A friend caught me sitting down on the job. In my defense, I was harvesting potatoes. My first crop did great. I have planted 2 more rows for a fall harvest.

Friends, my potatoes will be available this Saturday between 10:00 and 2:00 pm at the Pixca Farm stand. The farm stand is on the corner of Sunset and Hollister. These are freshly harvested and are some of the best potatoes I have ever grown. Tender and very tasty.

Today I harvested my first row of potatoes for 2024. Seed source is San Diego seed Company. Potato varieties are Yukon Gem, Red Pontiac and Purple Viking. This haul weighed over a hundred pounds including the few pounds we already ate. I am very pleased with this harvest!

Update on the trench method of tomato planting method. I filled the trench with the rest of the soil and then spread compost on to to act as a mulch while it completes the composting process.

2024 First test harvest on my potatoes. Planted April 5th, 2024. Seed potatoes source San Diego Seed Company. I noticed that the plants were starting to turn yellow and fall over into the path. Then I saw a potato peeking out of the soil so decided to investigate. These are from one chited potato, although three or four plants grew from each seed potato. I have 3 fifty foot rows of potatoes. Hopefully I'll have plenty to harvest and sell this year.

I am utilizing the trench method to plant tomato seedlings today. I till and trench the soil, establish the trellis, and lay out the drip irrigation tube. By trimming the lower branches and any small tomatoes or flowers, I can encourage the plants to focus on foliage growth rather than fruit production. I will lay the seedlings horizontally in the trench and cover the root ball with soil, allowing the stems to bend up towards the sun in the next few days. This method enhances the amount of stem in the soil, resulting in more roots and a stronger plant.

My potatoes have been thriving, and I couldn't be happier with their progress. They are looking healthy and strong, and I am excited to see them continue to grow. Thanks San Diego Seed Company for the potato starts.

Looks like the water was about 3 to 4 feet deep in my Farmette yesterday. Worst flood I have experienced in the last 7 years.

Another major flood in the Tijuana River Valley Community Garden. This is the worst one i have experienced since the early 1990s. They were evacuating livestock from the lower lying areas of the valley around 4:30 this afternoon.

I got my first frost of the 2023/2024 winter last night. My volunteer bush beans finally got frostbite and the temperature gage measured 32.5 degrees. It's a little later than normal, but not by much.

I have been worried about the El Nino weather forecasted for this year. The floods on Martin Luther King day hit me hard. This year with the help of friends I am in a much better position to withstand potential flood conditions. My permiter berms were reinforced with three large dump trucks of fill dirt.

What happens when you plant tomatoes horizontally in a trench?
In these three photos are the results of planting long leggy tomatoes in a horizontal trench. I grew these tomatoes from seed and had transplanted them from the seedling flats to 4 inch pots. I got behind in my bed preparation so they got pretty leggy in my greenhouse. They were 12 to 14 inches tall. I laid my irrigation hose and dug a trench about 6 inches deep. I stripped off the bottom leaves, laid the plants in the trench and covered the root ball and about 10 inches of the stem. As you can see, I had good root development at the root ball and along the entire buried stem particularly where the stem emerged from the soil. Much better root development than if I had just planted the tomatoes at normal depth.

To all who expressed concern for us during the Tropical Storm Hilary event. We are doing well. There was no flooding at the Farmette which is what I was concerned about. There was a little wind damage, Primarily corn and other tall unsupported crops. However none of this affected me. I measured 1.8 inches at the farmette. Not a record amount for us, but close to it. Thanks for all of your well wishes and support!!!

Some of today's harvest. Tomato variety is Mountain Magic. It is a 2 bite cherry tomato or a saladette. Very productive but takes awhile to get ripe. Once they start, it is on like Donkey Kong.
