Catering to you and your pets' needs. Welcome! I have been working professionally with animals since 2006.

I’m Shannon Bolt (they/she/he), and I’ve created The Domestic Animal page to connect my clients and the community at large to the work that I do with people’s pets. After working in dog day care and animal rescue including working as a feline adoption counselor, I started this private animal care and training business in 2011. I was inspired to specialize in working with animals with challenging b
ehaviors after owning a dog named Kai who had severe separation anxiety, dog reactivity, and human aggression. This experience highlighted for me the need for skilled handling and support for households that include animals with these kinds of difficult behaviors. Kai also taught me the true love and profound bond we can feel when we open our hearts to pets that have a difficult time fitting into our modern, domestic environments. Working with animals that require specialized care and their families fulfills my sense of purpose to foster harmony between people and their pets. When I help humans experience greater ease with and understanding of their animals, I feel joy knowing that I’ve helped expand the capacity for peace and love in the world, even if it is just in a small corner of it. With animals that would normally resist bonding with a new person, there’s a beautiful moment where they come to recognize me as a safe person so they can start to allow themselves to be vulnerable and tender with me. They feel that I see them and that I can respond to their needs, which in turn creates a feeling of trust and connection that I long for, as well. This drives me to support as many misunderstood animals as possible, and we facilitate healing for each other in the process. This is the experience I want for my human clients, too. Over the years, I have endeavored to develop my education and skills through training apprenticeships and attending numerous workshops with such renowned behavior experts as Susan Friedman, Bob Bailey, Parvene Farhoody, Steve Martin, and Sophia Yin, as well as many classes and conferences offered by organizations like IAABC and UC Davis. This education and experience has helped me further my mission to facilitate humans and animals living with equanimity. Primarily providing direct care services like private walking, training, and sitting for animal families in San Francisco, I also offer virtual training consultations and adoption counseling for clients around the world. My primary expertise is with cats and dogs with fear/anxiety, reactivity, and aggression. I have also worked with birds, reptiles, and other small animals, and I’m always eager to care for species that are new to me! Most of the animals in our homes may be domesticated, though that doesn’t mean that they adapt easily to the domestic life. I endeavor to find solutions for domestic animals, including humans. To schedule a consultation or inquire about other services, you can message me through this page or email me at [email protected]
Salt dissolves in water. And that's the way she likes it. She also likes a good view of the birds.
My fiancé Britt is helping me take care of the parrots this weekend so I can sleep with the Snorty Crew for some unexpected travel. His primary experience caring for birds was with our late great lovebird Picaroon, and the greys are an entirely different ballgame. We spent some extra time this week getting everyone a little more acclimated to each other. Loki and Pepper each took turns hanging out on his knee, which is the primary way they bond with new humans. Tgese two are sweet when they want to be...a quality which I relate to!
Sonny developed an aversion to having his face touched by strangers as a puppy. Food allergies caused him to develop painful facial sores, and when the vet went to touch his face, he snapped at them. As a pandemic puppy, he also didn't get enough exposure to novel humans in safe environments. The combination led him to feel conflicted with new people, and at 200+ pounds his insecurities present a greater challenge than they might for a smaller dog.
His parents invested so much to help me build a safe relationship with Sonny so that they could relax while they travel knowing no one would be in danger in their absence. I visited daily for weeks leading up to my first stay with the Snorty Crew.
Now, Sonny could not be more thrilled when I come over. And in an interesting turn of events, one of his favorite things to receive from me are face scritches. Even now when he's been battling an uncomfortable ear infection, he wants me to rub all over his face and head. He demands it! And I'm happy to oblige.
Meet Izzy, Leo, and Frankie! Three snuggle muffins I'm starting to take care of. They are all such sweet peas. ❤️
Happy Hatch Day to Pepper! And his red tail is decorated for Valentine's Day every day!
A little over a week ago, Jeero the French bulldog left his earthly body and crossed the rainbow bridge. A couple of hours after his passing, his buddy Sutro and I had just climbed to the top of Tank Hill when a brilliant, complete double rainbow lit up the San Francisco sky. I like to think that double rainbow was Jeero telling us he'd safely reached the beyond and sending his love back to us.
Jeero and I worked and played together for ten years. He was a phenomenally old Frenchie, and he had remarkably good health until the last month of his life. We went through so much together over the years, and he proved to be a great family dog when his wonderful owners expanded their family with two children.
Despite his difficulties with dog reactivity, he was able to make friends with numerous other reactive dogs in my care over the years. He even convinced a few Frenchie haters over the years that his breed wasn't so bad. A few of his most notable friends were Cody, Lucca, and Gaston.
