Foster needed for 6-month-old 40-lb male chocolate Lab "Canelo"

We need to get Canelo out of the vet hospital and with a foster.

Background.   This pup was recently hit by a car.  The top of the bone (the femoral head) in his rear left leg was fractured.  His owners could not afford the needed medical treatment, so they surrendered Canelo to a vet hospital in San Mateo.  Surgery has been performed to repair the fracture and he is now in medical boarding at the vet hospital... waiting for us to find a foster for him.

Canelo - before surgery -- https://youtube.com/shorts/PYc5NYoUYv0

Canelo post-surgery walking around -- https://youtube.com/shorts/kPmZvpIOzw8

What Canelo's Rescue Rep says.  We need a quiet foster home with few steps and a relatively flat backyard for Canelo.   He is quite ambulatory... but he must be restricted in his activity -- spending most of his time in a crate and x-pen.  Outside to backyard just to p*e and p**p... then back into the crate.   Another dog in the home would be fine so long as the dogs are kept from engaging, romping, and playing.  Canelo has exhibited some food-guarding and crate-guarding so his foster will have to take it slow and easy.  Our vet believes that Canelo responds best to people who have a high-pitched voice.

Medical.  Canelo is recovering from that fractured rear leg, but otherwise healthy.  He has not yet been neutered.

If you can foster Canelo, please contact Rescue Rep Dave at [email protected]

There are times when your dog might surprise you by eating far less dog food than expected or by wanting far more. Learn what to watch out for to make sure your dog has healthy eating habits.

Feeding a Finicky Dog

If your pet sniffs her bowl then rejects all but a few bites, analyze their behavior. Here are some questions to ask to gauge finicky behavior.

Is your dog getting treats throughout the day that suppress their appetite?

If so, talk frankly with those handing out the treats about the adverse impact of their good intentions. Assure them that your dog’s food provides all the nutrition needed.

Is your dog sick?

If this is the first time your pet has missed a meal or is avoiding regular play and seems disengaged from what normally interests them, they may be sick. Dental disease, when severe, can make dogs stop eating in addition to other health concerns. Write down the details and talk to your veterinarian so they can diagnose the problem.

Are you overfeeding your dog?

Your dog might be eating all they need and leaving the rest alone. Check to make sure your portions are on target.

Feeding a Dog That Always Wants More

If your dog still seems hungry after they've eaten the proper serving size, it’s important to understand why. Some questions to consider are:

Is your dog getting the right kind of nutrition to satisfy their appetite?
Dog food that is not complete and balanced may be lacking in nutrients and might not provide what they need to be healthy and satisfied.

Are you feeding your dog enough?
If, for example, you've taken up running and your dog joins you, they may need more calories. Review the feeding guidelines on the dog food package or consult your vet to determine how much food you should serve.

Sophie   12-year-old female yellow Lab     70 lbs.   Spayed

Background.  Sophie had been with her family since she was a puppy, but didn't appreciate the recent addition of a 1-year-old baby.  The family reluctantly made the decision to find Sophie a new home.

For videos/more details: https://labrescue.org/labs/Sophie2024-06.html

What Sophie's former owner says.  Sophie’s disciplined, play motivated.  House-broken, used a crate in the past, but not crated now.  Sophie is only alone for a few hours each day, but she can be left in the house alone for up to 6 hours.  Good on leash, knows a few commands.  Doesn't appreciate dogs coming to meet her.  Will snap at other dogs if they come up to her, will avoid other dogs.  Arthritis in her back legs/hips hinders her mobility a little.  Likes to ride in the car/swim.  Has arthritis in her hind legs, a few lipomas on her stomach.  She walks fine but if she runs, will typically limp afterwards.  We keep her play time limited to leash walks.

What our evaluator says.  Sophie is mobile/responsive.   Has arthritis/skin issues. She’s been well cared for/happy.  She doesn’t frequent dog parks, so we took our dog Lucky to meet her.  Was comfortable with Lucky, wouldn’t recommend a foster with young dogs.  The lipomas on her belly appear to be minor.  Arthritis in her right hip doesn’t slow her down!

