This Black History Month, we reflect on the profound impact of Black trailblazers in veterinary medicine. Leaders like Dr. Alfreda Johnson, who became one of the first Black women to earn a veterinary degree, and Dr. John Brown, head of the Division of Agricultural Instruction at the Tuskegee Institute, have left an indelible mark on the profession. Their perseverance and dedication continue to inspire us, advancing both animal care and societal progress.

Black veterinarians today continue to break barriers and drive meaningful change within the profession. Their contributions, along with those of past pioneers, have strengthened veterinary medicine and paved the way for a more inclusive and diverse future. As we look forward, we honor their legacy and continue to build on their remarkable achievements. 💙

Meet Cannoli, the newest member of our team and our enthusiastic Chief Chomp Officer! Her daily mission? Delivering surprise chomps with style—whether it’s loose shoelaces, dangling sleeves, or even a friendly hand (she swears it’s all in good fun). Off-duty, Cannoli enjoys deer antlers, getting her picture taken and spreading laughter across the office with her endless energy. With Cannoli around, there’s never a dull moment! 🐶✨

Trevor joins us with an incredible track record of leadership and experience. He’s held CFO roles at VCA Animal Hospitals and BluePearl, along with key finance positions at Mars Petcare, Banfield, and even earlier in his career at PwC and Deloitte. With a deep understanding of both the veterinary and healthcare industries, Trevor is perfectly positioned to help our hospitals grow and thrive, while continuing to support our veterinary teams in meaningful ways.

What stands out most about Trevor is his commitment to building strong teams and his thoughtful approach to leadership. “I’m thrilled to work alongside so many great teams across our network of hospitals and at the Support Center to make an even greater impact for the pets and communities we serve.”, said Trevor.

We’re excited to welcome Jason Heffelfinger as AmeriVet’s new CEO!

Jason brings a wealth of experience in building and growing multi-site services businesses while bringing out the best in teams – helping them succeed and thrive together. From building out the veterinary services business at Petco to leading a provider-based dental services organization at Dental Care Alliance (DCA), he’s demonstrated a deep understanding of how to scale operations while supporting teams in delivering exceptional care. His vision and commitment to strengthening partnerships across AmeriVet make him the ideal person to guide us into our next chapter.

“I’m incredibly humbled and excited to be back in the veterinary industry and lead such an amazing organization in Amerivet. Orin and the team have done a tremendous job of setting Amerivet and all of their partner veterinarians up for future success, and I am delighted to be a part of it," said Heffelfinger.

We also want to take a moment to thank Orin Litman, co-founder of AmeriVet, for his incredible leadership over the past year as CEO. His efforts to grow and structure the organization have truly set us up for long-term success. We’re grateful that he’ll continue to lend his expertise and support to AmeriVet in his role as an executive Board member.
