UPDATE: Thanks so much to everyone who has reached out to help Chance. We have found an amazing foster to give him his last chance to live with dignity!

We appreciate you all sending him love and support.

💔 Foster Needed: 17-Year-Old Chocolate Lab “Chance” 💔

Seventeen years. That’s how long Chance has been a loyal companion, giving love every single day of his long life. Now, in his golden years, this gentle old soul has lost his person. After his owner passed away, Chance was left with nowhere to go—and he ended up at the shelter. At 17 years old, he deserves so much more than the stress of a kennel.

Chance is sweet with people and still has a spark of life in him. He just needs a quiet home where he can be your one and only dog. A soft bed to rest his tired body. A patch of grass in the sun. A kind human to offer him love, gentle pets, and maybe a short stroll so he can sniff the neighborhood “p*e-mail.” That’s all Chance is asking for.

Despite his age, Chance is doing remarkably well. Yes, arthritis makes him a little stiff, but he still gets around and enjoys being with his people. He’s current on vaccinations and simply needs a soft landing for his final chapter.

This boy has given his whole heart for nearly two decades. Please—help us give Chance the comfort, dignity, and love he so deeply deserves.
When we meet fur babies like Chance, rescue work seems hard. BUT we wouldn't change a thing even if it hurts our hearts!

📍 Chance is located in Martinez, CA.

Meet Rex — resilient, goofy, and ready to belong

**3-year-old male • Yellow mix • 77 lbs • Neutered**
**Location:** Mountain View, CA

His road to us

Rex’s story starts with a scare. A good Samaritan brought him to a Stanislaus County vet after he was likely hit by a car or fell from a truck. He arrived scraped up, with a dislocated hip and a spirit that still wanted to say “hi.” A rescue advocate in Modesto reached out, and we moved quickly. After medical boarding and a few vet visits, Rex had FHO surgery in mid-April to repair his femur. He’s healed beautifully and kept his sunny, try-again grin through it all.

# # Life in foster

“Rex came to me right after surgery, on four meds and wearing the cone of shame,” his foster says. “Fast-forward a few months—this boy has blossomed.”

House manners: 100% housebroken, polite in the home and yard.
Crate: Learned to love it; chills for a few hours when foster is out.
Sleep & meals: Great appetite; sleeps through the night on a dog bed in the bedroom.
Favorite hobbies:Following his person, sunbathing, sniffaris, and (given the chance) chasing squirrels and birds.

What he still works on

Rex loves people deeply—he wants to be near you and be your shadow. Outside, his prey drive kicks in and he can be anxious/reactive when he sees other dogs, cats, or fast-moving wildlife. He’s not a dog-park dog. With slow, proper introductions he can do fine with certain dogs (he walks with the neighbor’s dog). Walks will be a training project; backyard play and structured decompression time are his sweet spot right now.

What our Rescue Rep says

This “mystery mix” kept us guessing… until the DNA test came back: half Doberman, half Pit Bull Terrier.Regal, athletic, and sensitive—yep, it tracks.
On neighborhood walks he’s hyper-vigilant and can “lose his marbles” around dogs/cats/squirrels, so we’re partnering with professional trainers on a thoughtful desensitization plan you can continue at home. He’ll thrive with a **savvy, steady adopter** who appreciates progress over perfection.

**Best-fit home:**

* Experienced dog person who’s home a lot and enjoys daily backyard exercise and enrichment
* Ready to continue training and management on walks
* No small kids, no cats, and no unsteady family members
* A calm, consistent household; optional well-matched dog with *very slow intros could be OK

Health

Up to date on vaccinations, microchipped, heartworm negative, and neutered. Post-FHO, he’s building muscle nicely and moves comfortably.

---

Why Rex?

Because he’s the kind of dog who’s been through something hard and still leans in for love. He will greet you at the door like you’re his whole world. Give him structure, kindness, and a safe routine, and you’ll get a loyal, goofy best friend who’s happiest just being near his person.

**“Hi, I’m Simba — and I’m Looking for My Forever Family”**

Hi there… my name is Simba. I’m a 4½-year-old yellow Lab, and people say I’m a *gentle giant*. I weigh about 95 pounds, but inside I’m really just a big softy with a waggy tail and a heart that loves deeply.

