DO YOU HAVE AN EMERGENCY PLAN IN PLACE FOR YOUR HORSE?

If you own horses long enough, sooner or later you are likely to be confronted with a medical emergency. Are you prepared to act? Having a clear emergency action plan will help you stay focused and effective if a crisis strikes.

Below are some basic guidelines that can help you prepare for an equine emergency:
1. Know how to reach your regular veterinarian after hours. Ask about a back-up or referring veterinarian in case your regular horse doctor is not available for emergencies.
2. Have a plan for transporting the horse is necessary and know in advance the most direct route to an equine surgery center.
3. Prepare a first aid kit (see graphic for a short list of essential items) and store it in a clean, dry, readily accessible place. Keep a first aid kit in your horse trailer or towing vehicle as well, and be sure to check your supplies periodically and restock as needed. First-aid kits can be as simple or elaborate as you’d like; seek your horse doctor's advice on what to add, especially regarding any drugs that could be included and how they should be administered.

Better understanding how horses see and what they see clearly has huge ramifications for safer eventing and cross-country course design. To begin with, horses are dichromats, which means they see a reduced number of colours compared to humans.

Kate Herren speaks to British animal vision expert Professor Martin Stevens, as well as course designers Captain Mark Phillips, Eric Winter and Wayne Copping, to find out more about how our understanding of equine sight affects course design....

“Your competition isn’t other people. Your competition is your procrastination. Your ego. The unhealthy food you’re consuming, the knowledge you neglect. The negative behavior you’re nurturing and your lack of creativity. Compete against that.”

✨Unknown

Your competition is your previous self. It always was and always will be. Choosing to turn up, grow, improve, stay humble and do the work.

You can choose to compete against other people, but ultimately the key to long term success (and happiness) is to choose to show up and be better than you were yesterday. Striving to be 1% better each day.

Putting in the work and taking action towards your goals. Not just dreaming about them, but instead doing the work and staying focused.

At the end of the day, what could be more important than the work?

The truth is the work is the journey; the work is the adventure; the work is the process through which you shape your identity and improve as a person.

To me yes I have big hairy audacious goals, but in the day to day it's not about the end goal, it's who we grow into as we strive towards that end goal. The journey is where the magic is.

And anything that distracts you from that work, that daily progress, is the true competition to try and beat. It’s the daily battles against procrastination, junk food, laziness, social media, distractions, negativity, hate, and narrow-mindedness—all influenced by the ego—that’s the REAL competition.