Jeero taught me so much about dog training. In addition to refining my handling and training methods with reactive dogs, it's because of him that I developed my restraint-free nail grinding technique, which has helped other dogs, as well. And if you thought an old dog couldn't learn new tricks, Jeero learned how to keep his cool around horses in his last year.
In honor of my good friend, here are some photos from Jeero's last day, his rainbow, and our last walk a few weeks prior. We'll love and miss you forever, big guy.
Sutro at Crissy Field! Two iconic San Francisco landmarks in one photo.
Do you remember the puppy Bonnie?! She's fully grown now at ten pounds and we got to spend several hours together last month.
Sutro hopes to reach new heights in 2024!
She's a bit of a blur, but that's only because Jules was having so much fun rolling around on her play mat. She stuck her body through two of the holes and temporarily looked like two cats!
And here's my cat Dolly being cute in her favorite lap.
Jeero is getting friendly with the horses. It's taken over a year of patient exposure with these equine assistants to get to the point where Jeero can get so right up to the horses in the corral and keep his cool. Good boy!
Rocío is still super tiny! But she fills a lap up nicely.
Pancake and Chloe felt the holiday spirit, too!
Nero, Cal, and Tibby also got to celebrate Catmas with me!
The Snorty Crew hopes you had a holiday season full of warm snuggles, long naps, and extra delicious cookies.
You've heard of Elf on a Shelf, now get ready for...
Happy New Year! 2023 has been so busy that I haven't been able to keep up with posting cute animal content. I'm hoping to roll out my backlog of photos and videos in mostly reverse order.
Let's start with little Ivy! She's an anxious little Boston terrier with severe fear of new humans. Even with doing regular visits to help her acclimate to me for months in advance, she still broke down with intense reactivity, anorexia, and resource guarding the day after her mom left.
With patience, gentleness, and skilled experimentation with her medication, she slowly relaxed with me. By the end of the trip, we were best friends. She would greet me at the door, demand kisses, and let me pick her up occasionally. She turned into a cuddle bug, asking for pets and scritches all over her tiny body. Her mom left her a Christmas stocking, which she loved getting treats from on Christmas Day and beyond. Her favorite toy is a balloon on a string, and she enjoyed "product testing" my new flirt pole and braided fleece.
Dogs like Ivy are exactly why I focus my work with challenging animals. Their families love them deeply and go above and beyond to give them a good quality of life. Their humans need breaks from their care, and finding a carer who can not only ensure the animal's safety but their own is a tall order. For their animal to know peace and happiness in their family's absence is icing on the cake.
Thanks, Ivy, for letting me into your home and heart this holiday season.
Goodnight, sweet Gus.
Last night, I said goodbye to my sister's 15yo collie mix who leaves this earthly plane today. I helped raise him since he was a little puppy, and we have been best friends. He is a complicated dog, as my favorites usually are. I'm grateful that I got the chance to give him my love one last time.
Ares had a special day on Thursday. Not only did we get to see each other twice but our second outing was an amazing 2hr Lincoln Park/Lands End adventure!
Sutro and I took in the views and inspected the fallen trees at Tank Hill this week.
Rocky has been showing me all around her neighborhood. I finally found out where Billy Goat Hill is! There is a lot of fun art around here. Rocky is an excellent model for photos, as well.
Are you ready to Rock(y) and roll?
Hobbes says, "Mischief managed!"
J/k his mischief never ends. 😂😂😂
I'm back with the Hobbes. He was such a fan of my old overnight bag. This is his first exposure to the new one. It looks like he approves. I guess I shouldn't be surprised since my cat Dolly loves it so much that I often find her licking it like an ice cream cone. They must weave catnip into the fabric.
Happy St. Patrick's Day! Jeero and I were lucky enough to spot this fresh mushroom on a walk this week. I always think it's so cool to find mushrooms so fresh that the earth they pushed through is still resting on the cap. Not a pot of gold, but still a treasure. And Jeero is the cutest little leprechaun I ever did see.
I tried to get Ares to pose holding this branch that had somehow gotten into her backyard but it was just TOO EXCITING! MUST CHEW! It was ok, though because we used it as a training reward and used it to work on emotional regulation around Exciting Chew Things.™️
Monday was a breakthrough day at Starr King for Rudy. He started out overstimulated as usual. But within about ten minutes he really chilled out and started acting more like his normal self. He was relaxed and engaged, taking in the environment without the frantic, compulsive seeking for an unknown something. At the end he had the option to go back to the open space from the neighborhood and he chose to stay on the sidewalk by the school without showing any signs of aversion either. He just made a choice, and he finally had the capacity for choice instead of being compelled by his sympathetic nervous system. Good work, Rutabaga!
We did a little experiment to see how these two would feel about sitting in the car together. It was good!
Sutro and Jeero got out together on a dry day last week.

