Meet Mallo, a curious and smart bunny with a heart of gold! Despite having his right leg amputated in November 2024 due to an infection from a broken foot and ankle, Mallo is learning to adapt beautifully to his new way of life. Because he is a tripod, he will need regular help keeping his ears and hind end clean. He’s currently being cared for by a wonderful foster, who is helping him heal and regain his playful spirit post-op. Mallo loves exploring, playing with willow chew toys, and relaxing on timothy hay mats. He’s great with his litter box and enjoys supervised playtime. Though a bit shy at first, he warms up quickly and loves gentle pets-though he’d rather not be picked up. His gentle curiosity makes him a great fit for a home with calm, patient kids. Mallo does display some territorial behaviors from time to time, including grunting, grumbling, or moving his ears back and tensing up when he’s upset. Rescued with other young rabbits from another shelter, Mallo is ready to find his forever family!
Mallo arrived with suspected bite wounds on both of his ears that resulted in aural hematomas (swelling of the ears). The right one healed and scarred up on its own but the left required surgical correction. He has recovered well but it has left him with narrower ear canals that could make him more prone to ear infections down the line. His doctors also hope that the scar tissue will reduce over time and allow his ear canals to return to normal. With a little monitoring of his ears, he should go on to live a happy life, just like any other rabbit.#adoptdontshop #bunny #animalshelters #rescue #amputee #donate #fosteranimals

Despite her age, she bounced back immediately, adjusting beautifully to her new normal thanks to her loving foster family. 💕 Her foster mom says, ‘She’s back to her old self and no longer miserable from her irritated eye.’ Darla is thriving! 🐰💖

Sparkle needed to go to the vet yesterday because of a possible dental abscess. Our vet found a few teeth that needed extraction. We are still trying to figure out why she is not eating as much as she should. Her recovery from the teeth extraction has been slow so she stayed the night at the vet clinic. Sparkle was the more compromised of the two and her condition is still guarded. #neglect #care #vetlife #vetmedicine #donate #fundraise
In this update, we want to share how Sparkle is doing after the tragic loss of her beloved partner, Pumpkin. Both Sparkle and Pumpkin recently returned to us in horrific condition, suffering from overwhelming neglect. Despite our best efforts, we lost Pumpkin a few nights ago. He passed away during the night at home, with Sparkle by his side.
Sparkle, who is mostly blind and likely deaf, relied heavily on Pumpkin for comfort and guidance, making his loss even harder for her. Her foster mom reports that Sparkle has been clinging to her side since his passing, seeking the love and security she needs.
Sparkle is holding on and showing resilience, but she still faces significant challenges. She’s scheduled to see the vet on Tuesday for a possible dental abscess, which may also be causing some eye discharge on the same side. Her appetite has been good, though she struggles to eat certain foods, so her foster mom has been offering plenty of Critical Care along with her regular meals. Thankfully, Sparkle eats it right off a plate, and we’re hopeful she can start putting on some much-needed weight.
Despite everything she’s been through, Sparkle is incredibly sweet and loves getting pets. Though she doesn’t move around much due to her disabilities, she can navigate her surroundings just fine.
Thank you for your continued support during this difficult time. Your kindness and generosity make it possible for us to provide Sparkle with the care, comfort, and love she so deeply deserves.
An update on Pumpkin. We apologize, the last post got cut off. #pumpkin #neglect #rabbitsofinstagram #donate #adoptdontshop #sandiegorabbits #fyp
Check out little Pumpkin getting his critical care. He is not out of the woods yet. He is not eating a ton on his own and his gut is making some horrible sounds so our vet is proposing doing a fecal transplant which could be up to $400-$500. He is at the vet waiting for his treatment and our approval to fund the treatment. Our vet bills are high and we are in debt with them. Is there anyone who would be open to sponsoring Pumpkin’s care for us so we can make sure he gets the attention he needs immediately? If you can sponsor him, please email us at [email protected] asap. We desperately need the community’s help with Pumpkin and Sparkle. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts.#donate #fundraise #medicalbills #rabbitsofinstagram

Update on Pumpkin: he had to stay overnight at @avianexotics_pesc in an oxygen tank because her is not breathing well. Dr. Cecil also heard a strange heart murmur or valve issue. This could mean heart disease, but we can’t address that until we can manage the other issues that are going on. @avianexotics_pesc drew blood and took x-rays as well. The blood tests came back with an extremely low white blood cell count which means his body is not fighting off any infections and his X-rays showed congestion in the left lung. So right now, we are either seeing an immune mediated condition or an infection. So to cover both bases, Pumpkin will be treated with antibiotics and steroids. He was slowly weaned off of the oxygen and sent home with his foster mom to be reunited with Sparkle. Both rabbits are still in guarded condition and fighting for their lives.❤️ This is super heartbreaking to witness. If you want to hear Pumpkin and Sparkle’s full story, we have pinned it to our reels. #neglect #sandiegorabbits #fundraise #donate #rabbits
This is little Sparkle in her foster home receiving the love that she needs while her bonded mate Pumpkin is still at @avianexotics_pesc fighting for his life. We think she has developed an abscess in the left side of her mouth so we will be calling our vet to see what our next steps with her are. Pumpkin and Sparkle are only 2 out of the many the medical bunnies we are treating at #sandiegorabbits. We need all the help with monetary and in-kind donations that we can get. To see how to make a donation, please use the wishlist links or donate button in our bio. Our vet bills are in the tens of thousands right now. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts. #medicalbills #adoptdontshop🐾 #rabbits #donate #fundraising #fyp
Please send positive thoughts to Pumpkin. We checked him out today and he does not look good. His nose and gums were turning purple and white and he is open mouth breathing. We are racing him to @avianexotics_pesc right now. #medical #rabbit #adoptdontshop #shelteranimals
