We have some exciting news! To help us out since we have been so busy Dr. Lavallee has agreed to join our team...again! Those who recall the amazing Dr. Olson will be excited to see her return as Dr. Lavallee. Since leaving us she has gotten married and had children but kept her passion for cats and Alamo Feline. Here is her bio for those who haven't had the pleasure and a refresher for those who have. She will be starting in April on a part time basis so get your appointment scheduled now!

Introducing Dr. Jen Lavallee

If you were a client during 2012-2014, you may recognize the face, as Dr. Lavallee was an associate doctor at Alamo Feline Health Center. At the time, she worked as Dr. Olson – her maiden name. She might have stayed on forever, but an opportunity to work with her father, who is also a feline veterinarian, arose, and she couldn’t pass it up. So, she went to Colorado, bought her father’s practice, and worked with her father as her employee! During this time, she also got married and had 2 awesome kids. But she and her husband felt San Antonio was home, so they made the decision to head south to Texas. She has taken a little time to be a stay-at-home mom with her kids, and this has honed her patience, flexibility, and sense of humor. 😊 Dr. Lavallee is thrilled to be back with the stellar team at Alamo Feline. She feels this is a special practice and somewhere that has both state of the art and state of the heart medicine.

She is a fourth-generation veterinarian, following in the footsteps of her father, grandfather, grandmother, and great-grandfather. Dr. Lavallee earned her BS in Microbiology from University of California, Davis in 2005, and her DVM degree from Cornell University in 2009. After graduation, she completed a small animal internship, worked on dogs & cats in general practice and emergency, and then settled into feline medicine/surgery for 9 years. She has completed advanced courses in feline ultrasound, laser surgery, nuclear medicine/radiation safety, and feline dentistry. Dr. Lavallee has written veterinary publications, edited chapters in the previous edition of Dr. Norsworthy’s Feline Patient textbook and been a speaker at national conferences. She loves learning and teaching and believes in practicing common sense medicine.

Dr. Lavallee enjoys hiking, about anything “sporty” and ice cream. While she appreciates that every cat is like a snowflake, special in their own way, she is always drawn to black cats thanks to her heart kitty, Samson, a black cat from the shelter that she had for over 15 years. He lived for 3.5 years after a lymphoma diagnosis thanks to protocols from Alamo Feline!

We love seeing our frequent flyers and it's fun to get to see pictures of them in their home life. This Whisker Wednesday meet Evgeni (who eats better then a lot of our staff it sounds like)!

I introduce to everyone Evgeni! FUN FACT: She is named after Evgeni Malkin of the Pittsburgh Penguins. Her nicknames are E (for those who can’t pronounce her name) and girlfriend.Evgeni is different compared to other cats I had. She is very smart, She knows my morning and night routine better than I do, and she is very patient with my 5 year old son. Evgeni came into my life when she was just a few months old and 15 years has flown by! She’s been diagnosed with lymphoma, kidney disease, and diabetes. I don’t know how much time I have left with her so we are making the most of it. I let her break her diet and she gets to enjoy her favorites….steaks, rotisserie chicken, bacon, and ranch dressing.

There are many types of cats in the world and each has its own personality. I have had to honor to work with and house many types of cats. There is the too beautiful for their own good (I know a few people like that), a look but don’t touch, and the ones that scare even the 100 lb dog and so many more. I have cats that bring me joy and angst on a daily basis. Here are my cats and instead of their origin stories I’m just going to let you know their personality type. Some of them you may have met as I have a habit of bringing home the retired clinic cats (I’m hoping Phil will be willing to pack his bags some day and move on in with me). I have Pikachu the bottle baby who the dogs give a 10 ft radius for safety. Domiano (retired clinic cat) who wants to be with me at all times, privacy in the bathroom is unheard of, but remains the ever-aloof cat. Hongo (also retired clinic cat) who thinks if you stop moving that is signal to let him lay on you for pets and purrs, if you aren’t giving him constant attention than what are you doing with your life? Twilight who is to pretty for humans, and Ebano (retired clinic cat, sometimes gets pulled out of retirement to save lives) who is the brains of the operation.
If anyone else would like to share their stories feel free to email us.

