STILL WAITING... 🥺

Sweet Lucky is STILL waiting for his forever home!

Lucky is an approximately 2.5-year old mix who was saved off the euthanasia list at North Central as a puppy and then abandoned alongside 30+ other dogs by a supposed "rescue" for two years. Him and the other rescues were thankfully cared for by , then taken into our program with the help of !

This big lug is an absolute sweetheart who loves to occupy himself with squeaky toys, bones, and rolling around in the grass. He would love an owner or family looking for a dog that will chill with them on the couch without being too clingy while still being a great walking, hiking, or running buddy.

Lucky is available for adoption through and will receive two FREE training sessions from us upon adoption, as well as 25% off future training. He can be nervous at times so he'll need some time to warm up, but once he picks his people he is the sweetest and goofiest boy!

NEVER FORGET 🕯️

23 years ago today, our country experienced the deadliest terrorist attack in American history.

Today, we're taking the time to remember and honor the incredible bravery, strength, and commitment of both humans and dogs shown during the downfall of the World Trade Center.

Guide dogs brought their handlers and other injured civilians to safety, police K9s kept the peace, therapy dogs assisted first responders and survivors, and Search & Rescue dog teams saved hundreds of lives finding those trapped under the rubble.

HeroicK9s Family, we ask that you please take a moment to put aside opinions regarding race, politics, and other controversial topics and recognize the importance of unity of the American people. It is up to us to remember the aftermath and keep the memory of these extraordinary individuals alive.

WE'RE MELTING 🥵

With yet another heat wave hitting San Diego we're dealing with panting, sweating, and LOTS of shedding! Pinky is pretty grumpy about it, even in the AC 😩

Here are some easy and affordable ways to keep your dog cool in the nastiness:

- Fill a treat dispensing chew with wet food, pumpkin puree, or yogurt and toss it in the freezer for a longer lasting snack

- Soak a bandana (check out !) in ice water and have your dog wear it on walks

- Freeze a dog-friendly vegetable like carrot or bell pepper and offer it as a crunchy treat

- Stick a bowl of bone broth or chicken broth with treats and kibble in it into the freezer to make a DIY enrichment toy

- Fill a plastic kiddie pool with ice, put it in your backyard, and let your dog chillllll out

ADOPTABLE MARLEY 💛

If you haven't already met Marley, this loving hound mix is a high energy pup looking for an active owner or family that will take him on all of their adventures!

Formerly known as Walnut, Marley was adopted from at just a few months old. Unfortunately, due to moving overseas, his adoptive family had to relinquish him back to the rescue.

Marley has been living in a foster home for the last few months where he's been thriving! He is crate trained, potty trained, walks well on leash, and is very motivated to work for food and affection. We could see him being trained in all sorts of tricks, and he may even make a good sport dog for lure coursing, flyball, or agility! Because of his breed tendencies, any kid or dog housemates in his new family must be his size or larger.

THROWING IT BACK ⏪

This Thursday, we're bringing back a great opportunity to get your dog out & about while still having the guidance of a trainer!

Be sure to register for our group pack walk TONIGHT from 5pm - 6:30pm at Westfield UTC mall in La Jolla. We'll be focusing on socialization & exposure, brushing up on leash walking skills, and working on proofing recalls in a public place.

WELCOME TO THE HEROICK9S FAMILY, KOA!💛

Meet Koa, a sweet little black with a heart as big as her spirit!

This little lady had a rough start to life, being attacked by a coyote at just 7 weeks old. Now, at 13 weeks, she has fully healed from her wounds and the pins have been removed from her femur - she has the energy to prove it! We'll be working with Koa and her family on everything from puppy basics like crate training & potty training all the way to off-leash training to be safely loose in their large front yard.

BFFL: BEST FRIENDS FOR LIFE ✨

Earlier this year, with the help of , we were able to pull 8-month old Storm (then only known as ) just days before euthanasia at San Jacinto shelter in Riverside County.

After intense training, rehabilitation, and exposure to the outside world, we were able to match Storm with an amazing family all the way in Phoenix, Arizona!

Storm and his new sister Stella are practically inseparable and love to cuddle, wrestle, and explore as a pair. His parents continue to work on his anxiety issues that resulted from lack of proper socialization as a young puppy and he's making great progress.

As much as we aren't a rescue, being involved in saving the lives of shelter dogs is an integral part of what we do. Without the help of donors, pulling, feeding, and providing medical care for Storm would not have been possible!

Through no fault of his own, Bentley was returned by his adopter and is looking for a true FOREVER home! As soon as we found out he was back with his rescue, we jumped on the opportunity to bring him back into our foster program and give him as much consistency as possible.

Sweet Bentley has been working hard on refreshing his obedience and house manners, and is just as playful as ever!

