Violet Horizons Farm

Violet Horizons Farm We sell handmade soap, cosmetics, clothing, accessories, blankets, and decorations. Our farm is one way we preserve this delicate balance in our lives.

We offer mobile pet and farm services, including hoof trimming, nail trimming, or wing clipping. Violet Horizons Farm began as the registered herd name for our Nigerian Dwarf dairy goats. As we continued to grow and expand, we decided to make this an official business. We use our goat milk to make goat milk soap, using high quality ingredients to produce a high quality product. In addition, we mak

e other cosmetics, such as lotion, lip balm, sugar scrub, and more, as well as knit and crochet projects, such as clothing items, accessories, blankets, and more. In a time when people are increasingly separated from nature, it is important to keep a connection. No matter how industrialized our society becomes, we still have a delicate connection to nature, and the animals residing in it. Besides producing milk from our goats and eggs from our chickens, we also have a garden where we grow our own vegetables. We strongly encourage others to do the same, in any way they can, and we will happily offer advice to help make this happen. Right now we do not sell food products, but in the future, as we continue to grow, we might offer home grown produce. A smaller part of our business is a mobile petting zoo. This means we bring the zoo to you. As cities become larger, many people see fewer animals. Our petting zoo helps to maintain that connection and build a greater appreciation for the animals that exist in this world. When you book our zoo, you can choose which animals are included, based on your needs, preferences, or location. At this time we are able to offer our goats, one mini big, chickens, ducks, turkeys, snakes, a bearded dragon, turtles, and tortoises. Pricing will vary depending on the length of the event and the animals included. By providing this service, we can bring these animals to people, and provide entertainment with education. While showing off these animals and allowing people to touch and even hold them, we will also discuss the ecology of these animals, their behavior and natural environment, as well as their relationships with people, both in captivity and in the wild, and other interesting facts. All of this will be done with entertainment in mind, to keep audiences engaged and make the experience memorable. Not everyone can travel to a zoo, and even when you can you rarely get to touch the animals and see them up close. This brings the zoo to you!

Latest results are in, our herd remains negative for CAE, CL, Johne's, and Q fever!

We run annual blood tests for disease surveillance and biosecurity. 100% of our herd over the age of 1 year is tested for CAE, CL, and Johne's. All potential breeding does over 1 year are also tested for Q fever. Additional testing throughout the year may occur if we are adding a new animal to our herd, by request from a buyer (at their expense), or other reasons.

Personal information blocked out, but results are direct from the lab. Full copy available by private request from buyers.

Our Story

We have always had a passion for the animals we raise, but also for a simple, yet comfortable life, centered around self-reliance. Much of this began with crafts and hobbies, such as knitting and crochet, sewing, wood working and more. Eventually we were able to buy a small plot of land, and from there our farm has developed. Starting with a couple horses (one of which was already in the family, but in a boarding situation) and chickens. Then came the goats, eventually quail, turkeys, waterfowl, and finally pigs. The future might see more additions, but in our current location we’re limited to what we have now.

All of our animals have a job. The chickens provide us with eggs, as do the turkeys and waterfowl. The quail are mostly kept as a meat source, though some of the other birds can be used as such too. The turkeys also make excellent bug control, while the waterfowl are great for controlling some w**ds. The goats were first brought on as milk-producing animals that can be kept on a small property. We started out with Nigerian dwarf goats, due to their small size, friendly nature, and attractiveness in general. The smaller size does mean lower milk production when compared to a full size breed, however we have found this production to be perfect for our family! Eventually we also added Boer goats, originally with the intent for pac and draft, and later with the intent for having another potential meat source (this is what the breed was originally developed for). The goats also provide a high quality fertilizer (as do the horses), as well as some w**d control. Finally, the pigs came on board, but are pets believe it or not! However, their rooting behavior means they can turn over and till the soil, and we intend to take full advantage of that! We have also found out pigs actually enjoy grazing, so we’re hoping they also help to provide w**d control, and then of course fertilizer.

Over the years we have dabbled in various home business ideas, as a bonus to our hobbies as well as for some small supplemental income to our regular professions. It is a lot of work, but it is also well worth it. This is where Violet Horizons was born! Through our “farm” we will provide a variety of homemade products, which have been carefully crafted from start to finish. Our primary products will include apparel, accessories, children’s and baby items, home decoration items, as well as soap and body care products. At times we may offer additional projects, such as wood items or refinished furniture. Occasional artwork or photography might also be available, and other odds and ends. If there is a particular item you see pictured anywhere on our page or website that you are interested in, do not hesitate to drop us a line! We are also learning how to spin fiber into wool, and eventually might incorporate hand-spun yarn into our products, and perhaps even experiment with hand-dying these fibers. You never know what to expect next in our pursuit of self-reliance!

Products are not the only thing we are offering though. We have a passion for animals, and we love to share that passion with others. We volunteer our time to various events in an attempt to bring the joy of animals to other people. Our hope is to also provide animals for therapy work, as well as educational presentations. Often people cannot fully connect with something until they experience it, and animals are no exception to this. While not everyone will come to love animals in the same way, everyone can learn to respect and appreciate them for what they are, and their place in the world. This is our goal in offering educational opportunities and participating in community events. For private events such as parties, we also offer a traveling petting zoo. At this time the only animals available for commissioned events are cold-blooded (reptiles, amphibians, and invertebrates), but we plant to pursue a USDA license to also offer our warm-blooded animals (goats, pigs, birds, and more) for commissioned events. Ultimately we have a dream to put together a program which not only connects people to animals, but also helps people to learn real-life applicable skills, such as sewing, perhaps also gardening and cooking. Our desire is to focus on providing this program to at-risk youth, give them a place to belong, learn, discover goals, and build their own dreams. We want to be a source of encouragement and support, and help others to achieve success. This dream is a long way off, but a goal we can work toward with every step of our adventure!
