Black Tri
A lot of bulldogs have black genes in their lineage, but to get a black tri you need the cute tan points on their paws, cheeks, and eyebrows. Their eyes will come out dark brown. They may have a fawn undercoat and should always be shiny. Their nose and paw pads especially should be very black. Tri-colored bulldogs are valuable not only for their breed but for how unique the color patterns of each dog can turn out.
Catahoula Bulldog
The Catahoula Bulldog is a cross between the Catahoula Leopard Dog and American Bulldog, according to DogTime. Unlike some other bulldog breeds, they are incredibly energetic and athletic, meaning they'll need quite a bit of exercise. These bulldogs are very intelligent, loyal, and protective, making them stellar watchdogs. DogTime notes that you can often find them in shelters and breed-specific rescues, and recommends generally trying to adopt a bulldog breed before shopping for one.
Victorian Bulldog
The Victorian Bulldog is similar to an English Bulldog except these doggies were bred by breeding English Bulldogs, Bull Terriers, Bullmastiffs and Staffordshire Bull Terriers to develop a much healthier breed, according to the Animal Corner. That said, they are taller than English Bulldogs (at about 17 to 19 inches) and have a larger snout plus fewer wrinkles. This means their face isn't so squished that it inhibits their breathing. They have similar personality traits to other bulldogs such as being super loyal and protective, but very gentle and affectionate. Victorian Bulldogs demand lots of attention as they can suffer from separation anxiety, but they aren't overly active dogs — so just curling up with them at night is enough comfort.
Brindle French Bulldog
One of my favorite color patterns, which also happens to be one of the most popular, is the Brindle. It’s important to know that Brindle isn’t really a specific color. Rather, it’s a color and pattern.
Brindle usually features dark colors, such as a combination of different degrees/shades of brown and a “dusky tawny” color. At the same time, there are thin black colored stripes that give the coat a unique texture. It’s almost like a tiger’s coat, which explains why Brindle is sometimes called the “tiger stripe.”
This Brindle color isn’t exclusive to French Bulldogs. They’re seen in other dog breeds, guinea pigs, cattle and sometimes horses. Still, I admit they look the best on a Frenchie.
French Bulldog
The French bulldog is descended from the English bulldog. In the mid-1800s, some toy-sized bulldogs were being bred in England, and they were brought to France with their emigrating owners. In France, these small bulldogs were bred with other breeds, possibly pugs and small terriers, and transformed to the French bulldog we know today, a small bulldog with large bat ears and a huge personality. This new Bouledogue Français, was a huge hit in Paris, and eventually spread to Europe and the United States, where they remain immensely popular. French bulldogs, or Frenchies as they are affectionately known, are exceptional companions, particularly with children. They are adaptable, active and playful with very steady temperaments.
The Valley bulldog is a rare bulldog variety that Canadians developed in the Annapolis Valley of Novia Scotia, Canada. This breed is a hybrid of English bulldogs with boxers; they share characteristics of both breeds. They tend to be friendly, athletic, and sometimes even a bit goofy (likely inherited from their boxer side). These hybrids are working dogs for catching livestock and protecting rural property like ranches and farms. Boxer-bulldog mixes are effective guard dogs today, inheriting the boxer’s alertness and suspicion of strangers.
Olde English Bulldogge
While immediately descended from the English bulldog, this American breed was developed to produce a more healthy and athletic dog. The United Kennel Club officially recognized it in 2014. They are larger, less flat-faced, and more agile and energetic than the English variety. They are strong-willed and formidable guard dogs and are usually gentle and affectionate towards their family.
Australian Bulldog
This handsome breed is much like the English and Victorian Bulldog. Not only are their looks on par, but they also share similar personality traits. These husky canines are short in stature and weigh an average of 50-78 pounds.
They are highly adaptable to many environments, making them suitable for both small and spacious living. While they may have issues with dominance, they tend to get along quite well with humans and creatures alike. They are exceedingly intelligent, charmingly spirited, and fiercely loyal.
The lifespan of this breed is 10-12 years. Because of their breeding, they have a reduced number of ailments. However, they are prone to heat-related issues and skin infections.
French Bulldog has been the most popular bulldog-type breed. Also known as the Frenchie, these dogs were bred down in size to serve as attractive companions suitable for most families.
The English Bulldog is where it all started. Historical evidence points to these dogs first being developed in the 13th century in England. Back then, they were primarily used for the blood-sport, that is, bull-baiting.
