December was another productive month of traveling and training veterinary professionals to use Global FAST® point-of-care ultrasound! One stop was Oahua, Hawaii, where we were blessed with some time to take in the sights.

Course participants learned practical, case-based applications for AFAST®, TFAST® and Vet BLUE® lung ultrasound in lecture, then spent the afternoon practicing life-saving, hands-on screening skills. It was a pleasure working with the team at to make point-of-care ultrasound a new core skill.

We love this feedback and the idea of giving practitioners “new eyes” to assess patients. Using the ultrasound probe as a clinical tool truly is the next major advancement in veterinary medicine, granting vets the power to "see" a patient's problem list!

Our textbook, “Point-of-Care Ultrasound Techniques for the Small Animal Practitioner” is a one-stop resource for veterinary practitioners interested in using point-of-care ultrasound as an extension of the physical exam. The 2nd Edition is now available for purchase, visit our website (fastvet.com) or link in bio to get your copy.

Every month, our FASTVetTM Premium Memberships grant you access to exclusive educational webinars. This month, Dr. Lisciandro dives into the use of our Global FAST® for heartworm disease and Caval Syndrome (CS), a life-threatening illness caused by an aberrant mass of heartworms located in the right atrium, the ventricle, and often the vena cava.

This webinar will help you build TFAST® fundamental echocardiography skills (recognizing intracardiac heartworms, pulmonary hypertension, and heartworms and “saddle thrombus” at the bifurcation of the mainstem pulmonary arteries) and use of Vet BLUE® for the detection of the “Wedge Sign” of pulmonary thromboembolism. Have a plan for heartworm retrieval! This webinar is available for FASTVetTM members via the link in our bio.

For veterinary practitioners managing fluid therapy and seeing patients with possible cardiac disease, it’s essential to accurately identify and characterize the caudal vena cava (CVC) and hepatic veins to assess for right-sided volume overload and right-sided congestive heart failure.

In this free blog resource, Dr. Greg Lisciandro demonstrates how to use the AFAST-TFAST Diaphragmatic-Hepatic (DH) view to accurately identify and characterize the CVC. Visit the link in our bio for clinical pearls, probe handling technique, and guidelines for measuring the maximum CVC height.

For additional information about imaging the CVC, consider investing in the second edition of our textbook. “Point-of-Care Ultrasound Techniques for the Small Animal Practitioner” is available for purchase on Amazon.

While congestive heart failure (CHF) is fairly common in domestic rabbits, this species is very difficult to radiographically image due to the risk of transport and restraint (both physical and chemical).

In this month’s case study, Dr. Stephanie Lisciandro demonstrates how Global FAST®— the combination of AFAST®, TFAST®, Vet BLUE as a single ultrasound examination—provides a low-impact, rapid alternative to radiography when patient stability is a concern.

The training is ideal for non-radiologist veterinarians including emergency veterinarians, all clinical specialists (internal medicine, cardiology, oncology, ophthalmology, anesthesiology, surgery, dentistry, dermatology), and general practitioners. You are going to use Global FAST as part of your physical exam to see your problem list, screen for abnormalities otherwise missed by physical exam, blood and urine testing and radiography. Global FAST is everyday ultrasound applied daily as an “extension of your physical exam.” Global FAST will revolutionize your use of ultrasound by improving patient care and saving lives in you practice. This is your new core skill and a rare opportunity to be ahead of our physician colleagues.
