I can’t say how many times I’ve heard “But my cat never leaves my yard and I have a 6 foot wall”. Well, your cat doesn’t need to leave your yard to be in danger. Coyotes can get over those 6 foot walls. Not to mention Hawks, Owls, Bobcats, and yes even Mountain Lions. Your small pets are considered a meal for all those predators. Who can blame them? Urban sprawl has taken over their territory and killed off their prey.
Keep your cats indoors 100% of the time. And always supervise your small dogs.

I refuse.

I refuse to let this young opossum’s last day be full of trauma, eating leaves, flies laying eggs on him, and injured legs.

I refuse to let his experience with humans be one of waiting in the grass for a more convenient time to rescue him. An injured or orphaned animal is seldom convenient.

I refuse to sit back and “let nature take its course.”

Nature isn’t a dog attacking an opossum. Nature isn’t a road cutting through a forested area. Nature isn’t a car hitting an animal, leaving them for dead. Nature isn’t a bait box of poison wreaking havoc on predators and mesopredators alike.

He has been cleaned up, medicated and is warming up in an incubator. He has reflexive movement in one of his legs. I will give him a couple of days and then make a very difficult decision if he doesn’t improve. Until then, he will be warm, safe, fed, hydrated, cared for and even loved.
