A dog is never too old to learn proper leash etiquette and it makes outtings more enjoyable for everyone involved. As with any kind of training, consistency is key! As silly as it may sound, the most important preparation before walking our dogs is making sure we are in the right headspace. Our dogs can read us like a book, so it is critical to always remain calm and assertive. When a dog is in training I would never recommend using a retractable leash, it doesn't allow you the level of control necessary. Whenever your dog is exhibiting poor behavior such as pulling towards another dog, lingering in one spot or barking we need to snap them out of this behavior and re-center them on us. We can do this by using sound or touch. A quick poke in an unexpected area can do the trick. Lastly, it is important to reward good behavior. Positive reinforcement is always going to be more effective than yelling at our dog when they do something we don't appreciate. Show me a picture of your furry friend out and about!

Happy Tuesday! I wanted to make some introductions in order to better allow everyone to understand who Happy Tails is and what we are about. My name is Carissa, I am the owner and creator of Happy Tails! I've spent a large amount of my life caring for animals and nannying as well. Being able to bring others joy is what fulfills me. That handsome man on the left is my baby of nine years, Rooney. We moved to Salt Lake about four months ago. I had gotten a job as an Admissions Representative but Rooney took a steep decline over the next two weeks after that. His vets have said he has some type of neurological issue, they can't say exactly which, but it has caused him to lose function of his back legs. I made the tough decision to leave my job, knowing Rooney needed more care than I could provide while being gone over 40 hours a week. He requires assistance to do most things now and has to use a wheelchair anytime we are outdoors but still maintains his happy and endearing outlook. He inspires me everyday to stay positive and love the life I'm in. I decided to start Happy Tails in order to provide quality care to animals of all breeds, energy levels and especially for other pets like Rooney that need that extra level of help, love and understanding.
