AMERICAN CURL?

This little girl just came in from Kuwait. I initially thought she was a Scottish Fold with wonky ears.

But now I'm leaning towards American Curl.

LAST WEEK IN REVIEW

So, last week, we took in 20 cats.

Yes - you read that right.

20.

I (Beth) am the initial point of intake for all incoming cats. I assess each cat's physical condition, do whatever grooming is needed, complete the anti-parasite protocol (treatments for fleas, ear mites, coccidia/giardia, intestinal parasites, etc), start treatment for any common illnesses they are showing symptoms of (like diarrhea, upper respiratory infection, etc), and I get them into the vet for exams/combo testing/vaccinations/etc.

And I'm the only one here right now. Lori has been dealing with some pretty serious health issues for the last several months - she is focusing on recovery (❤️). But this means I'm basically triaging - focusing on what really needs to happen at any given moment. 😁 And is why I've not been posting a lot & have fallen behind on correspondence.

So last week was a *really* busy week. This week isn't much better. And next week is crazy too.

I have surgeries scheduled almost every day next week. Multiple surgeries every day. Spays. Dentals (all of which include extractions). Hernia repair. Entropian surgery (bi-lateral lower eyelid repair).

I'm slightly overwhelmed. Slightly exhausted. And next week is going to be CRAZY expensive.

PS - this is Juno. He came from Kuwait. He's a young cat (2-3 yrs). Our guess is that he had some kind of trauma to his face. And he needs multiple teeth on his right side removed. His oral surgery is scheduled for Monday.

Two more Maine C***s were brought into the same shelter Cosette ended up in. Brought in by the same woman. 🤔

I have my suspicions. But I'm thankful the woman brought the cats somewhere they can get help.

These boys are sick & have some pretty serious eye issues going on.

Shelter staff reached out & asked if we can help these babies too. I said yes.

We need help getting these two cats from the Houston area to us here in San Antonio (Converse).

PS - no. We are not looking to adopt out these cats. They are sick & injured. They need vetting, assessment, and help before adoption.

COSETTE UPDATE!!

My assessment of Cosette. She's not 4.2lbs (as I was initially told). She's a couple pounds more. So not *much* more. And she's still severely underweight. I can feel all the bones along her back. 😞

She is eating, drinking, peeing pooping. Her teeth look good - I'd estimate her age at 3-5 yrs.

The shelter reported that she had upper respiratory symptoms. I gave her a Convenia shot. And she's been good - no eye/nose discharge, no sneezing. So she's good there.

I took Cosette into Schertz Animal Hospital today. They took blood & urine to send into the lab for a complete work up. The results will be back by Monday. (I opted to do out of clinic testing because Cosette's condition is not dire so immediate results aren't needed and the outside lab will test thyroid function too.)

I'll keep y'all updated! (We will not be accepting applications on Cosette until she has been fully assessed, vetted, and rehabbed.)

INCOMING!!!

This is the kitty we received an emergency intake request for earlier today. She was brought into a Houston area shelter as a stray. And she's in such bad shape, the shelter waived the 72 hour hold period due to her medical needs.

Obviously this is a purebreed Maine C**n. And, even if she's on the small side for her breed, she *should* weigh at least 15 pounds.

Wanna guess how much she weighs?

4.2 pounds.

I'll say it again: 4.2 pounds.

That is two thirds of Pixie's weight.

I will be getting this baby into our vet first thing tomorrow morning. She will need a complete diagnostic work-up.

And a name. She needs a name. Suggestions?

THIS IS GONNA BE A LONG WEEK

The cats flying in from Saudi Arabia were rescheduled to this week due to the snow last week. So five coming in this Wednesday.

We were also asked to take in cats from Kuwait. I'm never going to say no to cats coming from the Middle East.

So today these nine cuties arrived. I'll post info & updates as available.

Effectively, the cat population in my house will double this week. 🤦‍♀️

Etta!!!

Etta is a 6-7 year old blue point himalayan girl. She was declawed - so no kids, no other cats. She is cool with dogs.

Etta has been fully vetted (to include a senior blood panel - all normal!). Her adoption fee will be $350.

CHESTNUT!!

Chestnut was the emergency kitty from yesterday. He had not eaten in at least 3 days. His owner had taken him to the emergency vet twice this past weekend - and, basically, got zero answers. I'm not real happy with the vet care Chestnut received at the vet...for the cost, it was very minimal. The owner did what he could, what he thought was best, what he could afford. But when Chestnut did not get better, he reached out for help. (In other words, no bad mouthing the owner.)

I took Chestnut to Schertz Animal Hospital this afternoon (they opened late due to the weather). I had two guess - uti (he had several small pees, not dribbles - but undersized) or fip (given his age of 1 year). Which meant bloodwork & urinalysis.

Chestnut said "no" to being manhandled. Lol. So the clinic had to sedate him to get the needed bodily fluids. 😁 Since they had to do an ultrasound to get the urinalysis, they checked for fluid in the abdomen (sign of wet fip; there was none). And, since it had to be done anyways & he was already sedated, they neutered Chestnut.

Stephanie, the lead tech, just called me. The bloodwork was normal (whew!! No fip!). But my other suspicion was correct!

Chestnut does indeed have a urinary tract infection!! But no crystals. So we'll treat with antibiotics & pain meds. And recheck in a week.

It is a really good thing the owner reached out for help. And a wonderous thing that Lisa was available to transport yesterday. UTIs in boy cats can *quickly* become life threatening.

Today's vet visit is probably gonna be $600-700ish (my best guess). Please help us help Chestnut!!

WELL...THIS IS...UNDERWHELMING...

They said 1to 3 inches of snow. The whole state shut down. I know other areas got more. But this is a little sad. 😄

We are fine!! Staying warm. Tolliver (my pekingese) LOVES the cold weather - so he's happy.

SOS! EMERGENCY!!

We haveva sick persian kitten in Houston. We need to get him here to San Antonio asap. He has not eaten in 3 days & we need to get him to our vet NOW.

YEP. MY THOUGHTS EXACTLY.

We are getting another freeze tonight. It'll continue through Wednesday of this week. We actually have a chance for snow on Tuesday!!

Yes, yes. Y'all north of us are like "what's the big deal?". Well, the last time it snowed, Texas fell the frack apart. We deal with extreme heat - not extreme cold. We don't work that way! 😄

I already have the heaty beds, heaty housies, and heaty blankies out & going. I've already stocked up at HEB. And, outside of already scheduled doctor & vet appointments, I will be living in fluffy socks, under a fluffy blanket.
