This was a major transformation. This little guy was matted from head to toe. Some deep conditioning, detangling spray and thinning and voilà, he’s a soft teddy bear again. 🧸 I can certainly get it done with the right amount of time and patience. If you choose not to shave your dog down, which would be easier on the dog and your wallet, expect to pay 💰. This transformation was $200. Keeping in mind that factors out to $66 an hour (times 3 hours)which is still a deal. A dog of this size and haircut typically goes from $65-$85 in this area. He was literally matted to the skin. The entire process took me 3 hours. Taking care not to hurt him, I was able to get the job done.

I love when clients take my recommendations to heart when explaining how to properly care for fully coated doodles at home. Using the proper tools and proper collars on coated breeds is key to remaining tangle free. Here are some great products that I recommend: First is the double wide red mat zapper brush from Les Poochs. This brush, although pricey, will last you a lifetime. Beware of knock off replicas. They don’t work the same. It will “zap” through the mats safely and efficiently. I then follow up with the Chris Christiansen Buttercomb. It’s called a Buttercomb because as you slide it through your pets’ coats after brushing to see if you’ve missed any tangles, it literally glides through the coat like butter. It’s different than other combs on the market. It has a smooth finish that allows this. And then last but not least, I recommend all of my clients that have fully coated breeds to use a rolled leather collar instead of traditional flat collars. This will save the coat from getting matted around the neck (a common problem area) that is sensitive when dematting. They aren’t as “pretty” as the options out there as with the traditional collars but you can jazz them up with bow ties that you can purchase separately.

Upon further investigation, via the internet, and from a certified essential oil specialist (Anne Mie Boddin) it has come to my attention that using essential oils around animals is not safe at ALL. Some websites state that if you MUST use essential oil diffusers, do so in a room where the pet can’t get into. They are toxic to both dogs and cats. There are some lists that state certain oils are okay (in moderation) but with the animal out of the room.

I’m going to change to my new idea of using a crock pot instead with certain actual fruits and herbs that aren’t toxic, as a way to make a fragrant room. I’ll keep you all posted. And thank you Anne for your insider knowledge. And bringing this to light. Since there is so much misinformation on the World Wide Web.

As a groomer, I’m tired of pussyfooting around this issue. Breeders of these doodles need to step up and EDUCATE their buyers. Period. Because the only ones who suffer are the pups. #1) They are matted and it takes a LOT OF WORK to demat a dog. A LOT of elbow grease and sweat. And most of us develop carpel tunnel in our hands for this very reason after years of doing so. #2) Groomers don’t want them as repeat clients. I can PROMISE you that. I have a soft heart and usually look the other way and handle the situation accordingly. But I am no longer taking in new clients. My current clients get it and understand the assignment.

If you are going to welcome a curly coated dog into your home, please educate yourself about the REALISTIC daily proper maintenance that goes into having one of these dogs. Expecting your groomer to perform a miracle EVERYTIME is just not fair to the puppy nor the groomer. It takes a lot of patience on your pooch’s part to sit there for several hours and be dematted, safely and properly.
If brushing isn’t something you think you can do, do what a few of my clients do and have them come in weekly for a bath and a blow out for maintenance.

I know it’s “taboo” to speak out on things when it comes to grooming but I’m in this career because I enjoy it. Not because I’m a slave to it. Once you start asking me time and time again to demat a fully coated dog, then it becomes neglect on your part as an owner and you shouldn’t have a dog. Also, it’s abuse of your groomer’s generosity. And makes me a slave. Which I won’t have. I’ve culled my list in the last 6 months.

I’ve been doing this for 22 years now. Too long to entertain someone’s sensitive feelings. You don’t want to brush your dog? Don’t get a dog. Get a goldfish instead. This is the last time I’m going to speak on this.

I said what I said.

Dematting will start at $200
In the words of Viola Davis “Pay me what I’m worth” I know my worth. Do you?
