Happy holidays, San Antonio! Aquarium Designs will be closed on Christmas Eve (Saturday), and will be open for a half-day 12-3 PM next Saturday on New Years Eve.

We will otherwise be open during normal store hours of 12-7 PM Mondays & Wednesdays- Saturdays!

See those tiny eyes? Axolotls are endemic to an underground cave system, and have thus evolved to have smaller eyeballs since vision was not the most important sense in their naturally dark habitat. You can tell a lot about an animal’s habitat by their eye size and other distinct physical features!

Did you know that plecos (H. plecostomus, or armored catfishes) are considered an invasive species in Texas waterways? They are native to Central and South America, but have made their way into Texas lakes and rivers. Unfortunately, the aquarium trade may be to blame.

Remember - not all fish are Texas natives, and NO pets should be released into a wild ecosystem! Let’s protect our rivers and do our best to rehome (not release) aquarium fish!

One of the best perks of the hobby! Growing and reproducing various species of coral in our homes preserves earth’s biodiversity and decreases the need to harvest wild coral. When we grow and sell/trade coral frags, we aid in the conservation of the ocean’s coral reefs!

IN STOCK: Warpaint Meat Corals (Acanthophyllia) are one of the hardiest and most beautiful large polyp stony coral species in the hobby. Consisting of a single, fleshy polyp grown on a spiky skeleton, these corals require low light and low/medium water flow, so finding a spot in your sand bed is best. While they are “photosynthetic” (they host algae called Zooxanthellae that provide the coral with energy), they also filter-feed and enjoy the occasional direct feeding! Due to their dazzling coloration and hardy nature, hese coral are well worth the price-point!

Mystery snails (sp. Pomacea bridgesii) and other Gastropods move by contracting their muscular foot in waves, which propels them forward. (Think of our own bodies utilizing peristalsis - involuntary muscle contractions and relaxations move food “forward” through our digestive tract.)