What Sophie's foster says.  Sophie is a lively 12-year-old cutie! Very well behaved.  Excited when company comes but calms down.  The vet has said no balls for Sophie because it affects her existing arthritis and causes her to limp after playing.  She enjoys a daily 30-min walk, long hikes not advisable.

What Sophie's Rescue Rep says.  Sophie is happy to hang with her p*eps, go on a few short walks daily.  Best that Sophie go to a home with no children other young dogs.  Older chill dogs might be just fine.  No idea about cats.

Medical.  Current on vax, heartworm neg, spayed, chipped.  Appears in good health.

Located in:  Petaluma.

If you are interested in Sophie, please contact Rescue Rep Dave at [email protected].

Fluffy      12-year-old female yellow Lab mix       71 lbs.      Spayed

Background.  Fluffy's owner passed away in early 2024... Fluffy was then relegated to the backyard where she was left alone, pretty much abandoned for the next 6 months.  She received little food/water in her solitary confinement.  During this isolation, she lost weight, was inundated with fleas... and over the months was in the backyard, she lost much of her fur.  Well, the family resolved to sell the house and contacted us to take Fluffy -- the day before the house was sold.  After a brief stop at Pet Food Express for a needed overdue bath, we now have her settled into a foster home and on the road to recovery.

See https://www.labrescue.org/labs/Fluffy2024-11.html for videos/more details.

What Fluffy's current foster says.  Fluffy is rebounding from her miserable experience.  Her skin infections/ailments are resolving nicely.  I am delighted to hear her snoring soundly.  Housetrained.  Sleeps through the night.  Loves to have her ears/chin scratched.  The fleas have "left the building"; her itching is significantly reduced, skin/fur are returning to normal.

What Fluffy's Rescue Rep says.  What a wonderful lady who has fallen on hard times.  Fluffy is on a steady road to recovery.  She would do best in a quiet home where she can continue to recuperate.  Fluffy will reward her caretaker with affection.  No idea how she is with cats, but she has taken to playing with Blackjack, one of my other foster dogs.  I would guess that she's a Lab/shepherd mix.  Older dogs deserve comfortable homes to live out their golden years.

Medical.  Spayed; current on vax; Heartworm neg.  Skin/fur are recovering from long-term flea dermatitis, bacteria, yeast infection.  Weekly medicated shampoo baths, orals meds are in her current wellness plan.  Our vet also found her to be hypothyroid, taking daily thyroxin pill.  Has arthritis in her back legs/hips, walks pretty stiff; trying to restore some muscle to her backside.  Will be getting on pain-reliever/anti-inflammatory soon.

Located in Placerville

Atticus: 4 year-old intact male, white Lab mix, 75 lbs.

Background:
Atticus was brought into the Sonoma County Animal Shelter on September 14 as a stray with no microchip and sadly nobody has come for him. The Shelter contacted GGLRR to help get him out of that environment and into a loving home.

What Atticus' Foster says:
Atticus has been a wonderful dog as a foster so far, no accidents in the house, very quiet, travels well in the car, good hiking buddy, wants to be with people, settles easily, not ball-crazy, and accepting of our two cats. He's going to make some family very happy!

What Atticus' Rescue Rep says:
Atticus is a gentle soul who thrives on human touch and attention. This sweet boy has come a long way since arriving at the shelter becoming less timid and is quite comfortable approaching new people. Atticus greets you with a soft, trusting approach, happy to be petted and handled with ease. With other dogs, he’s curious but mellow—calmly meeting a small, female dog without showing a strong need to engage and is good around cats. Atticus appears to be house trained and walks wonderfully on a leash. While he’s interested in toys, he’s all about companionship. Atticus would likely do best in a relaxed home with older children and possibly other calm dogs. If you’re looking for a loyal friend to add warmth and love to your home, Atticus may be the perfect fit.

• Atticus' amazing leash walking skills: https://youtu.be/jTHYcgNEtDg
• Atticus meeting another dog: https://youtube.com/shorts/32CCe1uaaL4?feature=share

Medical:
Atticus is still intact but we are working to get him neutered. Otherwise he seems healthy and has had all his vaccines. He is heartworm negative, has been microchipped and is on flea/tick/heartworm preventatives.

Atticus is located in: Los Gatos.

If you are interested in adopting Atticus please contact Rescue Rep Kathy ([email protected]). Tell her about yourself and why you would be a good fit for Atticus.

