Hearing testing on a Australian Cattle Dog puppy. The BAER test is straightforward and it is not harmful to the puppy. A BAER test (Brainstem auditory evoked response) is capable of telling us if there is hearing in each ear independently. Sometimes there can be deafness in one ear, but not the other one. Without a BAER test to confirm, it is difficult to determine if the dog is unilaterally deaf. People will refer to a dog with one sided deafness a “uni”. Ethical breeders will test all of their reproductive animals prior to mating to verify there is full hearing on the parents. With breeds that are susceptible to congenital deafness there is a need to test all of the puppies also. The test cannot determine the amount of loss if there is some loss of hearing but not complete deafness.