In addition to Valentine's Day, it is also Pepper's 18th birthday today! In honor of the important occasion, here's a video I shot last week of one of his delightful performances. He sings, he dances, he acts silly. Time to send this triple threat to Juilliard. Happy birthday, Pepper! #Pepper #africangrey #africangreyparrot #birds #birdlovers #birdsoffacebook #birdsitter #petsitter #birthdayboy #valentines #valentinesday
Here we go! My long stay with the parrots is upon us. This video is from the overnight we had last week when they both still seemed super excited to have me there. This was after breakfast and Pepper was the most talkative I've ever seen, going through an extensive repertoire of impersonations, words, whistles, and sound effects. As I was filming Pepper, Loki seemed like he was feeling left out from the attention, so I offered him a rope I was holding to step up and join the fun. He's not as talkative, though you'll see he throws in a whistle for the camera. One of the ways I like to connect with birds is by parroting them back or offering my version of the sounds I know they make, which you'll here in this video. After this, we hung out for a while and then the birds went easily into their cages so I could go take care of other animals for awhile. Everything seemed to be going smoothly, and I felt super optimistic about an easy day with the lads. When I returned, I was momentarily terrified when I saw Loki's cage empty but seemingly locked up. Soon I discovered him playing on Pepper's cage. What a relief! But how did he get out of his locked cage?! Loki had pushed out his paper tray and climbed out through the narrow space between the bottom bar and the bottom of the drawer! As far as I could tell, nothing else looked amiss and everyone was safe. I fashioned a block for the drawer after that. African greys and other medium to large parrots are notorious for keeping their humans on their toes with their cleverness and mischief. #Pepper #Loki #africangrey #africangreyparrot #birds #birdlovers #birdsoffacebook #birdsitter #petsitter #parrots #parrotlife #shenanigans
Here's a video of a later training session with Ripley working to build up the food toy retrieval behavior. You'll notice that she is getting less frustrated and offering fewer unrelated behaviors. By the end of the video, the criteria have been elevated to 1) locate the orange food toy in a different room after I say, "Toy," 2) pick up the orange toy, and 3) bring the food toy anywhere in the room where I'm standing. Since I don't work with Ripley on a regular basis, I expect this behavior to lose some sophistication the next time we have the opportunity to work on it. So I will do a few reps with more relaxed criteria before ramping up again and continuing to the finished behavior. I also want this behavior to be adaptable, so we will practice it with different start and finish locations, as well as making sure she understands that the behavior applies to bringing the toy up and down the stairs. #Ripley #pitbull #pitbulllife #pibble #pibblelove #pibblelife #pibbling #dogsoffacebook #dogtrainer #dogsitter #petsitter #dogtricks #dogtraining
Here's the first video of two that I took of working with Ripley on training a new behavior. What I ultimately want is for her to go find her orange food toy anywhere in the house and bring it to me wherever I am so I can fill it with her meal when I say, "Toy." Here we are using her dinner as reinforcement for building the behavior I want to see. Now, Ripley isn't as fast at solving training puzzles like Ares is, so I have to work with what she's able to give me and figure out what I can do to produce a behavior that's closer to what I'm looking for. The first challenge was getting Ripley to put her open mouth on the toy, which we worked on before this video. She wanted to just target the toy repeatedly, so we had to get her away from thinking that was the final behavior. Then I had to figure out how to get her to put the toy in her mouth when I wasn't holding it. An idle toy on the floor didn't work but tossing it towards her body did. Then we moved to picking it up from where it was already laying inertly. You can see in this video that the learning process for this behavior is pretty frustrating for Ripley. She's also offering a lot of unsolicited behavior that's easier for her in case that works. When that doesn't work, she tries something else until it does work. This is very good for a dog's brain. If everything we learned was easy to learn, it wouldn't work out our brains as much. It also helps us build the skills of resilience and perseverance. This kind of learning is an excellent way to reduce the risk of dementia for humans and dogs. Positive reinforcement training also releases oxytocin in the human trainer and the canine learner, which is great for everyone's mood and social bonds. #Ripley #pitbull #pitbulllife #pibble #pibblelove #pibblelife #pibbling #dogsoffacebook #dogtrainer #dogsitter #petsitter #dogtraining #dogtricks #newskills #trainingismedicine #coregulation

Ripley's got a new trick! This came about because she loves jumping for a high Touch on walks, so I figured we'd make it its own cue. She hasn't figured out the verbal cue yet, though she's got the hand signal okay. She's pretty good at getting that dense pitbull figure up in the air! #Ripley #pitbull #pitbulllife #pibble #pibblelove #pibblelife #pibbling #dogsoffacebook #dogtrainer #dogsitter #petsitter #jumpingdog #dogtricks
