As we head further into the month of January, we're also getting closer to coyote mating season, when coyotes become much more active and aggressive. Their mating season runs from late January to early March, and it is important that us humans take precautions to protect our pets during this time.

Coyotes CANNOT differentiate between their natural prey and small pets, so they will see outdoor cats and small dogs as a potential food source. Also, they can't distinguish between bigger dogs from an intruding coyote, and will be aggressive to them because they think those bigger dogs are competition for territory and mates. Pets should be directly supervised on a leash when outdoors. Most coyote attacks are on dogs in backyards being supervised from a distance.

Please remove human associated food from your yard such as birdseed, garbage, compost, and pet food, as these attract coyotes and can make them more use to residential areas and more bold around us humans.
