Rescue the Underdog

Rescue the Underdog is a foster based, non profit dog rescue in the Bay Area. Some are strays, some are surrendered simply because they are “old”.

Rescue the Underdog is a small San Francisco based, volunteer-run organization that saves dogs from being euthanized in high kill shelters. We are part of Center for Animal Rescue and Education in Solano, a 501(c)(3) organization.

Most of the dogs are rescued from the Central Valley, often hours before being put down. Rescue the Underdog tries to save as many dogs as we can, with our goal being

to save them all. We take dogs that no other rescue will take. So we might end up with unpopular breeds, older dogs, dogs who need special medical care, or dogs who need to be socialized. We also have plenty of young, healthy, well-adjusted dogs who are abandoned for no apparent reason. We do everything we can to save them all, get them the medical care they need, socialize them, and place them in loving foster homes, eventually to be adopted into forever homes. Our dogs are special, and many of them need adopters who will give them time to adjust and feel safe in their loving new homes. Our reward is in saving these precious lives and seeing the joy that we bring to people's lives when they find their perfect match in an Underdog. There is no greater joy than to see an underdog's transformation, from the time they are pulled from the shelter to when they are adopted by a loving family. If you’d like to help, you can volunteer, foster, adopt, or donate. We are always in need of fosters, and we are in special need of donations to cover the special medical care that some of our dogs need.

🐾 From Foster to Forever: Teddy’s Journey 🐾

When Teddy came to Rescue The Underdog (RTU) in May 2023, he was anxious and reactive, making him a tough match for adopters. But thanks to his incredible foster family, Katherine and Dallas, Teddy got the care, training, and patience he needed to thrive.

Fast forward one year, and the bond they built was unbreakable. “We worked so hard to make him adoptable,” Katherine shared. “But in the process, we realized we couldn’t let him go.” Now, Teddy has the forever home he deserves! 💛

🐾 Pup-Approved Thanksgiving Foods: What to Share and Skip 🦃

This Thanksgiving, treat your pup to some festive bites, but make sure they’re safe! Here’s a quick guide:

Meet Twinkle, a resilient 15-pound terrier who was rescued from a hoarding situation in Los Angeles with over 100 animals. After spending her first year in a cage, she arrived at RTU shy, scared, and unable to trust. Thanks to our dedicated volunteers, Twinkle made her way to the Bay Area and found a loving foster home with Rod and Judy Hall.

With patience and the help of their poodle, Oliver, Twinkle began to blossom. She bonded with Oliver, learned to enjoy walks, and even mastered off-leash beach adventures! Her transformation reached a milestone recently when she allowed Rod to hold her for the first time.

Twinkle’s journey wasn’t easy, but her story shows the power of love and persistence. Once a frightened pup, she now greets the world with curiosity and excitement. Each step forward reminds us of the incredible resilience of rescue dogs.

“Focus on the successes,” the Halls advise. “Be patient—it takes time, but it’s so worth it.”

Meet Ferdinand: A Journey of Hope and Healing 🐾

When Ferdinand came to RTU in early 2024, he was undernourished, flea-ridden, and afraid of everything around him. On his first night, he bolted and hid in a neighbor’s bushes, terrified. But with the help of foster volunteers Ella and Nina, and board member Kendra, Ferdinand was coaxed into a safe, loving home. 💙

In April, Kendra adopted Ferdinand, fully committing to his healing. He’s since gained 10 pounds, loves his trips to the dog park, and is finally living his best life.

❤️“He’s my heart and he’s perfect,” Kendra says.

At Rescue the Underdog, we believe in the power of second chances and the resilience of underdogs. Meet Noodle 🐾, the ultimate pack member! He loves having doggie siblings to follow and play with. He's a big fan of toys, often carrying his favorites around the house, though he can get a bit mischievous—hide your books!

Noodle is gentle with kids and other dogs, but he’s still warming up to pets and touch. He’s not aggressive and has started approaching for hand sniffs. Bath time isn’t his favorite, but he tolerates it well. He’s also working on his leash skills but could use a little help.

You can try to create an ofrenda for your pet this Día de los Mu***os—it’s a meaningful way to keep their memory alive. Here’s how:

Pick a Spot: Use a table, shelf, or corner to build the altar.
Add a Photo: Place a favorite photo of your pet at the center.
Include Personal Items: Add toys, a collar, bowls with water or treats.
