LEARNING FROM OTHERS’ MISTAKES
Let’s stop dog attacks!

Today marks the 5-year anniversary of my dog Musik being brutally attacked at an on-leash dog park by a newly adopted husky who tried to kill her.

It was the most horrific experience I’ve ever lived through. It took poor Musik months to heal and she still has an aftermath of issues, both physical and emotional.

We continue to do what we can to educate people so this doesn’t have to happen to anyone else.

The two main things we want to continue to educate everyone about are:

1. Everyone has a right to protect their dog!!

Never be afraid to stand up for your (smaller) dog if you feel like another dog might be a threat. You have every right to intercept the other dog, yell at them, or otherwise protect your pet at all costs. Do not worry about what other people think or say about their hurt feelings simply because you don’t want your dog to potentially get eaten by their dog.

2. Do not let a dog off leash who has not been properly and fully vetted.

If you have a newly adopted dog, keep them on leash at all times until you and/or a professional has a chance to analyze their behavior in various situations and assure that off leash control is at 100% - and there’s no chance your dog could harm another dog. Or, for that matter, hurt a person. Or run away.

If everyone sticks to these two rules, we can GREATLY limit the amount of dog attacks. Everyone needs to be responsible for their dog in every way possible.

Please do not assume your dog is safe at any time if they have any ability to hurt another being. Watching your dog try to kill another dog, or bite a human, is not going to be enjoyable for you. And obviously being the one who’s being attacked is even worse. I would give almost anything to have Musik and my post traumatic stress dissipate. But I will always have a horrible, visceral reaction when I see a dog that looks like the one who tried to kill her... and so will she.

Here is some background on the incident and the aftermath:

We hope you do not need this advice, but we certainly hope you heed it - because it could save a dog’s life.

IS MY DOG FAT?
How to determine your dog's perfect weight.

Many people wonder if their dog is fit, or needs some dietary changes. Seeing as more than half of US dogs ARE overweight, it's an important question!

In our latest blog post, we show you how to determine if your dog is thin, heavy, or just right.

We also give some tips on how to get their weight down. We urge people to look this over and share widely. Please do not just use "diet food" (ridiculous and usually very unhealthy), or inadvertently starve your dog! Just by watching portions, treats, and table scraps, you can probably help your dog easily get healthier and live a longer, happier life!

THE DANGERS OF FOXTAILS
It's foxtail plant season - beware!

These little spawns of Satan have taken over San Francisco once again. They are in every park, sidewalk, and beach. And they are very dangerous for dogs.

Foxtails get into dogs' fur, and then under their skin where they get infected. They get in dogs' noses and "private parts". And, two years ago, one got into my dog's eye!

It's hard to avoid them, but you should try. You're at risk even if you walk anywhere near them since the seeds blow onto sidewalks & paths where dogs sniff.

I suggest stopping frequently and checking to see if anything is on your dog’s face, paws or body. They come off pretty easily if you catch them right away. If your dog starts sneezing excessively, that could be a sign that one got up their nose, so take them to the vet right away!

Here is some more info and the story of how we discovered a foxtail in my dog’s eye:

WHY WON’T ANYBODY PLAY WITH ME?
Here are some tips and fun games to play to keep your dog entertained and out of trouble!

It’s important that we take our dog rearing seriously and keep our dogs entertained and stimulated every day. Obviously doing training and commands is one way to work with them and build trust and form a closer bond. It also helps ensure their safety and the safety of people, dogs, and objects around them.

But commands and politeness & safety training is only part of what we can do to have fun with our pups. There are challenges and games we can play to further enrich their (and your!) lives and enhance your time together.

Whether you’re having your dog fetch something, hunt for some hidden objects or food, or solve a doggy puzzle, there are plenty of games you can play to keep your dog busy.

Here are a couple dozen suggestions that we wrote about for keeping your dog from getting too bored during the shelter in place a couple years ago. You can discover games, puzzles, and other challenges to keep them busy, happy, and out of trouble.

DOG BATH TIME TIPS 🛁
Now that it’s getting warmer out, our dogs are getting out to play more - and they are getting a lot dirtier!

Most dogs do not enjoy baths, although there are a few who do. Here are some tips for making bath time more safe and enjoyable for your pup.

https://www.poochcoach.com/bath-time/

In addition to those tips, we also added a rubber mat at the bottom of the sink where we bathe Musik. We originally bought it to keep dishes and glasses from breaking so easily, and it worked great. But it also makes the bath not slippery for the little Schnauzer. She feels a lot safer if she’s steady on her feet - especially when she can’t see! (For larger dogs, you can put a bathmat on the floor of the bath or shower).

