We know we cannot save them all, but does that mean we shouldn't try?

Once again we find ourselves in a situation where there are numerous Akitas in need in our local Southern California shelters.

We absolutely agree that this situation is very far from ideal and are extremely saddened that our beloved breed has been failed. These are not flawed dogs but there are not enough responsible humans. Tragically the neverending supply has become so overpopulated that other than rescues willing to step up and take responsibility, euthanasia is their only option.

Because many Akitas need to be "only dogs" and do not run in a pack with others, there are very few rescues that have the facilities to keep multiple Akitas.

Well meaning people have suggested that we "send these dogs somewhere else" We are not aware of any Akita Rescues in Canada and we are only aware of 2 other non foster based Akita Rescues in the United States.

These are large/extra large dogs and it isn't easy to just put them on a plane. Ground transport from even Northern California to Southern California costs about the equivalent of 2 months boarding. California is a huge state and gas prices here are the highest in the continental United States.

We also do not believe that it is safe or wise to ship dogs to places that have not been vetted, visited and verified by trusted sources since sadly many of those turn out to be too good to be true.

Plus we all know that it may take Akitas, especially rescue dogs that have been failed by humans in the past, time to adjust and regain trust and that is not easily gained without adequate decompression and evaluation periods. Akitas have the physical capabilities to injure if they are not handled properly and with great power comes great responsibility.

There are over 10 Akitas in the system and we cannot help a single one๐Ÿ˜ฅ๐Ÿ˜ฅ๐Ÿ˜ฅ๐Ÿ˜ฅ

Please help us save at least one or two of them. ๐Ÿคฌ backyard breeders or their uninformed customers dumped these Akitas in various Southern California shelters. Below are several of them and this doesn't even include Akitas within the City of Los Angekes

As you know we are full, our satellite ranch is full and we have others in boarding facilities costing $20-40 per day.

The only way we can keep saving lives is with either sponsorship or fostering. Many people don't have the physical space or resources to bring home a(nother) big furry dog, so here is how you can be a hero from the comfort of your own couch!

We NEED to raise $1,600 - $3,000 per dog to cover two months of boarding fees. On average dogs stay with us for 6 months before they get adopted.

We absolutely desperately NEED HELP. These Akitas NEED YOU! The only way for them to leave thru the shelter's front door alive and hopeful is with your generous support. Don't allow them to be discarded in trash bags and barrels like too many other innocent souls, and if that disturbs you or makes you sad, thank you for still having compassion!

โ€œDogs, lives are short, too short, but you know that going in. You know the pain is coming, you're going to lose a dog, and there's going to be great anguish, so you live fully in the moment with her, never fail to share her joy or delight in her innocence, because you can't support the illusion that a dog can be your lifelong companion. There's such beauty in the hard honesty of that, in accepting and giving love while always aware that it comes with an unbearable price. Maybe loving dogs is a way we do penance for all the other illusions we allow ourselves and the mistakes we make because of those illusions.โ€

A truly tragic and horrific case to read.
A seven month old baby girl killed by the family pet in a hideous incident in their home.
The little one leant on to the dog as she was toddling and was bitten on the neck and very sadly died. A stark reminder of how fast dogs can turn, How quickly something can escalate and how fatal one bite can be.

A dog will correct other dogโ€™s behaviour with a snap or bite and in an agitated state of mind will lash out before investigating the situation. The Malinois was fixated on a bag when the baby touched him, both parents were in the vicinity and present when the dog bit.

Owners who have asked for advice with young babies around dogs know I am incredibly strict and have a 0 tolerance for babies/toddlers/young children being next to, touching, climbing on, leaning on, sitting with or โ€œpettingโ€ a dog and this is the worst case example of exactly why I am so adamant about it!
Dogs shouldnโ€™t have any access to young children who are crawling for exactly this reason! Itโ€™s so fast!! And in this case the dog had been seen by behaviourists for โ€œdominatingโ€ behaviour in the months before the incident.
I would have absolutely tied the owner down to ensuring the dog and baby were never in the room together whether or not the parents were present for exactly this reason so maybe some owners out there who think Iโ€™ve been too harsh with rules around babies will understand why now!!
โ€œOh we never leave them alone togetherโ€ is absolutely NOT good enough!!!! The parents were right next to the dog and baby!! Please remember this!!

Everyone thinks being a dog behaviourist is a dream job working with dogs but I have to deal with child bites and injuries every week and itโ€™s always upsetting and highly emotional!! The only way to deal with this is to PREVENT!
And if you need to hear it hereโ€™s your reminder!
Dogs are NOT a furbaby
Dogs are NOT thrilled for the arrival of your baby
Dogs are NOT protecting your baby
Dogs are NOT โ€œkissingโ€ your child
Dogs are an ANIMAL
Dogs are an apex predator in your home!

Please no hate or comments about the parents in this case they have suffered enough and I hope this post may just save another child from injury!
