Rescue the Underdog

Rescue the Underdog is a foster based, non profit dog rescue in the Bay Area. Some are strays, some are surrendered simply because they are “old”.

Rescue the Underdog is a small San Francisco based, volunteer-run organization that saves dogs from being euthanized in high kill shelters. We are part of Center for Animal Rescue and Education in Solano, a 501(c)(3) organization.

Most of the dogs are rescued from the Central Valley, often hours before being put down. Rescue the Underdog tries to save as many dogs as we can, with our goal being

to save them all. We take dogs that no other rescue will take. So we might end up with unpopular breeds, older dogs, dogs who need special medical care, or dogs who need to be socialized. We also have plenty of young, healthy, well-adjusted dogs who are abandoned for no apparent reason. We do everything we can to save them all, get them the medical care they need, socialize them, and place them in loving foster homes, eventually to be adopted into forever homes. Our dogs are special, and many of them need adopters who will give them time to adjust and feel safe in their loving new homes. Our reward is in saving these precious lives and seeing the joy that we bring to people's lives when they find their perfect match in an Underdog. There is no greater joy than to see an underdog's transformation, from the time they are pulled from the shelter to when they are adopted by a loving family. If you’d like to help, you can volunteer, foster, adopt, or donate. We are always in need of fosters, and we are in special need of donations to cover the special medical care that some of our dogs need.

Meet Stevie (ID # A595229), a tiny brown Chihuahua with a heart full of love. She’s been at the shelter since February 13, 2025, and her time is running out. This little girl deserves a second chance, and we are desperately searching for a foster or adopter to save her life.

✅ Just needs a safe place to decompress and feel loved

She is available for adoption starting February 17, 2025. But she needs a committed foster or adopter ASAP to make sure she gets out in time!

When Teddy came to Rescue The Underdog (RTU) in May 2023, he was anxious and reactive, making him a tough match for adopters. But thanks to his incredible foster family, Katherine and Dallas, Teddy got the care, training, and patience he needed to thrive.

Fast forward one year, and the bond they built was unbreakable. “We worked so hard to make him adoptable,” Katherine shared. “But in the process, we realized we couldn’t let him go.” Now, Teddy has the forever home he deserves! 💛
