We know we cannot save them all, but does that mean we shouldn't try?
Once again we find ourselves in a situation where there are numerous Akitas in need in our local Southern California shelters.
We absolutely agree that this situation is very far from ideal and are extremely saddened that our beloved breed has been failed. These are not flawed dogs but there are not enough responsible humans. Tragically the neverending supply has become so overpopulated that other than rescues willing to step up and take responsibility, euthanasia is their only option.
Because many Akitas need to be "only dogs" and do not run in a pack with others, there are very few rescues that have the facilities to keep multiple Akitas.
Well meaning people have suggested that we "send these dogs somewhere else" We are not aware of any Akita Rescues in Canada and we are only aware of 2 other non foster based Akita Rescues in the United States.
These are large/extra large dogs and it isn't easy to just put them on a plane. Ground transport from even Northern California to Southern California costs about the equivalent of 2 months boarding. California is a huge state and gas prices here are the highest in the continental United States.
We also do not believe that it is safe or wise to ship dogs to places that have not been vetted, visited and verified by trusted sources since sadly many of those turn out to be too good to be true.
Plus we all know that it may take Akitas, especially rescue dogs that have been failed by humans in the past, time to adjust and regain trust and that is not easily gained without adequate decompression and evaluation periods. Akitas have the physical capabilities to injure if they are not handled properly and with great power comes great responsibility.

There are over 10 Akitas in the system and we cannot help a single one๐ฅ๐ฅ๐ฅ๐ฅ
Please help us save at least one or two of them. ๐คฌ backyard breeders or their uninformed customers dumped these Akitas in various Southern California shelters. Below are several of them and this doesn't even include Akitas within the City of Los Angekes
As you know we are full, our satellite ranch is full and we have others in boarding facilities costing $20-40 per day.
The only way we can keep saving lives is with either sponsorship or fostering. Many people don't have the physical space or resources to bring home a(nother) big furry dog, so here is how you can be a hero from the comfort of your own couch!
We NEED to raise $1,600 - $3,000 per dog to cover two months of boarding fees. On average dogs stay with us for 6 months before they get adopted.
We absolutely desperately NEED HELP. These Akitas NEED YOU! The only way for them to leave thru the shelter's front door alive and hopeful is with your generous support. Don't allow them to be discarded in trash bags and barrels like too many other innocent souls, and if that disturbs you or makes you sad, thank you for still having compassion!