This week for Whisker Wednesday we thought you guys might want to meet one of our doctors feline family. We are posting about Terio and Grey Cat Durso. Hopefully you have had the chance to meet and have your cat cared for by Dr. Durso, she is one in a million and we are lucky to have her. (Terio is large and in charge, he makes Phil feel good about his weight!)
If you have a story to tell about your cat(s), send it on over, we love to see and share them. Send to [email protected]

Terio is Dr. Durso’s cat. He is a big boy weighing in at 26 lbs. He and his littermates were left outside of the emergency clinic she was working at in 2014. Terio is nothing short of a miracle. He was diagnosed with FIP in 2019 and survived with an experimental antiviral treatment. He is full of personality and is living life to the fullest. He loves to snuggle everyone (literally everyone- dogs, cats, non-screaming babies), fetch his toys and he will never miss a meal.

In case you guys got busy with the new year let me remind you it is WHISKER WEDNESDAY! These kitten pictures could bring out cute aggression so use caution (it did for our staff!).
Keep sending all this amazingness to us at [email protected]

I’ve been loving your Whisker Wednesdays and thought I would share my story of my kids! :)

Here are my 3 amazing kitties! I adopted Bob (gray tabby) from the San Diego Humane society. Bob was an only child for 11 years and we have had so many amazing adventures together. We moved to Texas in 2018 and I bought a house! Bob was the king of the castle until one day in 2022 his world was changed forever! I went to work and there were 3 kittens that were found drowning. They were saved and needed to be bottle fed and fostered. I was asked to help out and fell in love! I fostered the 3 siblings for 2 months when two different coworkers adopted 2 of the kittens and Bob got his Texas sister, “Belle” (Calico). Bob and Belle get along so well! I was worried as Bob had been an only child for so long but Belle keeps Bob young at heart! Then in 2023 Bob learned his mom was crazy! There were 3 new kittens that fell from a ceiling at work and once again they needed a foster! Of course I stepped up and I vowed not to be a foster fail and keep one again! Once I introduced the kittens to Bob and Belle, Belle became a mama kitty and adopted the most exploratory kitten Dora (black and white long fur) for me. Belle and Dora are inseparable (and could be related…). This is how Bob got his two sisters! Now, Bob is 13 years old, Belle 1.5 years old and Dora 8 months old! Belle does get to have play dates with her siblings as Dora does as well (my cousin has one of Dora’s brothers and my coworker adopted Dora’s sister). I never imagined that Bob would be such a great big brother with how challenging he can be at the vet sometimes :) I now bring Belle as Bob’s emotional support kitty when we go to the vet and Bob is way nicer to the vet techs and Dr. Durso.

Whisker Wednesday with a heartwarming tale right after the holidays. It's always amazing to see people open their homes and their hearts to animals in need, and how quickly a cat can work their way in to controlling your life. Thank you Ms. Ruiz for letting us see how much you care. It reminds us why we do what we do.

Benny’s Story

December 17, 2021 my neighbor Janet Dumas, who manages a feral cat colony in our neighborhood asked if I would come visit her newest rescue a couple times while she was away for the weekend. I agreed so she then asked me to come over and meet “her”. As I walked into the bedroom, there was a very large black crate up on the bed with a teeny tiny little fluff of fur in the farthest corner.

My initial thought was, “How can I meet her if I can’t reach her without causing more trauma than she had already been through?” As soon as I closed the door behind me, Bella, the name Janet gave her, got up with all the confidence of a huge lion and walked straight for me almost implying, “Where were you?! I’ve been waiting all night for you to come get me.”

As Janet pointed out after, it was love at first sight. Bella was so tiny that there was no way I felt okay leaving her alone over the weekend. With Janet’s help, we hauled the crate over to my house and placed it in front of the electric fireplace in the living room where Bella sat comfortably watching Cat TV. Being a mama of 3 grown children, I could still remember that babies need their mama close by while they sleep so I slept downstairs in the recliner with one eye open.
I pray we will have many fun-filled years together and he remains healthy. So Benny was our “new” kitten on that day. He is very independent but overly obsessed with keeping mama in his sight at all times. He just turned 2 and is so silly and makes us laugh every day. I’ve had cats all my life but never a mostly black cat nor one as unusual as Benny. . He just had a visit with Dr. Norsworthy who said his 13.3 lb weight was mostly muscle and that he was just purrfect. We happen to agree! 🐈‍⬛❤️

Whisker Wednesday! Identical twins, not by birth but by looks for sure. Daisy and Lucy made sure to up the cuteness factor even when at the doctor. Check them out in our Pink Panther room. Keep these amazing stories coming, it is amazing to get to know everyone!

