Dogs are similar to us in more ways than most realize. They learn through repetition, will find shortcuts when possible, and will try to anticipate outcomes. This is an example of that. Ares likes to slouch into a “down” when doing a return to heel or going onto his place table. While this isn’t a major infraction, we don’t want this to be the standard. When asking for these behaviors, we tend to set patterns in our training. And just like us, dogs are creatures of habit. If the down follows the heel, place, or recall command every single time, you can expect them to eventually begin offering that command because it’s been reinforced repeatedly.
Instead, try and throw them a curve ball occasionally to build a dog who actively awaits the next command as opposed to a dog who thinks they “knows what’s coming next”. Good luck!

🐾Does your dog bolt for the door just because it opened? Then this video is for you!
🐾We’re trying to promote good habits in our dogs. Teaching them to THINK instead of REACT can have huge benefits in your daily routine. Start by using lower-level triggers (keys jingling, knock at the door, putting on shoes, etc.) and a leash before working towards things like you see in the video. If we’re going to deny them the ability to react, then we must give them a separate task to occupy their mind. I like to use “place”, but you can use whatever is applicable. Some options are down-stay in a separate room, “wait” at the kennel, etc. expose your dog to these triggers, then reward them when the correct decision has been made. Before you know it, you will have a dog that is confident and in a much calmer state of mind because of it. Hope this helps!

🐾Training off-leash behaviors doesn’t come over night! The process can be a little different for every dog. Some require more assistance and more repetitions initially to gain the confidence they need to perform independently. And then some just want to work and offer behaviors that have been reinforced.
