Meet Dolly! ❤ This sweet girl found some delicious rocks to play with. 🤭 Thanks to some quick thinking by her owner, she was rushed to our hospital, and our skilled emergency team removed the rocks using an endoscope. That meant she didn't have to have invasive surgery, and Dolly was recovering at home in no time!

“I have been going to Family Pet Animal Hospital since I moved to Chicago. The staff is always so kind, patient, and educational—things that are important to me as an anxious cat mom! All the veterinarians are incredible and care for my cat like one of their own. I have moved around the city, but always keep Juno (my cat) at FPAH because they always take the time to talk to me through what is going on, follow up regularly, and answer any questions I may have.” — Morgan G. from Family Pet Animal Hospital, a Thrive Pet Healthcare Partner in Chicago

“Cone of Shame” or Badge of Honor? 🐶🎖️

We know—it’s called the “cone of shame,” but it’s anything but shameful! This trusty E-collar 🩺 is your pet’s best friend after surgery, protecting them from licking or chewing their stitches. 🐕 A few days of discomfort can prevent serious complications like infections 🦠, which can delay healing or cause pain.

If your pet seems frustrated 🥹, try to make wearing the cone a positive experience 🎉. Use gentle encouragement ✨, treats 🍖, or even some playtime 🎾 to help them adjust. They might look at you with those big, sad eyes 👀, but remember: you’re keeping them safe 🛡️ and healthy!

Think of it as a badge of honor 🏅—it means they’re on their way to healing. Let’s cheer on our cone-wearing champions! 🦸‍♂️🐾

Watch for Signs of Chocolate Toxicity

It’s scary when a pet eats something they shouldn’t. If your dog or cat gets into chocolate, it’s important to act quickly. The first symptoms of chocolate toxicity include vomiting and diarrhea, which may seem minor at first. But if untreated, it can worsen to excessive thirst, restlessness, increased heart rate, or even seizures.

The severity depends on the type and amount of chocolate ingested, so don’t wait—call your veterinarian or an emergency clinic immediately if you think your pet may have eaten any chocolate. Acting fast can make all the difference.

Your pet is depending on you to keep them safe and healthy. Let’s keep them out of harm’s way!

“Dr. Basilio and the staff at Thrive Pet Healthcare saved my dogs life! I cannot thank them enough, they were absolutely amazing! My dog had kennel cough, which quickly turned into double pneumonia and sepsis. Dr. Basilio was quick to come up with a treatment plan and told me we needed to act quick because he didn’t look good. She was kind, patient, and understanding with me. Dr. Basilio’s quick actions saved Lupo and he has made an incredible comeback! He’s still on the mend, but he looks better every day!

Did you know your pet’s favorite toys could be hiding harmful bacteria, yeast, or mold? 😱 Regular cleaning keeps your furry friends happy, healthy, and ready for more playtime! Here’s how:

🐾 For Hard Toys:
Scrub them with hot, soapy water, rinse thoroughly, and disinfect with a solution of ½ tablespoon bleach in 1 gallon of water. Let them air dry for a squeaky-clean finish!

🐾 For Soft Toys:
Toss them in your washing machine on the hottest cycle, then tumble dry on low. Easy peasy!

Your pet deserves toys that are as clean as they are fun. 🐕🐾 Make it a habit to wash their toys regularly—your pet (and your nose) will thank you!

“I can't thank the team at Elk Grove Veterinary Specialty & Emergency enough. I called on a Sunday morning after seeing something alarming with my dog. The entire team was very kind, caring, and loving toward my dog, Gordon. Adrienne even brought a bed in so Gordon could be comfortable while we waited for his test results. Obviously no pet owner wants to need emergency services for their furry family member, but if the need arises I absolutely recommend Elk Grove Veterinary Specialty & Emergency. Staff even followed up with us, and when I was unsure about his symptoms after his visit, they took the time again to check with the vet and provide me options. Happy to report Gordon is on the mend and feeling much better. Thank you!” — Gabriella D. on her experience at Elk Grove Veterinary Specialty and Emergency

cancer is a leading cause of illness in pets, but early detection can make all the difference. Staying alert for symptoms and acting quickly can significantly improve your pet’s chances of recovery. Spotting the signs sooner allows for timely treatment and a better quality of life.