I’ve had a good life so far. I was brought home as a puppy, and I grew up surrounded by love, playtime, and sunshine in the backyard. I never thought that would change… but sometimes life has other plans. My family is moving to a place where I can’t go with them, and now I’m hoping — with all the hope a dog can hold — that someone out there is looking for a boy like me.

Here’s what you should know about me:
✨ I’m house-trained, crate-trained, and know my manners.
✨ I can “sit,” “stay,” “shake,” and even “go potty” on command!
✨ I love chasing a ball, going for walks, or just curling up next to you for a nap.
✨ I get along with people and other dogs — I’m friendly through and through.
✨ Cats? Oh boy, I can’t help myself — I just want to chase them, so a cat-free home would be best.

My foster mom says I’m a “big love bug.” It’s true. I follow her around because new places make me a little unsure, but I feel safe when I’m near my people. At night, I settle into my crate and sleep peacefully. I do have a goofy side too — like when I steal towels off the floor or turn random things into my toys. I promise I’ll keep you laughing!

I’m happiest when I’m outdoors, moving, and exploring. I dream of finding an active family who wants to take me hiking, play fetch with me, and go on adventures together. I’d love older kids or teens to run around with — I’m a big boy, so I don’t want to accidentally knock down the little ones.

The important stuff: I’m neutered, microchipped, up to date on my vaccines, and heartworm negative. I do take medicine for seasonal allergies, but otherwise, I’m healthy and ready to go.

I’m currently living with my foster family on the mid-Peninsula (Belmont/Menlo Park), but what I really want is a forever home… *my home.*

So here I am, asking with all the love in my heart: will you be the one to give me my happily ever after?

If you think we’re meant to be, please email Rescue Rep Katy at [email protected] and tell her about you.

I promise — if you give me your love, I’ll give you mine a hundred times over. Forever. 🐾💛

🐾 Meet Sweet Bubba – Everyone’s Favorite Teddy Bear 🐾

Bubba is a 9-year-old Black Lab with the heart of a puppy and the soul of a best friend. He’s been with the same loving family since he was just a tiny ball of fur. He grew up side-by-side with kids who are now teenagers, went on countless daily walks, and soaked up every ounce of love his people gave him.

But recently, Bubba’s world was shaken. His mom—the person he adored most—passed away. And now, as the family prepares to move, they can’t take both of their dogs with them. With heavy hearts, they hope to find Bubba a new family who will love him just as much as they do.

💛 Why You’ll Love Bubba...
Bubba is the ultimate family dog. He’s gentle and sweet with children, goofy and playful when it’s time to romp, and affectionate when it’s time to cuddle. At 80 pounds, he’s a big teddy bear who just wants to be near his people. True to his Lab nature, he LOVES the water, loves attention, and has a way of making everyone around him smile.

He does have his tender spots—fireworks and loud noises make him nervous—but that just means he’ll be extra grateful to have you close by.

💬 His Family Says:
“Bubba is such a loving dog. He’s playful, loyal, and sometimes a big baby—but in the best way. We will miss him dearly and just want him to find a family that will love him the way we always have.”

🌟 What He Needs Most
Bubba still has plenty of energy and would thrive with an active family who enjoys walks, adventures, and maybe even a swim buddy. He’s crate-trained, house-trained, and happiest when he’s included in family life. He’ll need someone steady on their feet for walks (he’s strong!) and a home where he’s not left alone for long stretches.

🐶 Bubba has lived peacefully with the family’s Husky mix but hasn’t been around cats. Like many Labs, he’s a bit of a food explorer (yes, he’ll check counters and garbage if you’re not careful).

💉 Health Notes
Bubba is neutered, current on vaccines, and will be seeing the vet for a full check-up soon. He has a couple of skin tags and a harmless fatty lump on his chest, plus some ears that need watching since he loves to swim.

📍 Location: San Jose, CA

✨ Bubba is ready for his next chapter—a chapter filled with love, laughter, and family. Could that be with you?

