blew his owners away with his behavior today, and I couldn’t be prouder of how well he did ❤️

Every dog is different, Max is such a relationship based dog with very little motivation for rewards in training. Everything with Max has been building a relationship and showing him that his handler is relevant to him. In typical Husky manner, Max very much had a “what’s in it for me?” attitude prior to training. Now he understands that through a meaningful relationship with his humans, he can do all the fun things! Way to go, sweet boy!

Happy gotcha day to my best friend and my heart dog❤️

Five years ago, I was on the search for a service dog candidate to assist me with my day to day life when I started having seizures after a car accident that became so frequent and so debilitating, they made me drop out of school. I was lost and unsure of what to do with my life, and then I met Rhea. She’s the dog that started it all for me and she completely changed the course of my life. I saw how big of an impact she made in my life, and I knew that I could find joy in helping others and making a career out of working with dogs and their owners.

From being my only company during hospital stays, to traveling across the US together for trips and everything in between, this girl has been through it all with me in the last 5 years. Rhea continues to be such an instrumental part of my life, not just personally but in my career as well. Rhea has helped me rehabilitate hundreds of dogs, she has a knack for getting pretty much every and any dog to like her. I couldn’t do what I do today if it wasn’t for her and all the lessons she has taught me!

People always tell me that when they think of who “my dog” is out of my pack, it’s Rhea. Our journey together hasn’t always been easy, but I couldn’t imagine life without her at this point. Thank you for picking me to be your person sweet girl❤️

It’s summer time!☀️ As things are heating up and school and work are winding down a bit, everyone is beginning to get ready for summer break!
We’re going to be starting a mini series on places you can visit with your dog, how to navigate these new environments, and some tips and tricks for you guys.

So, let us start with our first destination- the beach!☀️🌊🏖

☀️ Make sure for your beach trip with your pup, you pack the essentials! Plenty of drinking water is a must, along with all your training essentials (long leashes are great if your dog doesn’t have a reliable recall yet and you want them to explore) and shade for your dog to avoid harmful UV rays and reduce the risk of heat exhaustion or heat stroke.

☀️ Some common things to look out for while at the beach with your pup are:
* Be mindful of your dog trying to eat any garbage or even too much sand, these can increase your risk of harmful obstructions.
* Keep an eye on your pup in the heat, make sure the sand isn’t too warm (dog booties like what Mango is wearing is a great way to ensure your pup doesn’t burn their feet) and learn the signs of heat exhaustion/heat stroke.
* Don’t allow your pup to drink too much ocean water, this can actually be very harmful for them! Instead, make sure you allow them consistent access to safe drinking water!
* If your dog is not a strong swimmer and you plan on getting in the water, pack a life vest for them!

☀️ at the end of the day, the most important thing is to be safe, and enjoy your time with your pup!

Happy 4th birthday to my little firecracker, Kaia! This little girl hasn’t been a part of the family for very long, but she was absolutely meant to end up here. Everyone that meets Kaia knows she’s a spicy little thing and she’s a go go go type of gal, and those are some of the many things I love about her!

She gives her all in everything she does and she’s such an incredibly versatile dog. From nights out with friend and traveling to new places together, to being my first dog to compete in mondio ring and PSA with, and most importantly the best companion a girl could ask for!

Happy Birthday ya little psycho hyena, here’s to many more years together❤️

About Katarina & A Canine’s Way

I’m Katarina Morales, the owner and head trainer of A Canine’s Way Dog Training. Throughout my whole life, I’ve always been involved with animals. From a young age, I worked with my family in numerous rescue groups, specifically rescues specializing in adopting out retired racing greyhounds. From there, I volunteered at the San Antonio Zoo and a local private primate sanctuary, and specialized in animal enrichment and conservation for numerous years. I then began my undergraduate career at UTSA with a major in Biology to hopefully pursue a veterinary degree after I was finished with my under graduate career.

The world however, had other plans for me. My first year of university I was involved in a car accident that left me with permanent neurological damage, the effect of that was that I developed a seizure disorder. I had to withdraw from university, and begin to figure out what I would do with my life. After doing some research I discovered medical response service dogs and learned that a service dog could help me live my life normally again. I then found and adopted Rhea, and my dog training journey began.