Remember, it’s important to have pet insurance early in your pet's life so a cancer diagnosis is not considered a pre-existing condition.

🎃 Happy Howl-o-ween from Thrive Pet Healthcare- Terrell Plaza Hospital! 🐾

Halloween is all about treats and tricks, but let’s make sure it’s a safe celebration for everyone – humans and pets alike! Here are some tips to keep your furry friends safe and your holiday full of fun:

👻 No Tricks with Treats! Keep the candy out of paw’s reach – chocolate and sweeteners like xylitol can be dangerous for pets.

🎃 Costumes with Care: Make sure your pet’s costume is comfortable and doesn’t restrict their movement, vision, or breathing. If they’re happier without it, a festive collar or bandana is a perfect alternative!

🕯️ Decor with Caution: Curious noses + candles or cords = possible accidents! Opt for battery-operated candles in your jack-o’-lanterns to keep things spooky and safe.

🍬 Stranger Danger: Some pets may be spooked by all the new faces in costumes. Consider setting up a cozy, quiet space for them to retreat to during trick-or-treat time. Making sure your pets microchip information is also up to date is very important in case our furry friends accidentally run out of the house.

Wishing you and your pets a safe and “spook-tacular” Halloween! 🎃🧡 Share your pet’s costume pics with us!

🥣 Clean Bowls = Clean Paws! 🐾

Cleaning your pet’s food and water bowls isn’t just about avoiding germs—it also keeps pests like ants and flies away from your pet’s meals! 🚫🐜 Bugs are attracted to food residue, so make sure your pet’s eating area is clean for a bug-free zone. Plus, no one wants to eat next to yesterday’s leftovers!

🧽 Pro tip: Wash bowls daily and sanitize weekly with a water-vinegar solution!

🐾 Why Dental Cleanings for Dogs and Cats Are So Important!🐾

🦷 Did you know your pet's teeth need as much attention as yours? Just like us, our furry friends can develop plaque, tartar, and painful gum disease if their teeth aren't regularly cleaned. That's why routine dental cleanings are key to keeping your dog or cat happy, healthy, and full of smiles! 😸🐶

Without proper care, dental disease can lead to more serious health issues, like infections that can spread to the heart, kidneys, or liver. Yikes! But don’t worry—professional cleanings can work wonders. It’s not just about fresh breath (though that’s a nice bonus!); dental cleanings can help your pet feel better overall 🪥 😃

Swipe through the photos to see the ✨Amazing✨ before and after of a dental cleaning we performed on a dog. You can see the transformation—sparkling clean teeth and healthier gums! 🌟 The best part? This pup is now doing fantastic, feeling great, and even more eager to show off their pearly whites! 🦷✨

Remember, brushing your pet's teeth at home and scheduling regular cleanings with your vet are the best ways to keep your pet's smile shining and their health in check. So, let’s keep those tails wagging and purrs going strong!

Kidney (or renal) disease is very common in dogs and cats, and it may be reversible or permanent based on underlying causes. The disease could be a result of age-related changes to the kidneys, acute injury or toxin ingestion, congenital defects present from birth, or in rare cases, a side effect of some medications. To prevent kidney disease or slow its progression, it's vital to stay regular with wellness visits so that together, we can monitor renal levels with blood work and urinalysis and catch any changes ASAP.

Pets can’t advocate for their needs like us humans can, and many owners fail to recognize signs of osteoarthritis (OA), often chalking it up to pets “slowing down with age.” OA is common in dogs and cats ages six and up, so to help champion their health, we’re sharing the key signs of this degenerative joint disease so that you know when it’s time to seek veterinary support. If your pet is . . .