Due to his bouncy and explosive nature, Bentley needs a home with no small animals or children under 12. He is dog friendly but can be a lot, so any potential dog sibling will need to be properly introduced with plenty of time to adapt to each other post-adoption.

LUCKY THE LOVER 💚

Lucky has made IMMENSE amounts of progress since joining us, and with the help of and . Despite his difficult history of neglect, Lucky is a sweetheart who wants nothing but to hang out by your side!

This big boy is looking for his forever in a home with no other loose animals and no kids under 12. He isn't super active but does love his zoomies, so having indoor or outdoor space to explore off-leash would be ideal.

FIREWORKS ARE SCARY 😨

This , think of the dogs!

Every year, thousands of pets in California alone end up displaced and lost in the streets due to the anxiety and flight response that fireworks and other loud noisemakers used during Independence Day celebrations. Not only is this dangerous for the newly lost pets, it also means that thousands more dogs in shelters get euthanized to make space for them!

To ensure your pets are safe this year, here are a few things to make sure you've prepared ahead of time.

1) MAKE SURE YOUR DOG IS LICENSED & MICROCHIPPED. The San Diego Humane Society manages the majority of the pet registry in San Diego County. Check out the website for more information on how to license your dog, or DM us for assistance!

2) TAKE UPDATED PHOTOS OF YOUR DOG. By having recent photos, you can ensure that if they do escape, you'll be able to share their photo and find them sooner.

3) CREATE A SAFE SPACE. Provide a secure crate or room for your dog, especially if you're going to leave them unsupervised! Not only will they feel much safer, they'll also be safe in the event they're fearful enough to flee.

4) PROVIDE NOISE DISTRACTIONS. Once it hits afternoon, turn on the radio or other music source to mask the sound of parties and municipalities hosting fireworks shows!

5) GET YOUR DOG TIRED BEFORE THE BOOM. Go on a leashed walk/run, and play until they're tired. This will produce endorphins and lower natural stress levels. Provide chews and chew toys for a safe alternative to stress behaviors.

6) CONSIDER MEDICATING IF YOUR DOG IS EXTREMELY ANXIOUS. If your dog has existing anxiety, or if they've struggled with fireworks in the past, you may want to use a calming supplement such as CBD oil or even ask your vet for an as-needed anxiety medication. We recommend for last minute vet visits (do this ASAP to receive your prescription in time!).

THE CALM AFTER THE STORM ⛈️

Remember Storm, the we pulled from the kill shelter in San Jacinto?

We've been receiving AMAZING updates and lots of love from his new family - plus, as you can see, him & his new sister are the perfect match!

Now that Storm has found his forever, we still have FOUR foster dogs in desperate need of homes! Without these pups getting adopted, we will be unable to continue intakes for our foster program and therefore be unable to continue saving lives of homeless dogs experiencing behavioral concerns.

DO THE WEIRD THING 🤪

Our dogs, especially working dogs, are required to experience some funky situations - why not prepare them for it?

If your dog can walk over odd textures, go underneath foreign objects, climb onto moving surfaces, and experience stress without shutting down, you've done amazing work!

If your dog isn't so sure about uncomfortable situations, it's not impossible to get there! No matter your dog's age, breed, size, or temperament, confidence & trust building can be the difference between struggle and success.

STUNNING MARLEY 😍

Have you met Marley, one of 's current dogs?

This handsome guy, previously known as Walnut, was relinquished back to the rescue after 3.5 years due to no fault of his own. He has wonderful house manners, is potty trained, and loves to perform for food.

Marley will need to continue professional training for intense prey drive with squirrels and small birds. He can be redirected with treats, however his hound nature makes small animals very valuable! Due to this, Marley wouldn't be fit for a home with a cat or small dog.

WE NEED YOUR HELP! ⚠️

This handsome one-year old mix was found as a stray in Spring Valley, CA by a Good Samaritan. Due to shelters and rescues being full to the brim, and having multiple dogs in the home, their only option is to find a foster or forever home or else relinquish him to the only shelters who would take him - high kill.

We've named this sweet boy Colby, and need at least $600 to cover food, care, and medical for him including a vet check and Rabies vaccine!

Here is what his finder has said about him:

"So I live in Spring Valley on the nature preserve off of Millar Ranch Road and someone either ditched their dog or their dog escaped and we haven't been able to track down an owner for more than 2 weeks. No microchip.

I think he's a Belgian Malinois or possibly a Shepherd mix. He's intact and I'd say a year old or less. He's an absolute sweetheart and listens well. Plays great with our other dogs and my toddler. He seems potty trained but we haven't left him unattended. He's too sweet of a dog to go to a shelter and I don't want him to get euthanized."