ACCEPTING NO MORE CALLS
Nine puppies have joined the GGLRR program

Background. Chocolate young female Lab "Molly" gave birth to nine healthy puppies on Halloween. Not tricks here. A total treat! We think dad was a chocolate Lab too. Molly is currently focused on nursing her squeaky pups. We have six male puppies (3 chocolate, 3 yellow) and three female puppies (1 chocolate, 2 yellow).

Nine squeaky 3-day-old puppies -- https://youtu.be/IzWfUquQVOc

What the puppies' Rescue Rep says. Lab Rescue is delighted to have teamed with Dog 4 Diabetics (D4D) in Concord for Molly's whelping and the follow-on puppy care. The D4D team has been incredibly attentive and professional in their handling and 24x7 care of Molly and her puppies. Of course, the focus right now is allowing Molly to nurse her nine charges, monitoring their grown and health, and ensuring Molly is receiving enough nutrition for both herself and the puppies. So far, Molly has shown to be a fabulous mama dog. Incredible! The puppies are not yet up for adoption as we want to focus on them nursing and growing and developing. We anticipate posting them up for adoption in late November... with the goal of having them in their new forever homes right around Christmas.

Medical. All nine puppies appear to be in fine health. They are nursing well and steadily gaining weight.

MOOSE (5-Year-old Neutered Male, 89 Pounds)

Background: Moose and Mia, formerly Zeus and Zia,  came to Lab Rescue via Susanville after a livestock rescue volunteer was alerted about 2 dogs left abandoned in a backyard. The volunteer was able to reach their owner who had relocated and told her to "just shoot them." She made a daily trip to feed/water these 2 for weeks while she searched for rescue and was connected to one of GGLRR's fosters. Long story short, a village banded together to rescue them (livestock rescue volunteer, vet, boarding facility in Susanville, volunteer pilot, GGLRR). Sadly, we had to euthanize Mia at the end of October as she stopped eating. An emergency trip to the vet revealed she had a mass, likely cancerous, and inoperable.

From Moose's Foster:  Moose is a sweet, smart goofy guy.  Has great house manners, walks nicely on leash, sleeps well through the night, loves to meet/hang out with people.   He loves to chase 2 tennis balls at the same time so he can bring them both back in the same mouthful.  Moose is deaf.  I’ve been teaching him hand signals.

Moose is a wonderful fella, easy to live with.  His ideal situation would be an active home with another dog from whom to pick up cues.  For anyone who wants to do a deep dive about deaf dogs, check out “ The Complete Guide to Owning a Deaf Dog” by Amanda Bradley.  Moose also comes with an in-person training session with me.

From Moose's Rescue Rep:  Moose is a loving, resilient dog. Having been abandoned, he needs a home where he will be a cherished member of the family. Moose exhibits the lovable Lab qualities of sweetness, a laid-back nature.  We think Moose would do best in a home with another canine sibling. Mia was older than Moose but provided calm guidance. Cats unknown.

Medical: Neutered, chipped, updated on vax. Heartworm/fecal tested (neg). On flea/tick/heartworm preventative. Appears to have hearing loss.

Located in: San Jose

If you are interested in adopting Moose, contact Rescue Rep Kris at [email protected]. Tell her what city you reside in, a bit about yourself/dog experience, why you would be a good fit

Winnie: Approximate 1 Year-Old Spayed Female Black Lab Mix, 58 Pounds

Background:
Winnie made her way to GGLRR after being picked up as a stray by the shelter in Hollister. Winnie had been there for some time with no interest. They reached out to GGLRR for help as they were at capacity.

What Winnie's Foster Says:
Winnie is a sweet but jumpy girl. She loves attention, learning not to jump. Has a gentle mouth; walks good on leash. Crate-trained.  Eager to please.

Winnie wrestling with her foster brother:

https://www.youtube.com/shorts/v2ObWhwHtFw

What Lab Rescue Says:
Upon meeting Winnie at the shelter, I met a young, friendly, jumpy Lab mix.

Having been at the shelter for a while, she was excited when we met. Her first instinct was to greet me with jumps. Once outside, I had to brace myself against the fence as she would occasionally break her zoomie routine to jump up for attention.