If you’d like to meet Bubba, email Rescue Rep Kris at [email protected]
and please share a little about yourself and why Bubba would be the perfect fit in your home.

Training Tips
How to Create House Rules for your New Puppy

Below are highlights.

Entire article: https://www.akc.org/expert-advice/training/how-to-create-house-rules-for-your-new-puppy/

Dogs have their own natural behaviors, not all of which will be acceptable in their new household, and some behaviors could even be dangerous, destructive, or unhealthy. By creating a set of house rules, you’ll be letting your puppy know, right from the beginning, what is and is not acceptable.

This is all new for the puppy. They have to adjust to new owners and a new environment. If everyone in the family is consistent with rules, it will help the dog learn exactly what you expect of them, and what they can expect of you. The best way to do this is by creating house rules for your puppy ahead of time.

How Do I Create House Rules?

All family members should sit down and figure out the house rules together. Just as when you define expectations for your kids, consistency is key, and if the whole family agrees on the rules, it’s more likely they’ll stick to them.

Rules to Consider

1 Where will you allow the puppy to go in the house?

2 Will you let your dog on the furniture?

3 Decide on a morning and evening routine

House Rules for Humans

1 Children must learn how to handle a puppy.

2 Let the puppy eat in peace.

3 Do not hit/yell at your puppy.

Bringing a new puppy into the home is a real game-changer: the depth of your feelings for him and the joy he adds to your life may surprise you. You can facilitate a happy homecoming and an easier adjustment if you create and stick to some basic house rules from the very beginning. Your relationship with your dog will thrive on sensible, consistent guidelines.

Health Tips - Mushroom Poisoning

Entire Article: https://www.akc.org/expert-advice/nutrition/can-dogs-eat-mushrooms-3/

If your dog has ingested a wild mushroom, contact your vet, animal poison control center, or emergency vet hospital immediately.

While only a small percentage of mushrooms are toxic, the ones that are toxic are very toxic. They are also often difficult to distinguish from non-toxic varieties, so vets recommend treating all wild mushrooms as potentially toxic and a vet emergency.

Dogs explore by scent/taste. Some varieties of toxic mushrooms, like the death cap have a fishy odor. Dogs find fishy odors attractive.

Unless you are a mycologist, vets caution against trying to identify the mushroom yourself. Instead urge clients to bring their dogs in for treatment.

There are a few wild mushrooms that seem to cause the most problems:

Amanita phalloides (death cap), Galerina marginata (deadly Galerina), Amanita gemmate (jeweled deathcap), Amanita muscaria (fly agaric/Deadly Agaric), Gyromitra spp. (false morel), Inocybe spp. and Clitocybe dealbata

Symptoms of mushroom poisoning depend on the mushroom.

Amanita mushrooms contain amanitin toxins. These cause severe GI symptoms, a false recovery period where the dog seems to feel better, then liver failure, acute kidney injury, and death.

Other types of Amanita mushrooms cause sedation, tremors, “walking drunk,” seizures, and the false morel causes profuse vomiting/diarrhea, but is usually not fatal.

Other types of mushrooms simply cause GI upset.

Common symptoms of mushroom poisoning:
Vomiting, Diarrhea, Salivation, Weakness, Lethargy, Ataxia (staggering gait), Coma, Seizures, Liver failure, Abdominal pain, Death

Toxic effects of mushrooms can depend on any underlying condition your dog may have, or on a combination of ingested substances.

Treatment options for mushroom poisoning depend on the type of mushroom, symptoms, how recently the mushroom was ingested. If you have a sample of the mushroom, wrap it in a damp paper towel stored in a paper bag; bring it in to your vet.

Your vet may induce vomiting if ingestion was recent, and in some cases may give drugs to counteract the toxin.

Good Byes are HARD! Losing a pet is losing a dear family member! RIP dear boy!! You were loved and will be missed!

This is what Gumbeaux's mom shared with us today.

It is with great sadness that I share the news that our beloved dog Gumbeaux has passed away. He was 12 years and 10 months old - just two months shy of turning 13.

Diagnosed with Addison’s disease at the age of five, he fought bravely for seven years.

I am deeply grateful to Gumbeaux for giving us so many years together, and proud of our family for supporting him all along the way.