This is a video from Rudy's second trip to Starr King Open Space. He was much more relaxed this time, and his stress signs are subtle if you don't know him well. Notice how he's almost completely disconnected from me emotionally. I communicate with him and he doesn't engage. This is very unusual for Rudy. He's also pulling me the whole time, and he's only still when he's trying to go in a direction we're not going in. He can't take in much of the environment except by sniffing, probably because to do so would be too overwhelming. You can see his fast respiration, and the way his facial muscles curve tightly into a look of concern instead of ease. When offered basic kibble, he considers it and refuses it (he would still take Rawbble). The fervor with which he's pulling is less than it was during our first trial. Overall, he was more relaxed at the park to begin with, though the difference in comfort between start and end was less dramatic. He was also much more shut down in the car on the way home. You might ask why I'd bother to continue taking Rudy somewhere that stresses him out. The first answer is to broaden his horizons as his current universe walking in his neighborhood is pretty small (and full of trash that he likes to compulsively consume). The second reason is because learning to adapt to novel environments is good for him and will build his resiliency over time. The third is because Rudy has shown that he can acclimate to new environments with repeated exposure, and once we're through this hard part I expect him to have a lot of fun exploring this space that's easy to get to from his home. #Rutabaga #Rudy #jindo #jindodog #jindomix #rescuedog #rescuedogsrock #rescuedogsrule #rescuedogtraining #dogsitter #petsitter #dogtrainer #anxiousdog #dogsoffacebook #potrerohill #StarrKing #dogpark #stressrecovery #newhorizons
This video might get muted because of the music in the background, but it doesn't need sound anyway. On Wednesday morning, I caught the boys having a sweet moment of tenderness. The #twins are back together this weekend! This is shortly after getting back from their first walk of the #slumberparty together and their first opportunity to play. I didn't even have a chance to take off their leashes before they dove in. We're doing two nights for the first time this trip, and I think they're going to have a great time. #Ripley #Bud #pitbull #pitbullmix #pibble #pibblelove #pibblelife #pibbling #dogsoffacebook #dogtrainer #dogsitter #petsitter #bestfriends #bffs #seeingdouble
Ares is learning a new trick. I'm asking her to Hold an item gently until I tell her to Drop It. We started with my nitrile glove. After this we tried a paper towel. She's such a smart girl. A little training video (before my phone ran out of storage) of working on Sit/Stay. Bonnie has the Sit part down but not the Stay. The two problems most people make when training Stay is that they start with expectations of duration that are too high and with too many distractions. Here we're working in a quiet indoor environment and I start only with a few seconds of duration without any movement from me. Then I added me simply getting up on my knees from sitting back on my heels. That's it! From here, I'd add the step of rocking back on my feet but not yet standing up. For a puppy with so little impulse control, it's important to make tiny increments without doing too much that might naturally prompt her to break the position. This sets the puppy and the trainer up for success with less frustration. #Bonnie #BonBon #blackpoodle #poodle #poodlepuppy #poodlegram #poodlelove #poodlelife #dogsoffacebook #dogtrainer #dogsitter #petsitter
Remember Kachia who was so terrified a few months ago that she got herself trapped trying to hide behind the hot water heater? Well this is what she usually acts like. Super snuggly and happy. We still don't know why she was so stressed during the fall trip, though she appears to be back to her usually affectionate self. #Kachia #browntabbycat #tabbycat #tabby #tabbycatsrule #tabbylife #tabbycatlovers #shycat #catsoffacebook #cattrainer #catsitter #petsitter
Ares has been recovering from an injury, so we had to come up with some low-intensity ways to exercise that massive brain of hers. Here's the new leg weave trick we're working! #Ares #germanshepherd #GSD #gsdlife #dogsoffacebook #teenager #adolescentdogs #dogtrainer #dogtricks
The post-walk party yesterday! Once I started talking to him, Sutro kept jumping up on my leg so it was difficult to capture their free activity on video. I think you get the idea, though, that it was no big deal and like they had known each other for ages. #Jeero #Sutro #frenchbulldog #frenchie #frenchielife #dogsoffacebook #poodlemix #minpinmix #terriermix #reactivedogs #reactivedogtraining #dogtrainer
Rudy gets dressed! When I first started working with Rudy, he felt conflicted about harness time. He felt EXTRA excited to go for a walk, though he didn't really like having a harness shoved over his head. So he would often grab the harness with his mouth, run away with it, and then prance around out of reach with it for a few minutes. So I trained him to dress himself, which is my preferred way for dogs to get dressed. I apply this same method to muzzle training. This preserves the dog's autonomy and consent. It has the added bonuses of speeding up gear time and being super cute! #Rutabaga #Rudy #dogsoffacebook #jindo #jindodog #jindomix #rescuedog #rescuedogsrock #rescuedogsrule #rescuedogtraining #dogtrainer