Initially, walking her was a challenge due to her jumping.  Calmed down enough for me to walk her around the yard without jumping. Enjoys pets/handling (checking her ears, teeth, paws, tail).

Winnie interacted positively with a small chihuahua. Did well with a large, energetic male dog. Very treat-motivated, showed no signs of resource guarding.

Has been in a foster home with 3 canine foster siblings: 2 males/1 female. Doesn't get along with the female. It appears they are both vying for their human mom's attention. We plan to take Winnie for a doggie daycare eval to determine if she has issues with other females.

Will require an active home that will provide her with exercise/structure. We would like to see Winnie in a home where a family will work with her to hinder her jumping, where she won't be left alone for long stretches of the day, a large yard to run.  No small children due to jumping/zoomie sessions. Does well with male dogs. Female dogs/cats unknown.

Medical Information:
Spayed, chipped. Up to date on vax, recent neg heartworm test.

Located in: San Jose

If you are interested in Winnie, please email Rescue Rep Kris  [email protected]. Tell her about yourself/why you would be a good fit for Winnie.

Millie: Approximate 1 Year Old Female Black Lab Mix, 50 lbs, Spayed.

Millie and 2 other dogs (siblings?) were found in a park in Modesto, likely dumped. A good Sam picked them up and took them to her house. We brought all three dogs into the program. Millie was pregnant. Thankfully, her foster stepped up in the nick of time so Millie could deliver her pups indoors protected from the harsh 100 degree temps that hit Modesto.

Millie did an excellent job taking care of her puppies. All have been adopted!

Here's what Millie's Foster Says:
Millie was the BEST mama ever!   Even though we think she was barely 10-11 months when she delivered her babies, she took such great care of them! Her pups all have her sweet dispositions.

Millie is one of the most social dogs I have ever had, foster or my own!   I have many friends who visit with their dogs. She has not met a single one she didn't welcome with open paws!   She's going to be very happy in a home with other dogs!

She's housetrained, sleeps in a large crate, but I'm sure she'd love to be sleeping in someone's bed.  No toy/food resource guarding! Cautious around new people, but warms up with coaxing.  Could use basic training, but that's a great bonding tool for new owners.  In great shape, loves to run, learning to catch a ball...her coat looks like black satin, a very pretty, really nice sized dog.

I don’t have small children in my circle, but I imagine she could learn to love them too.  Doesn't seem to have a mean bone in her body;  she's not been very socialized with people.

What Lab Rescue Says:

Millie will need a patient adopter to help expose her to the world around her. Working with a trainer will also be helpful. We think she would thrive in a home with another dog/dogs. Millie is sweet but timid.

Medical Information:
Current on Rabies, Distemper/Parvo, heartworm neg, chipped spayed.

Located in: Walnut Creek

If you are interested in adopting Millie, contact Rescue Rep Kris at [email protected]

Beau - 15-month-old male yellow Lab mix - 35 lbs. - Not yet neutered

Background.  Beau is currently with a dog trainer in Dixon.  Beau's previous owners found that he was not a good fit for their busy household, surrendered him to their dog trainer.  Beau has received substantial training.  Has “stranger danger",  especially towards men.  Takes a while for Beau to warm up to people, but when he does, he's an absolute delight.

Beau knows sit, stay - https://youtu.be/NIfgct17KUE?si=9MRkKfQXsrA8Vh9c

What Beau's trainer says.  It has been a pleasure watching Beau develop/grow over these last few months.  When he arrived he had had little exposure to the outside world, was terrified.  Through careful training, socialization, confidence building, Beau has matured into a happier dog.  Still needs patience/consistency but in the right home I am certain he will thrive.  Food-motivated.  He’s nervous of new people, needs time to adjust.  Once he trusts you, you’ll have a friend for life.  Loving/affectionate with people he knows but it's vital that he isn’t pushed into social situations that he is not ready for.  Loves going on walks/hanging out at your side. Comfortable around cats/livestock.  Beau is a fan of other dogs, when he’s with his canine friends you will absolutely see his personality blossom. Would do best in a home with a confident dog that can help ease his worries when unsure.  The ideal home would be quiet without many visitors. He is great on a leash, will walk by your side, although he would be most comfortable in a less urban setting.

