Lyme disease and at least 15 other dangerous diseases are spread by ticks! Types of ticks and prevalence vary by area but they are a year-round danger to your pet. It's important to check your dog regularly, especially after they spend time outdoors.
Run your fingers through their fur with gentle pressure to feel for any small bumps. If you find a tick, follow these tips to remove it yourself or contact your veterinarian for help.
🕷️ Use tweezers (or a tick remover instrument like a Tick Key) to grasp the tick as close to the skin as possible, removing the whole head and body.
🕷️ Pull the tick straight out with slow and steady pressure. (If the head of the tick is left in the skin, it can cause an infection and still transmit disease, so make sure the whole body is removed!)
🕷️ Once the tick is removed, you can place it in a sealed container in case your vet wants to test it for diseases.
🕷️ Clean the area of your dog’s skin with soap and water then apply a pet-safe antiseptic.
🕷️ Contact your vet for advice on the next steps and recommendations for the best flea and tick prevention for your pet.

Make sure they have access to clean, fresh water and shade, and watch the clock! Restrict play times to early morning or late evening and minimize activity outside in the heat of the day. Walking on dirt or grass will decrease the risk of surface burns from the hot concrete.