In the end, it was not Addison’s disease but kidney failure that took his life. He was truly a wonderful soul—loving, gentle, and always by our side. Losing him is an immense sorrow, but I also feel we did everything we could for him. I find comfort in knowing we were able to send him off with love.

We will always be thankful to the GGLRR for bringing Gumbeaux into our lives.

Pretty Mia needs a soft place to land (just 5 days) 🖤

Look at that sweet face. Mia is a 9-month-old Lab mix who survived being hit by a car in mid-August. She’s healing beautifully from femur and pelvis fractures and is currently safe in a Napa foster home. But her foster has a short trip coming up, so Mia needs a temporary foster from Wed, Sept 10 through Mon, Sept 15 (5 days).

Why Mia will melt your heart...

Velvety black coat, soulful eyes, and the gentlest “please love me” head tilt.

Total people-pleaser—she wants to be near you and soaks up pets.

Wiggly, happy, goofy puppy energy (with activity restrictions while she heals)

Kid-friendly, dog-curious, cat-curious (nose-to-nose with confident cats; wants to play if they run)

Soft mouth taking meds, sleeps in an x-pen at night

What a 5-day foster looks like

- Rest & chill: short potty breaks only; mostly lounging in an x-pen, crate, or on a bed beside you

- Basics in progress: house-training, leash confidence, learning simple cues

- Chew support: she’s a puppy—give her approved chew toys and guard those chair legs 😅

- Love & reassurance: she’s weaning off calming meds; your calm presence helps
___________________________________
Medical: Vaccinated, microchipped; re-check x-rays scheduled for late September.

Location: Napa (temp foster ideally nearby).

🐾 4 Chocolate Lab Puppies – 14 Weeks Old – Fosters Needed 🐾
3 Males • 1 Female

These four sweet chocolate bundles are waiting for someone to open their heart and home. At just 14 weeks old, they’re in that magical stage of life where every moment is full of discovery—splashing in water, digging little holes in the garden, curling up on the couch, and running straight into your arms with all the love they can give.

Their mom and dad are purebred chocolates, and their owner reached out to GGLRR for help because she wanted something better than a shelter life for them. She’s cared for them with so much love—playing, training, crate training, and even starting them on simple commands. But now, they’re ready for their next chapter: a foster home to guide them until they’re adopted into forever families.

💛 About the Puppies:
They’re sweet, playful, friendly, and full of energy (as all puppies are!). They’ll eat, play, p**p, p*e, nap—and repeat. It’s a whirlwind of joy and a bit of chaos, but so rewarding if you have the time and patience. They’ll need someone around often, someone who understands that puppies may keep you up at night, chew on things they shouldn’t, and require a lot of attention—but in return, they’ll give you unconditional love, laughter, and those puppy cuddles that melt your heart.

🩺 Medical Care:
They’ve been wormed, had two rounds of shots, baths, and GGLRR will handle their last vaccines plus spay/neuter when the time comes.

📍 Location:
Currently in Forestville, but we’d love to bring them closer to the Bay Area where they can meet the right families.

✨ Can You Help?
If you’ve ever thought about fostering, this is your chance to change a puppy’s whole world. Even a short time in your care helps them grow into confident, happy dogs who will go on to complete a family.

If you’re interested in fostering or adopting, please reach out to Rescue Rep Liz at [email protected].

Because every puppy deserves a safe place to land, and maybe—just maybe—you’re the one they’ve been waiting for. 🐶💖

Sweet Honeybee, a gentle 3-year-old chocolate Lab mix, found herself in an unexpected place this summer. She had wandered to a fire station in Modesto, curious and perhaps searching for kindness, when animal control brought her safely into the shelter on July 16. It was soon clear that Honeybee carried a secret—she was .

And though the shelter was noisy and cold, this brave mama gave birth on July 28 to four perfect little lives, three sons and one daughter, each a gift she brought into the world with quiet courage.

Lab Rescue welcomed Honeybee and her newborns into loving arms in early August, placing them in a Tiburon foster home where they could finally know softness, safety, and sunshine.

