As the Border 2 Fire continues to burn in the Otay Wilderness Area, it's crucial to have an emergency plan for your family — including pets of all sizes. Create an emergency kit for your pets, including food, medication, water, bedding, toys and any other items to make them feel secure. Have their kennels or carriers ready to go, if needed. Make sure your pets are wearing identification, including a collar with ID tag, even if your pet doesn't normally go outdoors. If your pet has a microchip, make sure your registered contact information is up to date. If there is a fire, evacuate early and don't leave your pets behind. Make a plan now for any large animals and livestock. Pets cannot fend for themselves during disasters and leaving them behind can risk both their lives and those of rescuers.

This evening, our team returned to San Diego with four more dogs from Pasadena Humane Society, continuing our commitment to helping animals and communities impacted by the Eaton Fire. Over the past few weeks, we’ve partnered closely with Pasadena Humane, transferring a total of 47 adoptable pets into our care to help create space for animals displaced by the fires.

In addition to these lifesaving transfers, our Emergency Response Team spent eight days on the front lines, responding to a total of 123 calls to help evacuate and care for 55 animals in need. We have also deployed staff veterinarians to Pasadena Humane to help treat and care for sick and injured animals.

We can only do this work with your help. By donating at sdhumane.org/response, you’ll ensure we’re always ready to respond when animals and their families need us most.

Thank you The Dogist for featuring another one of our pets who found their perfect match! 💙

This 3-year-old peregrine falcon arrived at our Pilar & Chuck Bahde Wildlife Center unable to fly. X-rays revealed a fresh fracture to his right wing, and we determined he would need surgery to be eligible for release. The very next day, our wildlife veterinary team placed hardware on both the inside and outside of his wing to keep the fracture as stable as possible.

Over the next 30 days, our team provided the falcon with specialized care, including physical therapy and massage under anesthesia every three days to aid the healing process — and their efforts worked! He was finally ready to have the hardware removed and begin the next phase of his rehabilitation.

Since peregrine falcons have such complex flight mechanics, he had to undergo special flight conditioning to strengthen his muscles. Our rehabilitation specialists attached cuffs to his ankles that connected him to a long leash, which allowed him to fly outside of a cage setting. This was the first time our team used this method for an animal in our care, and it was incredibly successful! After 67 days, the peregrine falcon was healthy and ready to return to the wild.

When emergencies strike, we're here to help — and today, we’re asking for your support to continue our lifesaving work. This morning, our Emergency Response Team (ERT) was on the front lines of the Lilac Fire in San Diego County, working alongside San Diego County Department of Animal Services to evacuate and care for animals in harm's way.

At the same time, our dedicated ERT is standing by, awaiting their next deployment to continue supporting wildfire relief efforts in Los Angeles. So far, they have provided 8 days of emergency response to support those impacted by the Eaton Fires. These highly skilled and wildfire-certified team members are able to access active fire zones and rescue animals in need.

Additionally, we have mobilized teams to provide hands-on support to our partners at Pasadena Humane, who have been working tirelessly to shelter and care for animals impacted by the fires. With help from our community, we have been able to:

🤍 Transfer 43 adoptable pets to our shelters to make room for animals displaced by the fires, with an additional transport in process.
🤍Deploy staff veterinarians to Pasadena Humane to help their team treat and care for sick and injured animals.
🤍Provide on-site administrative support, helping with urgently needed data entry and donation processing.

Your support is the reason we can respond to emergencies at a moment’s notice. And it’s the reason we can provide animals with lifesaving medical care, behavioral support, safe shelter and so much more. This work takes considerable resources, and we can’t do it without you. Your gift at sdhumane.org/response will ensure we’re always ready to rescue animals in danger, reunite families with their beloved pets and offer hope when it’s needed most. Please give now to help us continue this lifesaving work. Together, we can be the safety net that animals and their families count on in times of crisis.

Is your home missing a little something? Perhaps an adorable, fluffy companion with a fantastic purr-sonality? Well, you’ve scrolled to the right place! Meet Oliver — a sweet boy available on our partner rehoming site, Home To Home. Oliver’s family had to make the tough decision to find him a new home, and they’re on the lookout for a purrfect new family. Here’s what they had to say about this dashing gentleman:

"Oliver is a healthy 12-year-old boy who's in great shape — we joke that he is a vampire and will live forever! He's incredibly loving, enjoys sunbathing and cuddling and making biscuits. He's used to dogs but hasn't been around children much, so we think he would do best in an adult-only home. He's also very talkative and will tell you it's mealtime every day — food is one of his favorite things ever. He's never had an accident, he knows how to use the potty box very well and he's just a cool cat. I just want to find him someone who will love him!"

If Oliver sounds like a perfect match for you, check out his profile here bit.ly/3E5i8Fe and other pets being rehomed in our community at sdhumane.org/newhome!

We believe in love at FURst sight, because how could we deny it when we see sweet Pippa in her new home?! Pippa's adopter, Robin, shares how the adorable kitty won over their hearts almost immediately in this evening's :

"Pippa has settled in beautifully and is quite the contented kitty. She has her own space with a kitty condo, food, water and toys. She also travels very well in our truck, which is a good thing since she will be traveling with us 4 to 5 months a year as she accompanies us on our adventures in our travel trailer (her first trip will be up the coast to Vancouver Island this Spring). She is quite loved as you can see by the photos. She's everything we wanted in a fur baby...smart, sociable, sweet and trainable. She was introduced to 5 friends who came over to meet and greet her. She engaged, much to my delight! I credit her ease with new people and the accompanying attention to all of the wonderful people who handled her, cared for her and loved her in the weeks she was in your care. She continues to win over our hearts each and every day. If not for the dedicated people of San Diego Humane Society, we would not have had this wonderful creature grace our lives. For that, we are forever in your debt. It will be a holiday tradition to make a donation every Dec. 13 (adoption day) on behalf of Pippa Boren, our very favorite Christmas present of 2024. Thank you for your service to all animals, humans included 🥰."

Cheers to Pippa, Robin and the whole family!

In the wake of the devastating fires in Los Angeles, Greater Good Charities is working to provide relief by transporting more than 48 adoptable pets from San Diego Humane Society and other shelters to the Pacific Northwest. This lifesaving mission is part of the global nonprofit’s commitment to supporting communities and animals in times of crisis.

Relocating these pets allows us to create much-needed space, so that we're ready to take in additional pets from overwhelmed shelters in the Los Angeles area. This allows those shelters to focus their efforts on caring for the animals directly affected by the wildfires until they can reunite with their families.

When the flight lands in Northern California and Oregon, the shelter pets will be quickly transported to receiving shelters. There, they’ll be evaluated, provided with any necessary medical care and prepared to find loving new homes. Our heartfelt thanks go to the receiving shelters — Oregon Humane Society, East Bay SPCA, Marin Humane, Humane Society of Sonoma County, and Pets In Need — for giving these pets a second chance to thrive. Together, we’re making a difference for animals and the communities who love them. Thank you for your partnership in saving lives!
