In our line of work, we often experience cases of adult kids of seniors gifting their parents puppies and dogs out of concern for their loneliness or need for companionship. While their intentions are noble, it tends to become a bad situation for the parents and the dog. So when choosing a furry companion for a senior citizen, please consider breed, age, temperament and physical limitations of the new owner. Small dog breeds often live for more than 15 years, so for a person in their 80s a puppy may not be the best choice as the dog may outlive them. Arthritic hands and other limitations can make daily walks and cleaning up messes a hardship. Puppy nipping and mouthing and thin skin aren't a good combination either. Puppies of any breed can be very spazzy and energetic meaning jumping up and charging out of the door, presenting a a tripping hazard. Please consider adopting one of the very many senior dogs in the shelters. They're usually very calm and already come with house training. You'll be enriching a senior's life as well as giving a sweet old dog a much deserved rest of their life ❤️

Treats can be a great tool when training a puppy with basic commands but be careful how often you use them, dogs do become treat dependent!
