Leftie Returns Home!
REUNITED! In some parts of the country, nearly 1 in 4 people experiencing homelessness have pets. These pets not only provide companionship and emotional support (like all pets provide for their people), for the unhoused, they also can provide warmth and protection.
The bond between Leftie (dog) and his guardian is undeniable. They are inseparable - and...they're currently experiencing homelessness.
Protection is exactly what Leftie was providing to his guardian when he sustained a stab wound to the neck and was rushed to Rivco Animal Services. Our veterinary team rushed him into emergency surgery to save his life, and after a successful surgery, we continued his rehabilitation and pain management until he was cleared to go home a few days later.
But, reuniting Leftie was not going to be easy...
His guardian did not have a phone nor an address, so we had no way to contact her directly - but thanks to our dedicated Lost & Found team who was committed to getting Leftie back home, we were able to make contact with a Good Samaritan who knew Leftie and his person...and where we could find her.
Just 1 week after he arrived in our care, we were able to celebrate their reunion!!!
While Leftie was in our care, we also provided his full vaccinations and neuter surgery at no-cost, and transported him back into the arms of the person he loves most.
This story is a testament to the unbreakable bond between humans and their pets, and the incredible efforts of those who step up when it matters most - both within the Rivco Animal Services team and within the communities we serve.
Welcome home, Leftie! <3
"The unbreakable bond between a person and their pet brings us strength through love in the face of adversity. We are glad to have been able to reunite these two." -Supervisor Gutierrez, District 5

We are always grateful to work with partners who help us make space in our shelters. We are so excited to see these pets leave our shelter system and find their way to loving homes.

Riverside County Animal Services Partners With Wings Of Rescue To Transport 49 Dogs and 15 Cats
Riverside County Animal Services is one of the highest intake shelters in the U.S. and the heartbreaking reality is that local adoptions are not keeping up with the growing number of pets in need, so we are constantly seeking help from rescues and other shelters in and out of California. On January 19, 2025, Riverside County Animal Services teamed up with Wings of Rescue to fly 49 dogs and 15 cats to shelters out of state. Paws For Life K9 Rescue donated 100 crates to help with the transport. This collaboration is just one of many ways we’re partnering with animal welfare organizations to help re-home Riverside County’s homeless pets – locally and beyond…. but we still have hundreds of animals in our shelters who are waiting for their forever homes. @wingsofrescue_official @pawsforlifek9
----------------------------