Their foster calls them a “delightful puppy pile,” and it’s true—each one is a small universe of sweetness and possibility.
✨ Moose, the chocolate boy with downy fur and soulful eyes, is the gentle giant, a mama’s boy who melts into every cuddle. He sings out when he longs for love, then happily drifts into naps on the cool grass.
✨ Wren, his chocolate sister, mirrors her mother’s grace—sleek, strong, and endlessly affectionate. She burrows into blankets and arms alike, a cozy little spirit who greets life with gentle determination.
✨ Bo, the tiniest black pup, is full of sparkle. His curious nature sends him hopping like a bunny across the yard, quick and spirited, always ready for play, yet never too busy to pause for snuggles.
✨ Finn, his black-furred brother, is the quiet dreamer with soft fur and big ears. He observes the world with careful eyes, joining in only when he feels ready. Mellow yet affectionate, Finn’s heart beats steady and true.

Raising young Lab puppies is both joy and challenge, like caring for newborns. They will need families who are home often, ready for the rhythm of eat, play, nap, repeat—and prepared for sharp little teeth, boundless energy, and the tender work of guiding them into the big dogs they will soon become.

Healthy, dewormed, and growing stronger each day, Honeybee’s four treasures are waiting in Tiburon for the families meant to love them forever.

Lab Rescue is looking for more fosters. We hope you’ll consider fostering a dog. We’ll be sharing stories from our GGLRR fosters to give you an idea of what it’s like to foster dogs and why people continue to foster dogs long term. The stories will warm your heart.

The details, an informative video and a foster form are available on our website: https://labrescue.org/fostering.html

Rescue Foster Kris shares her thoughts:

My experience fostering with GGLRR has been the best! They provide lots of support, supplies, and flexibility. I am a single woman who grew up with dogs, but as an adult with a busy schedule, did not feel it was fair to own a pet. But 11 years ago, I was home more and wanted the joy of having a dog. Now, 42 foster dogs later, it was the greatest decision I have ever made.

🐾 Meet Panther! 🐾
1-year-old Black Lab Mix • ~50 lbs • Neutered

If joy had four legs, floppy ears, and a wagging tail… it would look a lot like Panther! At just over a year old, this goofy, happy boy is packed with love, playfulness, and sunshine energy. He’s the kind of pup who makes every day feel brighter.

✨ His Story
Panther was adopted from the San Jose shelter as a tiny puppy and has grown up in a loving home. Sadly, his family is moving to the East Coast and can’t bring him along. They asked GGLRR to help this sweet guy find the forever family he deserves.

💌 From His Family
“Panther is the happiest puppy in the Bay Area! He loves belly rubs, playtime, and just being with people. He’s totally house-trained (yes, he’ll patiently wait until you get home!) and has the gentlest, most noble heart. No aggression, just love. He knows all his basics—sit, stay, come, no—and even our silly favorite: ‘Who did this?’ He’s fun, goofy, and the perfect buddy for an active family who wants a loyal best friend.”

🐶 From His Rescue Rep
Panther is affectionate, people-focused, and eager to learn. He sits politely, takes treats gently, and is working hard on his manners. Like any young Lab, he’s still learning impulse control and gets super excited when he sees other dogs. With an experienced adopter who can keep up his training, Panther will thrive.

He currently plays with two large dogs in his apartment complex, and we think he’d do great with a calm, confident dog friend to show him the ropes. (Cats? Still a mystery.)

Panther LOVES walks, though he’ll need a bit more leash practice because he just can’t resist wanting to greet every pup he sees. He’s house-trained, crate training is coming along, and while he’s been known to nibble on his bed when left alone too long, he’s otherwise respectful of his space.

🎾 Panther is pure enthusiasm—he may pull or jump when excited, but it’s all out of love. He’s gentle enough for kids, but because of his size and zest, we recommend families with children 10+. A home with a yard and people who won’t leave him alone for too long would make him the happiest boy. Structure, attention, and playtime are his jam!

🩺 Medical
Neutered, vaccinated, and healthy. Heartworm test pending soon.

📍 Location
Panther is being fostered in El Cerrito.

🐾 Panther is ready to bring endless tail wags, cuddles, and goofy grins to his forever family. Could that be you?
