Starting a Grooming Salon? Don’t Skip These Essentials! ✂️🐶💨

1️⃣ Quality Tools & Backups – Invest in high-quality clippers, shears, and brushes, and keep them well-maintained! Always have an extra pair of thinners or sharp blades on hand—nothing slows you down like working with dull or broken tools.

2️⃣ Adjustable Grooming Table – Your table should go low enough for large or older dogs to step on easily (no lifting or risky jumps!) and high enough to maintain good posture while grooming. Your back will thank you!

3️⃣ Powerful & Adjustable Dryer – A strong dryer reduces brushing time, but it should also have adjustable speeds to accommodate nervous or sensitive dogs. The right dryer makes all the difference!

4️⃣ Accessible Tub with Riser – A ramp or electric lift saves your body from heavy lifting, and a riser for smaller dogs prevents unnecessary bending. Bathing should be easy on both you and the dogs!

5️⃣ Good Lighting – A bright workspace is key, especially when grooming darker-coated dogs. Good lighting not only helps with precision but also creates a welcoming and energetic environment for both groomers and clients.

6️⃣ Smart Booking & POS System – A good system minimizes phone time, especially for returning clients, so you can focus on new customers and understand their grooming needs. Some systems even integrate with POS and accounting tools to keep your business running smoothly!

7️⃣ Positive, Optimistic Attitude – Challenges will come—whether it’s difficult dogs, customer concerns, or staff issues—but the right mindset can turn any situation around. Stay positive, adaptable, and professional, and you’ll attract more loyal clients and a great team!

It’s a large dog kind-of-day 🐾❤️
St Bernard dogs 🐶 can weigh between 120-180lbs!

✴️ It’s very important to know how to handle these large dogs~not only are they MASSIVE in size, but working on these types of dogs can be taxing on the body (especially if the dog weighs more than you! 🏋️‍♀️)

That is why our students are always watched over, taught proper dog handling, and monitored to practice correct body ergonomics and movement 🙋
Hands-on training is essential to learning 📝 Trying to learn online is helpful, but it’s not going to substitute real-world experiences. It’s preferred if there’s someone to guide you through the process of what to do in case a 180lb dog suddenly wants to be fierce or snappy (fortunately St Bernards are known to be calm and gentle).

Dogs are very social animals that can't speak! Did you know that they are trying to communicate with you thru licking? Here are some reasons of what they might be trying to tell you. 👅

1️⃣Licking Lips: they’re trying to send a signal to you that they're worried. The dog is trying to show that they are stressed, uncomfortable, or feel threatened.
2️⃣Licking Paws: something is irritating their paws. Some examples could be allergies (from what they stepped on) or something is stuck between their paw pads 🐾
3️⃣ Licking Face: you taste nice! Likely because you finished eating those yummy 🌮 15 min earlier and their crazy sense of smell can still sniff it on you.
4️⃣ Licking the floor/objects: could be food or crumbs still in the carpet/floor. Otherwise it could be signs of showing anxiety.