What Beau's Rescue Rep says.  Beau is a wonderful dog but will require a calm quiet home with understanding/patient owners.  Not ideal for a home with children due to his skittishness.  Not a city dog.  Crate/house-trained.  DNA reveals Beau is part Lab, part cocker spaniel, a mix of other breeds. He is on the small size when it comes to Labs.  Likely fully grown.  Would thrive in a home with another dog.

Medical.  In fine health.  Current - Rabies/distemper vax.  Needs to be neutered/chipped.

Located in:  Dixon.

If you want to adopt Beau, contact Rescue Rep Dave at [email protected]

Casper - 2-year-old 85-lb male Great Pyrenees mix needs a new home

We believe a farm/ranch would be ideal for him.  He would do great under the tutelage of an existing LGD.

We took in Casper's mother, a Great White Pyrenees, and siblings last year.  We were told that the father was a Lab which turned out not to be the case.  Casper is 50% Great White Pyrenees.

Casper's current foster says, Casper is a big fluffy guy with a “bubbly personality, gentle, loyal companion.  Casper’s favorite outing is to go hiking with our dog Cheyenne.  Does well riding in the truck. Casper also likes to play tug-o-war and fetch with his toys and has made great progress with leash walking.  Casper sleeps in the crate.  When we get ready for bed, Casper will head to his crate.  Casper gets along well with our female lab Cheyenne.  Casper will do well with a family that has another dog companion who will be a great mentor to him.  Casper is a big dog so experience with a large dog is recommended.  Casper will become a loyal companion with patience/training.

Casper is an intelligent/affectionate dog, will thrive in a loving, structured environment.  He should start with a local trainer to continue building his foundation.  Has made great progress since moving into a foster home.  The fosters have been working with a canine behaviorist, remotely, New Hope Behavior Consultants for the Guardians who specializes in livestock guardian breeds.  Casper became an almost instant High Achiever and made the “Wall of Fame” on their website.

One of our volunteers recently dog-sat Casper for a week while his fosters were out of town.  She said, "Casper is an awesome dog!  Casper walks well on a front attach harness, though his youthful exuberance/protective instincts can sometimes come into play.  Prospective adopters should be comfortable handling a big dog.  My guess is that the reactivity would lessen as he builds more of a relationship with the handler.

Medical: up to date on core vax, heartworm neg, chipped, neutered.

Lady is on her way to a new adventure! 🐾🐾. More to come on Lady's story.

Lady   18-month-old female silver Lab     55 lbs     Spayed

Background.  Originally surrendered by her owner who was going into the hospital, Lady was at the Stockton shelter for two months before joining the Lab Rescue program.

For full details: https://labrescue.org/labs/Lady2024-10.html

What Lady's foster says.  Lady is a young lab with a silver coat.  She is 55 lbs. of cheerful joy.  That’s why I call her Lady Loulou Smokeypants.  At almost 1 ½ years old, she is still very much a puppy.  She underestimates her girth/surprises herself each time she rolls off the couch mid-snore.  She loves to go for walks and is getting used to being on a gentle leader.  She is somewhat curious to explore but doesn’t want to stray far from her human.  She follows me around, inside the house and yard.  She has recently graduated from sleeping in her crate at night to being on the bed with me.    She enjoys car rides even though she is still getting the hang of getting in and out of the car.  Overall Lady is a moderately active dog.  She doesn’t pull on the leash. I’ve heard her bark only a few times, when startled by outside noises that were unfamiliar.  She will give kisses any chance she gets, without any prompting. Lady has full access to an enclosed yard/comes and goes as she wishes from the minute she wakes up to bedtime.  Because of her propensity to go to the bathroom in the yard, it would be best for her to have access to a safe yard.  Due to her strength/jumping agility, would do best as an only dog in a home with adults only/no cats.

What Lady's Rescue Rep says.  What a delightful young dog.  A handful but she will make for a wonderful family dog.  Has gotten along well with some dogs, but did have an expected spat with another dog at a boarding facility where she bit the other dog in the ear.  So Lady is not a dog park dog and would probably be best as an only dog.  Ideal candidate for obedience training/lots of exercise.  Would do best in a home with a large yard.
