One of the lesser known Misty books is titled "Misty the Wonder Pony". It's a small picture book for young children published in 1956. A second edition was published in 1961; likely because the Misty movie came out that year. It's fairly easy to find a copy as there's usually one to be found on eBay or Amazon.

The two editions have two different covers, both pictured here. Misty on a stool is from 1956 and the yellow one is from 1961. There's also some merchandise that was produced for the book. But that deserves its own post.

The story is an interesting mix of the fictionalized story of Misty being born on Assateague and saved at the swim. And the story of the real Misty being bought by Marguerite Henry and living in Wayne, Illinois. The story is told by Misty herself in first person (or first pony?). No other author is listed but Marguerite Henry ghost wrote for Misty.

It was illustrated by Clare McKinley and has really lovely and adorable illustrations. Several inspired by real photos. Wesley Dennis drew from real life inspiration so it's cool to see that McKinley continued that even though it's a very different style.

It's a great addition to any Misty library!

This is for everyone who is confused about horse weight, this is not to shame you or your horse. These pictures are only to educate you in a way that would be best understood on what a healthy horse should look like. There are a lot of people, and even some veterinary professionals, that would say the last picture represents a healthy horse, but it does not. Today, because there are so many overweight horses, it is hard to recognize when your horse is unhealthy but I hope this picture is able to give you some perspective.

📣The rumor mill 📣
Yes we sold our farm and no I’m not retiring!
After a huge amount of soul searching and deliberation, not to mention some sleepless nights, Cait and I have made a life changing decision. Due to family responsibilities that have arisen, we are moving up to Northern California to be close to Cait’s mother. Obviously, the choice we’ve arrived at is fraught with a kaleidoscope of emotions. We have built a life and family here in San Marcos with over two decades of cherished memories. Our Workshops have been some of the highlights of our life here. We have invited riders, their horses, their families and friends to share special moments of learning, growth and fun with us at our home. Letting go of this now treasured part of our annual schedule is not an easy task and letting go of the lifestyle we’ve inhabited for many years is difficult as well. We designed and built our little farm from the ground up and have been blessed to call this sliver of paradise “home” day after day. This strip of dirt has essentially become another child to us! It is bitter sweet to have sold this farm and say goodbye to this chapter.

“What does this mean for me?” You may be asking this and are justified in doing so. I will continue with my extensive clinic schedule around the country, most likely to include a venue close to you. Additionally, I will continue to team up with facilities in various parts of the country that are interested to host my workshops, such as my annual East Coast Workshop at Hay Fever Farm in Robinsville, N.J. Information on those can be found on the EquestrianCoach.com clinic and workshop page. By no means does this relocation indicate my retirement. I love to teach and will proudly continue to give back to the sport that has given me so much.

Another chapter begins! - Bernie
