Refined k-9 is San Francisco's resource for quality personalized dog training as well as rehabilitation for dogs with mild to severe behavioral issues. We devote our knowledge of the canine and his behavior and apply this to a training program designed especially for you and your pet. Our goal is to provide our clients with the skills to understand and better communicate with their dogs using both traditional and new age methods.

I’m thrilled to announce Jose Moreno’s return to dog training! Jose and I have been training together for nearly 15 years. He’s one of the best trainers I know and we are so lucky to have him back after taking a couple years off to home school his 3 kids. Welcome Olivia! Looking forward to working with you and your parents! Olivia has an excellent temperament for a cattle dog which can be a difficult breed for a city environment. Some fine tuning will boost her confidence as well as her owners. 🩵

Meet our trainer Kate! started our at a client of Theo’s well over a year ago. Kate has since attended the as well as interned with several fantastic trainers around the Bay Area. Kate routinely trainers her sport dog Rouge in French Ring, and her Ecuadorian street dogs in other activities such as nose work, agility, and even some dock diving! When Kate isn’t working with Board and Train dogs (such as Gracie seen here) she WILL be found with at least one dog by her side!! Read more about Kate Cusimano on our website!!

Well I know we have said it before… but here we are so far behind on our posts! Meet Stella! This sweet rescue has some anxiety to overcome. With a balance of structured engagement, place work, and more down time “off duty” this girl can relax into a routine perfect for a GSD.

We are painfully behind on our client posts… just too busy training all the dogs! 😅 I will be catching up the best I can! In the meantime I would like to introduce you to Cassie! Her dad Jamel Ramiro, Personal Trainer] has been an incredible advocate for her since her adoption. This girl was featured on a show before her SF based adoption. She was incredibly fearful and shutdown. Jamel has worked with a few trainers over the years who have all helped him in many ways. We are looking forward to continuing that work with a balanced approach to her reactivity and discomfort around new people. I absolutely love this dog after meeting her. It’s clear to see why Jamel couldn’t leave her at the rescue! ❤️

{Ozzy} This little guy is starting his adult training with us! We have know Ozzy since he was 8 weeks old 🥲 His awesome owners have been vigilant about his training since day one, but with a Welsh Terrier like Ozzy, remote recall is a MUST! These little guys are as brave as any when it comes to hunting down foxes and other smaller vermin. This makes thier small animal prey drive very strong! We will be carefully working with ozzy to get his family a safe and off leash lifestyle over the next month!

{ KODI } We are so behind on our posting! 🤦🏻‍♀️ Blame the owner with a working puppy at home 🥴
This beautiful red little fox of an Aussie just got a human baby sibling!
His parents started training a couple months ago with our SF based trainer Kim.
Aussies are not an easy city dog.
They can get easily over stimulated to the point of being over threshold on a simple walk. These dogs need copious amounts of proper mental stimulation. A simple walk doesn’t always provide that.
Working with Kodi Kim showed the owners how to mentally challenge him on a schedule as well as provide structure to his home. Though careful counter conditioning protocols he’s been able to walk past dogs without an issue.
They are lucky to have started early with this guy because it could have been much worse had it gone on into his adulthood. 🙏👏🙌 To everyone’s efforts in this pup!

{ Ellis } This handsome chocolate lab just started his intensive marker reconstruction with his private trainer. Ellis’s previous training became a bit confusing when he wasn’t introduced to tools properly. He was also accidentally rewarded for some of his unwanted behaviors. Ellis is insanely smart, he’s figured out how to get exactly what he wants from his owners! A true 😈 😇

{ Leia } This tiny 5.5 month old had her first session today! Destined for the gun dog life, Leia will be raised a little different from the average pet pup, but not different at all from a working Duck Tolling Retriever! Leia is starting the foundation to her marker training and engagement, along with whistle and e collar recall!

{ Squid } Quite possibly one of the best dog names to date 🦑 Squid started her training journey with us a couple weeks ago. She and her mom worked hard with another trainer out of state. But now that they are in the Big city, they are experiencing big city problems. We are going back a little to tighten up some obedience and counter condition her response to dogs. This way we can preserve her correction, responsiveness and engagement!

{ Zuko } Handsome right? This beautiful poised little gentleman is holding a lot of anxiety inside… fairly new to his parents Zuko is dealing with some left over separation anxiety after being rescued from a hoarding situation. While crate training a dog with these behavior issues is never easy, Zuko’s parents have committed their time and hearts to the task. We are all looking forward to a more balanced, zen wold for Zuko ❤️

{ Bodhi } is a 7 month old Golden Doodle. He can be overly mouthy and possessive over toys. More concerning is his possession of things he finds on the street… Living in the Haight, it's especially important to teach Bodhi not to pick anything off the ground as this area can have very dangerous items such as needles, chicken bones, or worse drugs 🥴. Sadly there have been several cases of dogs injecting narcotics in this area. So far he's doing great with our newest trainer Kim Capria! He also loves to play ball and has an overall goofy personality. 🤪

Trainer Kim Capria started working with this baby dude a couple weeks ago!! Our Foundation Puppy Program is the perfect personal jump start to your training! We love to meet one on one with owners in their homes so we can learn more about you and your dog specifically!.
We help you with topics such as:
Crate Training & Potty Training
Marker Training (shaping the behaviors you want).
Engagement Training ( teaching your dog to look to you and enjoy paying attention to you in and setting).
Basics - Sit, down, come, stay etc.
We also prepare your puppy for PROPER exposure to sounds and sights of the Bay Area.
Help wirh troubleshooting fear periods (should the arise).
How to properly interrupt and manage mouthiness and other unwanted behaviors.
As they mature to 4-6 months we also Intro them to more advanced training such as:
Heeling on a leash and understanding leash pressure.
Place Command (teaches your puppy how to settle in new environments)
And much more!!

{ Uma } Just started our behavior modification program with our newest trainer Kim Capria! Uma came to us wirh reactive tendencies. She protects the front door as well as her self when on walks. She’s a bit shy and leash reactive. Soon enough she will be engaged and have a confidant strut under the carful watch of Kim!!

For those of you who don’t know Stark @stark_the_black_gsd is my working puppy. We have spent months taking a step back from our French Ring club to trouble shoot some of Starks targeting and impulse control issues in a low stress environment. Jose (the guy taking the hits in the video) is one of the best trainers I know and the person I always turn to when The perfectionist in me can’t let something go! I don’t mention Jose on this page, but he’s responsible for a large number of our board and train success stories. I’ve know Jose Moreno for nearly 14 years now. He’s been with Refined K9 since the near start as my first trainer! Here we are so much later in our lives and we still get to work together on something we both love. Happy sport dogs!
