Loose Leash Walking with a small dog!!!
Teaching any dog to walk next to you takes many small rewards. Every time I say YES -I am communicating to this dog that she was in the correct position.
Then I reach into my bait bag and give her a treat.
She weighs under 10 pounds and is less than 1 foot tall.
My lower back would be killing me if we did this with her on the ground.
So when we don’t have a Walter practice I use a front clipping harness.
This practice session was on her flat collar and she’s elevated on a wall for easy rewards that I don’t have to bend down to give.
Once the behavior is more established we can make the rewards more intermittent and she won’t need our practice wall.
It’s also really helps mitigate jumping up to collect the tree which is very tempting for such small dogs.

Part 2: This one is really windy so I edited the sound. Much better frequency of play signals.
This is just such excellent footage! Both male dogs are intact. The Ridgeback is three. The Leonberger is one. There is nothing wrong with humping but the Leo failed to give play signals before humping at the beginning of the video. As you watch you will see that he gets more slick and offers a variety of behaviors. Most importantly he starts to signal that his intention is play with hip checks and paw slaps. Play serves a purpose -it's how animals practice survival skills. Both of these males are play fighting & practicing their "please let me hump you" moves. 🐾
It's impossible for me to do these things without narrating it a stupid dog voice...
But this is a really good example of teaching the dog to give a Cut-off Cue and then honoring that cue. A platform is a wonderful tool for dogs with handling issues!!! It brings them up off the ground and gives them the ability to jump on when they are ready and leave when they are overstimulated.
#Ineffectiveuse #ineffectiveuseofbaitbag #painfultowatch #stillfunny @dominikameanssunday Can you talk to Larry & fix this? 😂😮😜 He stepped on a hotdog piece, I thought he was going to maybe practice "leave it," but he ground the hotdog like he was putting out a cigarette, when he lifted his foot the dog grabbed it off the bottom of his shoe. At least he didn't then correct the dog, just shook his head. #labradorproblems
Puppies are basically like having a drunk follow you around... They keep passing out, stumbling and stopping for no reason; they constantly need to pee; and their reaction time is terrible. 😜😝🐾❤
