This evening, our team returned to San Diego with four more dogs from Pasadena Humane Society, continuing our commitment to helping animals and communities impacted by the Eaton Fire. Over the past few weeks, we’ve partnered closely with Pasadena Humane, transferring a total of 47 adoptable pets into our care to help create space for animals displaced by the fires.
In addition to these lifesaving transfers, our Emergency Response Team spent eight days on the front lines, responding to a total of 123 calls to help evacuate and care for 55 animals in need. We have also deployed staff veterinarians to Pasadena Humane to help treat and care for sick and injured animals.
We can only do this work with your help. By donating at sdhumane.org/response, you’ll ensure we’re always ready to respond when animals and their families need us most.

This 3-year-old peregrine falcon arrived at our Pilar & Chuck Bahde Wildlife Center unable to fly. X-rays revealed a fresh fracture to his right wing, and we determined he would need surgery to be eligible for release. The very next day, our wildlife veterinary team placed hardware on both the inside and outside of his wing to keep the fracture as stable as possible.
Over the next 30 days, our team provided the falcon with specialized care, including physical therapy and massage under anesthesia every three days to aid the healing process — and their efforts worked! He was finally ready to have the hardware removed and begin the next phase of his rehabilitation.
Since peregrine falcons have such complex flight mechanics, he had to undergo special flight conditioning to strengthen his muscles. Our rehabilitation specialists attached cuffs to his ankles that connected him to a long leash, which allowed him to fly outside of a cage setting. This was the first time our team used this method for an animal in our care, and it was incredibly successful! After 67 days, the peregrine falcon was healthy and ready to return to the wild.

A big thank you to our friends NBC 7 San Diego for having us and Mia! As a reminder, adoption fees for all adult cats and dogs (7 months and older) are just $25 through Jan. 26 thanks to BISSELL Pet Foundation!
In the wake of the devastating fires in Los Angeles, Greater Good Charities is working to provide relief by transporting more than 48 adoptable pets from San Diego Humane Society and other shelters to the Pacific Northwest. This lifesaving mission is part of the global nonprofit’s commitment to supporting communities and animals in times of crisis.
Relocating these pets allows us to create much-needed space, so that we're ready to take in additional pets from overwhelmed shelters in the Los Angeles area. This allows those shelters to focus their efforts on caring for the animals directly affected by the wildfires until they can reunite with their families.
When the flight lands in Northern California and Oregon, the shelter pets will be quickly transported to receiving shelters. There, they’ll be evaluated, provided with any necessary medical care and prepared to find loving new homes. Our heartfelt thanks go to the receiving shelters — Oregon Humane Society, East Bay SPCA, Marin Humane, Humane Society of Sonoma County, and Pets In Need — for giving these pets a second chance to thrive. Together, we’re making a difference for animals and the communities who love them. Thank you for your partnership in saving lives!
We won’t stop talking about Makana and Halia until this dynamic duo finally goes home! You’ve heard the phrase "two is better than one" — well, it might as well have been written about these two charming girls. Makana and Halia are looking for a home where they can stay together, and trust us, adopting them both means double the fun and love! They’re each other’s built-in playmate, keeping one another entertained until it’s time to wind down. After a day of play, they’ll happily curl up on the couch for a cozy movie night with you. Did we mention they’re both potty trained and have fantastic house manners?
If you’re searching for a duo that will fill your life with laughter, joy and cuddles, Makana (913689) and Halia (913690) are the perfect pair. Visit our Oceanside Campus today and bring these sweethearts home!
Our Emergency Response Team (ERT) was deployed on Friday to assist Pasadena Humane in their efforts to support animals impacted by the devastating fires. Together, along with other animal welfare organizations who are on-site to help, they’ve been working tirelessly to canvass affected areas, rescue animals unable to evacuate with their families and provide food and care to pets in need.
On Sunday, our ERT responded to 37 calls, including a welfare check for two cats, Sage and Pippa, separated from their family during the evacuation. We’re happy to share that these beloved cats have been safely reunited with their family! The team also rescued koi fish and ensured that approximately 75 pigeons at an evacuated property received food and water. They will continue to work on the front lines to care for and support animals affected by these fires.
Today, our shelter staff traveled back up to Pasadena Humane to bring back 28 dogs and 1 kitten to help them free up shelter space as they respond to an influx of animals displaced by the devastating #EatonFire. This follows the 11 dogs our staff transported to our Oceanside Campus just yesterday evening. All the pets transported were already available for adoption in Pasadena and will soon be ready to find loving homes through San Diego Humane Society! If you'd like to help, please consider adopting or fostering a shelter pet. You can view available animals at sdhumane.org/pets or sign up to foster at sdhumane.org/foster. Thank you for helping us care for animals in need during this critical time!

