The medical term for urinary tract blockage is urethral obstruction, since the urethra is the portion of the urinary tract where the blockage has occurred. You may also hear it referred to as a “blocked cat.” This blockage can result in life-threatening consequences such as dangerous electrolyte abnormalities. Urinary tract blockage in cats is a medical emergency, and any cat suspected to be blocked should be evaluated by a veterinarian immediately.

The best way to treat an allergy is avoidance of the cause and allergen. This may or may not always be possible. But, in terms of treatment, it depends on your dog’s type of allergy. If your veterinarian feels that an allergy is a likely cause, he or she may propose allergy testing to try and determine the cause of the allergen that is causing the reaction.

Heatstroke generally occurs during the hottest part of the year, especially when it is humid. Heatstroke in dogs is life threatening and can also result in very serious complications. There are early signs of heatstroke that you can be alert to that may help you remedy the condition before things get too serious. Early signs of heatstroke include: heavy panting and rapid breathing, excessive drooling, dry mucous membranes, bright red gums and tongue, skin hot to the touch, and a higher heart rate. Affected dogs become hyperactive and may have difficulty maintaining balance. Please seek emergency care right away if your pet is experiencing any of these signs.

Any dog can bite: big or small, male or female, young or old. Even the cuddliest, fuzziest, sweetest pet can bite if provoked. Remember, it is not a dog's breed that determines whether it will bite, but rather the dog's individual history and behavior.
Most dog bites are preventable, and there are many things you can do at home and within your community to help prevent them.
•Educate yourself and any children in your life about how to have a good interaction with a dog.
•Break your house into zones if you have young children. •Keep young children and the dog separated unless there is constant adult supervision. •Remove your dog from the situation whenever they seem to be anxious or agitated. •Provide your dog with a secure resting space and supervision in risky situations.

WHY YOU SHOULD CHIP YOUR PET. Collars and tags can be physically removed when a pet gets lost or stolen, but a microchip is tamper-proof and makes it nearly impossible to permanently lose a pet. Although microchips can’t tell you where your pet is (it doesn’t have GPS capabilities), it does alert you when it is activated. The first thing a veterinarian or shelter worker will do is check for a microchip, which is why it is so important to chip your pet. 🩺🐾

This year, April 24 through April 30 marks Veterinary Receptionist Week. Although receptionists go by many names—client care representatives, client service representatives, customer care relations, and more—no matter their label, they’re an essential part of the veterinary team. Although Veterinary Receptionist Week is celebrated only once per year, when you call us, keep in mind that these team members are critical to the overall running of a veterinary practice. They always deal with distressed, emotional pet owners with kindness and compassion, and they all do their best to ensure your pet receives the best care as quickly as possible. We appreciate all you do! We may be a bit biased, but we feel like we have the best team around! ❤️

National Pet First Aid Awareness Month is celebrated in April every year. This is a special month dedicated to raising awareness among pet parents and animal lovers about pet injuries and providing emergency care in case of injuries. The first thing you can do to prevent pet accidents is to become conscious of household items that could cause choking, injuries, sickness, or accidental poisoning to the animals. You also need to have your pet’s first-aid kit stocked and ready, just in case.

How to pet-proof your kitchen: Learning which foods are toxic to pets — Many common foods are toxic to pets, and can cause issues ranging from vomiting and diarrhea, to heart arrhythmias and kidney failure. Keep grapes, raisins, onions, garlic, chocolate, xylitol, macadamia nuts, and yeast dough away from your pet. Clearing the counters — Avoid leaving food out on your countertops, including food that is still packaged or stored in a tupperware container. Your pet can easily chew through plastic to reach tempting foods. Installing child-proof locks on cabinets and drawers — Exceptionally determined pets may be able to nose or paw open drawers or cabinets that contain forbidden foods, sharp utensils, or the various items that make up a junk drawer. Securely stash your snacks, knives, batteries, rubber bands, and other odds-and-ends in drawers and cabinets with child-proof locks. Heartworms are a serious and potentially fatal disease affecting dogs and cats. These parasites are transmitted by mosquitoes and can cause damage to the heart, lungs, and blood vessels. Therefore, pet owners must be aware of heartworm disease and take preventive measures to protect their furry friends. Heartworm is a parasitic disease caused by the mosquito-borne parasite Dirofilaria immitis. When an infected mosquito bites an animal, it transmits the heartworm larvae into the bloodstream. Over time, these larvae grow into adult worms that live in the animal's heart, lungs, and blood vessels. Heartworm disease is more commonly found in dogs but can also affect cats.

Heartworms are a serious and potentially fatal problem for pets. By taking simple steps to prevent heartworm infection, such as getting your pet tested, using a preventive medication, keeping them indoors during peak mosquito season, removing standing water, and keeping their environment clean, you can reduce the risk of heartworm infection and keep your furry friend healthy and happy.

🐣 Easter for pets is a special event, just like it is for humans. There are so many new colors in the house, baskets with goodies on the table, and these little oval shaped balls lying on the ground and throughout the house. Your human family members aren't the only ones who love to celebrate the holidays: your cats and dogs do, too! Maybe they'll be lucky and get their own pet Easter baskets, and if so, there are a few things you should know to keep your pets safe even when all you want to do is spoil them. That fake, decorative grass you put in the bottom of your children's Easter baskets poses a significant threat to your animals. Why? Well, both cats and dogs are curious creatures, and it's likely they'll play with and eventually ingest a few strands. When that happens, the decorative grass may have trouble moving through your pet's intestines or cause issues to the intestinal tract. Everyone knows that chocolate is bad for both dogs and cats, so of course you wouldn't put them in the pet Easter baskets. If there is chocolate of any sort in your children's baskets, your animals may accidentally ingest it, and you wouldn't want that to happen. The Pet Poison Helpline states that calls about dogs ingesting chocolate increase by nearly 200 percent during the week of Easter, so be prepared and keep the sweets in a place your animals cannot reach.
