We’re thrilled to welcome a new member to our San Antonio Zoo family—a baby capybara, named Tupi, pronounced (two-pee)! 🐾

This adorable little one was born on December 3 and is already stealing hearts. Tupi is the first capybara born at San Antonio Zoo since 2000!

Capybaras, scientifically known as Hydrochoerus hydrochaeris, live in South American savannas, forests, and around bodies of water. As the largest rodent in the world, these engaging animals are highly social creatures living in herds as large as 100 members. Their love for water also provides their favorite meals consisting of grasses and water plants, using their sharp teeth to consume large quantities of vegetation, averaging 6 to 8 pounds per day for an adult capybara.

Come visit us soon and say hello to mom and baby! 💚

San Antonio Zoo is excited to announce the launch of Zoo Amigos, a monthly donor program that empowers wildlife enthusiasts and conservationists to make a lasting impact on animal care, education, and conservation. This innovative program invites supporters to join a committed community of advocates dedicated to securing a vibrant future for wildlife and wild places.

Zoo Amigos gives members the opportunity to play a pivotal role in the zoo's mission by providing consistent support to the animals in its care. By pledging monthly, donors contribute not only to the health and well-being of furry, feathered, and scaly residents but also to ensuring the continuation of critical conservation and education efforts for generations to come.

Why Join Zoo Amigos?
Increase Your Impact: Every donor makes a difference. Just $10 feeds a clouded leopard for three days, $25 nourishes a Sumatran tiger for one day, $50 supports a crash of rhinos with food for a day, and $100 sustains San Antonio Zoo's Palm Cockatoos with food and care for an entire week.
Reduce Your Footprint: Members help the planet by receiving eco-friendly digital statements each January summarizing their tax-deductible contributions, with year-round access for their convenience.
Simplify Your Giving: Zoo Amigos makes giving effortless—simply select your monthly donation amount, and you're set. Need to make adjustments? Members can change or cancel their contributions anytime.

"As stewards of wildlife and wild places, we have a responsibility to ensure their survival for generations to come," said Tim Morrow, President & CEO of San Antonio Zoo. "With Zoo Amigos, every monthly contribution becomes a building block for our zoo and a brighter, sustainable future—one where species thrive, habitats are preserved, and vital conservation efforts continue."

San Antonio Zoo invites everyone to join Zoo Amigos by visiting https://sazoo.org/monthlydonors/ to learn more about how their contributions make a difference. By becoming a Zoo Amigos member, donors take an active role in advancing conservation and education while supporting exceptional animal care.

Help us keep the roar of wildlife preservation alive! Together, we can ensure San Antonio Zoo continues to inspire, educate, and protect the extraordinary diversity of life on our planet.

San Antonio Zoo is thrilled to announce a generous $3 million donation to the Generation Zoo capital campaign from the Jack and Valerie Guenther Foundation. In recognition of this remarkable contribution, the zoo will name its premiere gift shop at the new Zoo Entrance "Valerie Guenther's Mariposa Market," commemorating Valerie Guenther's enduring legacy and dedication to the zoo.

Valerie Guenther has been an integral part of San Antonio Zoo for decades. She has served on the zoo's board since 1973 and currently holds the esteemed title of Director Emeritus. Her leadership has been pivotal, with past service of 23 years on the Executive Committee, including as Treasurer and the ByLaws, Budget, and Investment Committees.

A distinguished alumna of Stanford University, where she earned both her undergraduate degree in Political Science and her MBA in Finance, Valerie's professional career spans a diverse range of industries, including tax and accounting. Her commitment to community service is equally impressive, with leadership roles in various organizations such as the Military Civilian Club of San Antonio, Junior League of San Antonio, the Briscoe Western Art Museum, Daughters of the American Revolution, San Antonio Zoo, and many more.

Valerie's involvement with San Antonio Zoo began as one of the first group of Junior League docents, where she became affectionately known as the "zoo typist," documenting the positive impact of the docent program on the zoo and sent out school mailings, as well as co-authoring and typing the training manual for zoo docents.

This significant donation will not only support the enhancement of visitor experiences at the zoo but also stand as a testament to Valerie Guenther's unwavering commitment to conservation and education. "Valerie Guenther's Mariposa Market" will serve as a lasting tribute to her contributions, welcoming visitors with a reminder of her passion for wildlife and community.

🌍 Happy World Wildlife Conservation Day! 🌍

We’re shining a spotlight on the incredible conservation work happening at San Antonio Zoo—past, present, and future. Here are just a few highlights of how we’re making a difference:

🐠 Conchos Pupfish: Our Aquarium Team’s success in breeding this endangered species is a major milestone in preserving aquatic biodiversity. These rare fish remind us of the power of teamwork and dedication in protecting wildlife.

🦞 Blind Crayfish: Through innovative research and care, we’re safeguarding these unique creatures, ensuring their survival and the preservation of their fragile habitats.

🦎 Texas Horned Lizards: Our conservation team has been hard at work reintroducing these iconic lizards to their native Texas habitats, giving this beloved species a fighting chance for the future.

These efforts reflect our commitment to protecting biodiversity and inspiring action for wildlife conservation. A huge thank-you to our teams and supporters for making this work possible! Together, we’re securing a future for wildlife. 🌟