Here’s to clean, sweet-smelling puppies everywhere!!

I GO CRAZY AROUND OTHER DOGS
Dog on Dog Reaction

The most common issue we work on here at The Pooch Coach is dog on dog reaction. Sometimes it’s over-excitement or frustration. Other times, it’s actual all out aggression… And everything in between!

Even though Gomez has brothers and sisters at home whom she gets along with, she doesn’t like new dogs that she meets on the street. This is very common with second or third dogs in one household, because they don’t get enough socialization with outside/new dogs when they are young like your first dog did. You can read about that in our article about second dog syndrome:
https://www.poochcoach.com/2nd-dog-syndrome/

When Gomez first saw The Pooch Coach’s dog Musik, Beverly was able to show Gomez‘s dad how to interact with her and keep her calm. And she stood nicely and ate treats while looking at Musik, which was shocking to him. 😲 This is what real life lessons are all about! The dog gets to learn in a real environment, and the people get to practice their skills during the lessons.

Good work Gomez! We’ll have you calmed down in no time!

Be careful out there!

This is an interesting article about what the coyotes around San Francisco have been eating. Definitely more proof that people are purposely feeding coyotes as well. Please don’t! They are finding plenty of food on their own, and we do not want them to become more accustomed to and less afraid of people!

Please keep your cats and dogs indoors at dusk until dawn to be safe as well.

I DON’T LIKE MY NEW STEP BROTHER

Tips for multiple dog households and integrating two dogs.

Dogs need time to adapt to new people, dogs, and situations just like people do. The Pooch Coach has helped many couples - like Lucy’s dad and his girlfriend, who are trying to combine households with their dogs.

Two dogs who have been living on their own with their individual people suddenly having to share that space with someone else can be scary, annoying, and exhausting. You need to slowly introduce the dogs by going for walks and visiting parks etc. together and then let them visit in each other’s households and supervise their interactions and make sure they understand how to get along nicely before letting them play with no restrictions.

If you are seeing any signs of 2 dogs not getting along, immediately contact a canine behaviorist for help! Please do not try to solve it on your own, because it can easily escalate, and someone can get hurt.

Here are some tips for integrating multiple dog households:

GET IN YOUR BED!
A simple and useful command.

We all need our dogs to settle down sometimes. One of the ways to do this is to teach your dog a “get in your bed” command. You can use it to have them get into a crate or kennel, into a regular dog bed, or even onto a towel you throw on the floor next to your seat at a restaurant.

It’s a great way to let your dog know where they should be at a given time so they can just relax - and not pace, get into trouble, or worry about what you want them to do.

Here are some easy instructions how to train your dog to get in any type of bed.

Let’s talk about p**p! 💩😁

WHY YOU SHOULD ALWAYS PICK UP YOUR DOG’S P**P

Obviously, not picking up your dog’s p**p is inconsiderate at best and dangerous at worst. It’s an easy way for dogs to spread diseases across an entire city. It’s also a good way to make people’s shoes disgusting.

But there are even some selfish reasons to make sure that you handle all your dog’s bowel movements...

Without seeing their p**p, you will not know if your dog is healthy.

P**p tells you so many things about your dog. If you see they have bad, loose, bloody, etc. stools, then you know to be on alert and ready to take your dog to the vet if needed. If you see the signs of a bad p**p, then you can start looking for any changes to appetite and energy levels. And then when you see more symptoms happening, you know it’s time to go to the vet.

Similarly, if your dog does not p**p, it could mean they’re jammed up and need help. So it’s important to see that they have not p**ped all day so you can try to help them by walking them a little extra and feeding them some more easy to digest carbs (e.g. rice, sweet potatoes, noodles, etc.) to get everything pushed through their system. This is a good choice if you think they might have swallowed something a little too big, or need some help getting their intestines cleaned out.

Here is an article we found that helps describe the different types of p**p and what they mean and when to be concerned.

Merry Christmas!!

This year‘s Christmas picture is an oldie but a goodie. This is Kompis, who left us 6 years ago. We wanted to post this in her memory. She was one of the sweetest dogs we’ve ever known. RIP, little one.

Holidays can bring out a lot of mixed feelings. There is obviously a lot to be happy about, but it’s hard when we are missing loved ones. It’s OK to feel sad sometimes too. 😢

So we hope your dogs bring you the kind of joy that only dog people feel and understand.

Merry Christmas to everyone, including our furry family members!