Cindy Lou Who’s Transformation
Here's wishing you a new year filled with hope and new beginnings. A new beginning is exactly what Cindy Lou Who now has, after coming to us as a stray with painfully matted fur. She needed help to feel better and to find hope for a brighter future. Now, this once homeless and neglected dog is happy, healthy and surrounded by love and comfort in her new home.
Today we're celebrating an incredible change in California Law to protect native wildlife! As of Jan. 1, 2025, the Poison Free Wildlife Act (AB 2552) is in effect. This important act expands prohibitions around the use of rodenticides, adding more harmful chemicals to the list of prohibited substances and eliminating loopholes around existing exemptions. This bill will have a profound impact on the future wild animals — like this beautiful bobcat we cared for.
A juvenile bobcat was brought to our Ramona Wildlife Center last August after she was found emaciated and suffering from a severe case of mange. Our wildlife experts determined that she likely became ill after ingesting another animal who was exposed to poisons used in rodenticides. After 105 days of treatment and care, the young bobcat was healthy enough to return to her wild home! However, many wild animals who ingest rodenticides are not as fortunate.
It’s common for Californians to use rodenticides to reduce the numbers of unwanted pests on their properties. However, many of these substances also harm countless animals each year. When hawks, coyotes, owls and other wild species — or even family pets — eat rodents who have consumed these rodenticides, those animals can become ill and die. While not always fatal, ingesting rodenticides can lead to serious health issues including a lowered immune system and illnesses like mange, which can become life-threatening.
AB 2552 holds individuals who sell or use these substances accountable, and those in violation of the law will now face steeper fines — up to $25,000 per violation per day. By further restricting the use of these dangerous rodenticides, consumers will turn toward the wide range of existing cost-effective alternatives that do not harm other animals. Along with 59 other animal welfare organizations, San Diego Humane Society was a driving supporter of this act by Assemblymember Laura Friedman.

House Hippo, Galileo!
We have quite a few house hippos in our care, and today we're shining the spotlight on one very special resident at our Oceanside Campus: Galileo! While Galileo might resemble a hippo, his confidence isn't quite hippo-sized. But don't let that fool you — once he feels safe and comfortable, he'll show you just how enormous his heart really is.
Since joining us in August, Galileo has become a staff and volunteer favorite — and it’s easy to see why! This certified couch potato loves belly rubs and snuggling, but when the mood strikes, he’ll show off his playful side, guaranteed to put a smile on your face. Galileo (919883) is waiting for the stars to align and bring a family ready to love him to the Milky Way and back. Know someone searching for a certified Good Boy™? Tag them in the comments below!
Bonnie is a Pocket Full of Sunshine 🥹
Bonnie's not just walking on sunshine — she IS a ray of sunshine! And this resilient pup is shining her light on all who meet her ... as long as you can keep up, that is! As you can see, even with a splinted leg, Bonnie has plenty of pep in her step. This spunky gal came to us with a leg fracture that needed some TLC from the medical team at our Oceanside Campus, but now she's on the road to recovery and ready to find her new family!
The perfect mix of brains, energy and personality, Bonnie is always up for adventure. And although she loves making friends with every human she meets, she can be a little pickier with other pups. Sharing also isn't her favorite, so she’d prefer to be the only pup in the home — that way she gets all the toys to herself, and all your attention, too! Bonnie (934196) will shine her brightest with a family committed to supporting her with physical and mental enrichment and positive reinforcement training. If this ray of sunshine has hopped into your heart, come meet her at our Oceanside Campus today!
