Peek-a-boo! 😜
To teach Peek-a-boo start with your dog facing toward you. Then lure with a treat around the outside of your leg and between your legs. Give the treat and dismiss! Once your pup has that mastered, see if they can do it with a only a hand lure, then without a lure at all! Don’t forget to show off to all your friends ⭐️
This trick is a great trust builder, since it can be a little intimidating for some pups to walk under your legs. So make sure you go slow and give plenty of treats!

What is the best leash walking tool?
That’s a trick question 😉 There is no miracle tool that will make your pup walk perfectly on a leash. The right tool can certainly help, but if you don’t have a solid training foundation, changing tools won’t solve the problem.
Technique is always more important than the tool! Make sure to focus on:
⭐️ Consistency- practice short sessions every day
⭐️Positive reinforcement- treats, treats, treats to teach your dog to stick by your side
⭐️Start small- practice in low distraction areas, like the living room or backyard, first!

Evert Prep School student’s favorite word- 𝐃𝐈𝐒𝐌𝐈𝐒𝐒𝐄𝐃!
All commands must have a start and end. A dismissal, or release word, is the end of the command. The dismissal helps our students build duration with each of their commands and overall impulse control.
Some tips for incorporating a release word:
➝ If your dog gets up before the dismissal, you probably waited too long!
➝ Do not treat for a dismissal- it’s not a command. But if your pup isn’t quite getting it you can casually walk away and they will likely follow you 😉
➝ You can use any word you like! We use “dismissed” because it’s hard for your dog to mistake it for any other word.

Once your dog learns “Wait”, you will use this one constantly! “Wait” means your dog stops in their tracks until released. It’s different from a “Stay” because the dog is usually in motion when you ask for a “Wait”, and it’s not meant to be held for a long period of time like “Stay”, just a few seconds. ✋🏼
Some ways you can use “Wait”:
🐶 “Wait” before walking out the front door
🐶 ”Wait” before jumping out of your car
🐶 “Wait” while off leash if your dog is going towards something they shouldn’t - like a street
To teach “Wait”, leash yo your pup, as you’re walking in a heel, ask for a “Wait”. Immediately mark with a “Yes!” and reward for any pause in movement.

✨The Golden Rules of Recall✨
The COME command is one of the most challenging and time consuming commands to teach. A solid recall can take months, if not years, to perfect. So have patience with yourself and your pup! 🐶
Rule 1: 𝐏𝐑𝐀𝐈𝐒𝐄 𝐈𝐓 - Make yourself the most interesting thing in the world to your dog. Give lots of praise and rewards for coming towards you. Coming to you should always be a positive reinforcement for your dog - even if they just chewed up your favorite shoes 😆
Rule 2: 𝐌𝐄𝐀𝐍 𝐈𝐓 - Don’t even THINK about uttering the word “Come” if you’re not willing to enforce it. The word has to mean something to your dog, so if you day it and they don’t obey, you have to be able to physically make them come to you, whether that’s by using a treat lure or leashing them up and guiding them. If you’re in an environment where that’s not possible - they aren’t ready to be off leash. You can also practice informal recalls like Touch!
Rule 3: 𝐁𝐔𝐈𝐋𝐃 𝐈𝐓 - Recall is hard! So start small and build it up. If your dog doesn’t come to you 100% of the time inside your house, how will they succeed off leash in a park? Set your pup up for success by practicing in low distraction environments and working your way up slowly and steadily once they have mastered various types of distractions.

When you give your dog a command, does your dog know exactly what they are supposed to do? How do they know? How did they make the connection between command and behavior? 🤔
At school, we use the word “Yes!” to communicate the precise moment when the desired behavior occurs. For example - if the goal of a “Down” command is elbows and belly touching the floor, will mark the precise moment when the elbows touch the ground with a “Yes!” then immediately follow with a treat. Our dogs will make the connection that correct behavior = yes! = treats!
Try incorporating this powerful communication tool into your training vocabulary!

Touch!
Touch is one of our favorites because it encourages your dog to come closer to you! It can be used as a pre-cursor to the “Come” command.
To teach your pup Touch… hold a treat in a closed fist, ask for “Touch” and when your dog’s nose touches your fist, say “Yes!” and open your hand to give the treat 😋🦴

How to teach Sit Pretty 🤩
1. Ask your pup for a sit
2. Hold a treat close to their nose and lure upward
3. When their front paws pop off the ground (even just an inch), mark “yes!” and give the treat
The booty needs to stay on the ground! So if your pup stands all the way up, start over and go slower!

“Sit” is the foundation for all basic obedience. Is this the first command you taught your pup?
Here at Prep School, “Sit” is usually one of the first commands we teach because it’s a simple movement to understand. When a dog masters “Sit”, they are also learning...
- To give you their attention
- That “Yes!” marker = treats
- To hold a command until dismissed
- Impulse control
To teach a sit, use a treat to lure the nose upward until the dog is in a sit. When the booty touches the floor, say “Yes!” and give a treat 🦴 Then “Dismiss” right away!
