Who has got a yearning for some learning? We know these pups and kittens do!

Our new volunteer program, Pawsitive Readers, is an initiative that allows children from all ages to come down to our shelter and read to our shelter pets. The purpose of this program is to help develop reading skills while helping to calm animals and provide companionship. Our program will start January 22, 2025. We will hold this program every Wednesday from 3:30 - 4:30 p.m at the San Jacinto Valley Animal Campus at 581 S. Grand Ave. in San Jacinto.

If you would like to help, the animal shelter will be taking book donations to read to our pets. Hope to see you soon friends.

The Department of Animal Services set a goal at the beginning of the year – to save 5,000 more felines in its care during 2024. To meet this goal, the department is decreasing humane euthanasia of cats and significantly increasing transfers to rescue partners, paving the way for the department to near the goal of its 5,000 Cat Challenge.

Additionally, the agency is saving more cats through its pet support program, diverting cats into foster homes or providing critical low-cost or free spay and neuter surgeries for community cats.

“As a result of our collective efforts, more than 4,000 cats have been saved, which is approximately 80 percent of our goal,” said Supervisor Yxstian Gutierrez, Fifth District. “We are urging the public to help us reach this important milestone in the campaign’s final two months. If you can open your home to foster or adopt a cuddly cat, visit us today.”

The cuteness overload is here! Meet our friend Pip.

Pip came into the Western Riverside County/City Animal Shelter with his sister in July 2024 as 3 weeks old. A kind soul came into the shelter and decided to bottle feed the kittens. She worked very diligently to find homes for the two. Pip's sister was adopted by one of her friends, while Pip found his home with the person who was caring for them.

Pip is doing very well and is thriving. He loves his new mommy and will say hello with nose boops. Thank you so much for all your efforts to help Pip's sister a loving home and for opening your home up to Pip!

Hello friends, look like the wind is finally here!

With the windy season picking up, we wanted to share these helpful tips to keep your pups safe.

1. Check your fences and make sure all gates are locked so that they are not blown over allowing pets to escape.
2. Flying debris or wind gusts can scare or injure a pet. It is best to keep them inside as much as possible.
3. Keep pets on a leash when taking them out on a walk.
4. Make sure your pets are microchipped and wearing an ID tag in case they become lost.

At RCDAS, we want to ensure the health and well-being of all animals both in your care as well as our care.

Meet the Miracle Horse, Butter!

Butter crashed through a plywood-covered well 15 feet. The rescue started early afternoon Friday, November 1, 2024 and ended around 10 p.m.

In all efforts to save Butter, the water from the well was siphoned indicating that the well was actually 60 feet deep.

Rescuers initially feared such a drop would have killed or severely injured the horse. However, once rescuers raised the horse out of the well, Dr. Itzel Vizcarra of Riverside County Animal Services examined it on site and determined the horse didn’t appear to have any serious injuries.

“We were all amazed she came out without any major trauma,” Dr. Vizcarra said. “This was a huge team effort by many rescuers, so it’s uplifting to learn Butters will be OK.”

Butter is now back with her owner and was immediately taken to her regular veterinarian. The veterinarian stated Butters minor injuries were already healing up and looking good. This is quite the miracle!

Hey everyone, we had a paw-some outcome this past weekend!

On November 2, and November 3, 2024, the Riverside County Department of Animal Services participated in the Best Friends Super Adoption event at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, CA. The Best Friends Animal Society invited RCDAS as well as other shelters and rescues to bring some pups who are available for adoption.

Out of all the 20 that we brought over the 2 days, all 20 were adopted! How great is that! During this event, nearly 400 animals were adopted and found their furever home.

Thanks to our hard working counselor team for going above and beyond, the animals that were brought to the Super Adoption event were able to find a loving home!

Riverside County Animal Services conducted a sweep and education operation on Tuesday (Oct. 29) in the eastern Coachella Valley that resulted in almost 40 impounded dogs.

Sweep operations are historically performed in this region during a time of year when the temperatures are lower. Officers set up a staging area at approximately 5 a.m. to get an early start and to avoid the potential of heat-related injuries to stray dogs.

This year’s sweep wasn’t just about rounding up stray, at-large dogs, though. Officers also visited houses door to door and provided education about the importance of keeping the family dog inside its own property. Information about resources was also provided. And some officers conducted pet reunions in the field after an owner’s dog ended up on the truck.

“These sweeps are about making sure we’re protecting our communities, especially the younger residents as they prepare for Halloween fun,” Commander Sisler said.