Two of my babies who have thankfully been healthy and happy for years, now at 11 and 10 years old. This is young Daisy and baby Lucy who were visiting one day for their annual and booster shots. Both are Oklahoma-born calicos. Daisy (on top) was found wandering my brother’s property all by herself, no mama or siblings in sight. Lucy (bottom shelf) was turned into the OKC shelter after a tornado in late spring of 2013. I had been helping trap and reunite cats with their families up there in May 2013 after a big tornado hit Moore, OK, and was watching daily shelter intakes for possible matches to missing pets. She looked like Daisy’s mini-me so I had to meet her and then I adopted her.

It's Whisker Wednesday! We love hearing about everyone's feline family members! Please keep sending us stories and photos!
Today we get to meet Asia, Annie and Lilo! Prepare yourself for a cuteness overload.

Asia originally was fostered by an Abilene Humane Society volunteer with her bio mama, Amelia, & her litter bro, Asa. I adopted her right before I completed my Master’s degree, hence her nickname, “Grad Cat.” My feline traveler, who loved water & the great outdoors, lived with me in West Central Texas & Nor-Cal, before we settled in the Rio Grande Valley, where her vet referred us to Dr. Norsworthy in San Antone for her hyperthyroidism cure. Thanks to Dr. N & his AFHC staff, Big Asia’s life was extended until we reached her 14th adoption ANNIE-versary. Her “deep-blue-need-you eyes”, the way she always lovingly groomed her Baby Sis Annie, her CAT-itude + hiding under blankets & rolling around the grass are what I miss most about my “Biggie Smalls.”

Annie found me as she jumped from my front yard tree, likely because she sensed her Big Sis, Asia, on me. For the following decade, my kitty sisters were inseparable & always spooned each other. Since shy, yet vocal bright green-eyed & bushy-tailed Ann, with her gray spots that sometimes look like hearts on her white fur, has always made her way to my keyboards to warm up when I “PHinisheD” my PhD, I started calling her “Stats Cat,” + since I’ve taken her to the universities where I worked, & she’s popular in my virtual classroom, I also call her “Faculty Feline.” With Ann’s precious heart of gold, it’s no wonder that her heart murmur led us back to AFHC, where Dr. Norsworthy also treats her for her CKD. My “Sweet Annie” is the queen of my heart.

Lilo actually has a history that I only recently found out about from my neighbor after already rescuing her when she’d been lingering around our garden. Her original name was Toulouse, but her human mom died from cancer, & the rest of their household neglected her outside, along with our outdoor trio who we’ve since taken under our care. Therefore, our blue-eyed Ragdoll princess has two Disney character namesakes. Like her sisters, Asia & Annie, Lilo also keeps me company while researching & teaching, as my “ScholastiKITTY” in our crew of “PURRdue Boiler Cats.” Although our youngest girl makes the “purr-fect” lap cat, she’s about to see Dr. Norsworthy for an abdominal ultrasound & needs good vibes.

We decided we would love to get to know all our patients a little better as they are at home and their stories. We are going to start doing Whisker Wednesdays! If you would like to send us some photos and your cats story, we will pick one each week to feature. Send your stories and photos to our email [email protected].
To start it off we are posting our clinic cat Phil. He's been posted before but how can you not want to see his adorable face again. He willingly volunteered for the photo (with treat incentive).
Phil came from humble beginnings of a street cat that wondered to us at the right time. He was adopted by one of our older clients who soon after passed away. With all that emotional baggage he came back to Alamo to stay. He vowed never to love again but we have slowly won him over. If you come for an appointment you will see our big guy laid out in the hall or taking one of his many naps in the office. Here is Phil with his party hat on to celebrate our first Whisker Wednesday!