• Struggling to climb up or down stairs
• Having trouble jumping up or down
• Slow to rise from a resting position
• Lagging behind on walks or during play
. . you should discuss these concerns with us. The good news is highly effective treatments exist to help manage the chronic pain associated with OA and increase their mobility. With the right pain management, your pet can get back to being themselves again! To learn more about OA and treatment options, visit: https://www.thrivepetcare.com/be-their-champion

We get it: when your pet is itchy, you start to scratch, too! The good news is your pet doesn’t have to live with incessant itchiness. Learn to spot the signs, then book a visit so that together, we can discover the cause and explore options for long-lasting relief, like:

Cyptopoint®: an injectable therapy that provides 4 to 8 weeks of allergy relief with a single in-office dose. ¹ Plus, for a limited time, get $25 off when you buy 2 doses of Cytopoint. ²

Or Apoquel®: an oral medicine that can be given at home for fast relief of allergic itch.³

Terms apply see thrivepetcare.com/be-their-champion. ³ Apoquel® (oclacitinib tablet) and Apoquel® Chewable (oclacitinib chewable tablet) IMPORTANT SAFETY INFORMATION: Do not use Apoquel or Apoquel Chewable in dogs less than 12 months of age or those with serious infections. Apoquel and Apoquel Chewable may increase the chances of developing serious infections and may cause existing parasitic skin infestations or pre-existing cancers to get worse. Consider the risks and benefits of treatment in dogs with a history of recurrence of these conditions. New neoplastic conditions (benign and malignant) were observed in clinical studies and postapproval. Apoquel and Apoquel Chewable have not been tested in dogs receiving some medications including some commonly used to treat skin conditions such as corticosteroids and cyclosporines. ‼️Attention Pet Owners: The Hidden Danger of Foxtails 🌾

☀️As we enjoy the warmer weather and spend more time outdoors with our furry friends, it's crucial to be aware of a hidden danger lurking in fields, roadsides, and hiking trails: foxtails. These seemingly harmless plants can pose a significant threat to our pets, leading to serious health issues if not promptly addressed

❓What Are Foxtails?
Foxtails, also known as grass awns, are spiky grass seeds that detach easily and can embed themselves into your pet's skin. During the spring and summer months, these plants are prevalent across much of the US, thriving in open fields, along roadsides, and on hiking trails.

⭐️Why Are Foxtails Dangerous?
Foxtails are designed to burrow into the ground to germinate, and unfortunately, they can do the same to your pet. Once embedded in your pet's skin, ears, paws, nose, or even eyes, foxtails can cause severe pain and infections. If not promptly removed, they can migrate through the body, leading to more serious complications that may require surgical intervention.

Signs Your Pet May Have a Foxtail:
- Excessive Licking or Chewing 👅: If your pet is constantly licking or chewing at a particular spot, it could be trying to remove a foxtail.
- Redness or Swelling: Look for any signs of redness, swelling, or discharge, particularly in the paws, ears, and nose.
- Limping:If a foxtail gets stuck in your pet's paw, it can cause pain and limping.

Prevention Tips:
1. Regular Inspections: After walks or outdoor activities, thoroughly check your pet from nose to tail, especially focusing on the ears, paws, and nose.
2. Grooming: Keep your pet’s fur trimmed, especially around the paws and ears, to reduce the risk of foxtails attaching.
3. Avoid High-Risk Areas: Try to avoid walking your pet in areas where foxtails are prevalent, particularly during peak seasons.
4. Protective Gear: Consider using protective gear like booties or vests for your dog when hiking in areas known to have foxtails.

**What to Do If You Find a Foxtail:**
If you find a foxtail on your pet and can remove it safely, do so immediately. However, if it’s embedded too deeply or you’re unsure how to proceed, contact us to schedule an appointment so that we may assist you. Prompt removal and follow-up care are essential to prevent infections and complications.

🐶Let's keep our beloved pets safe and healthy by staying vigilant and proactive. Share this information with fellow pet owners and make foxtail awareness a priority this season 🐱
