Meet Dr. Terry Boretti

The first love of my life was the veterinary medicine. Treating sick animals was all I wanted to do since very early age. I was born in Brazil, graduated from Universidade Federal Fluminense, Rio de Janeiro in 1979. For the first year after graduation, I worked with cows in large farms on the west part of Sao Paulo state and Mato Grosso state. Soon after, I got involved wit

h horses and never looked back again. Horses seem so easy to treat, they “talk” to you and they want so much to live, that the majority of them respond amazingly well to treatments. I had an ambulatory practice for a little more than 20 years, when I moved to America. My interests are Reproduction, Internal Medicine, Dentistry, Preventive Medicine and Emergencies, although I enjoy all aspects of the ambulatory practice. My personal interests are hiking, biking, swimming on the ocean and the outdoor activities.

Equine Herpesvirus myeloencephalopathy (EHM) has been detected in multiple horses in several counties in CA. To reduce disease spread, the CA State Veterinarian recommends that all hunter/jumper events (the most affected group) be postponed for the next 28 days; all equine events be postponed for the next 14 days and all non-essential horse movements postponed for at least 14 days.

Colts and fillies will be coming soon! It is important to have your mare vaccinated 1 month prior the delivery date or 2 months if she is not current on her vaccinations (2 doses). That will make her colostrum be "rich" in antibodies, helping you raise a healthy baby.

A reminder for all my clients and horse lovers: it is time for the fall vaccines. Remember, vaccines are cheaper than having your horse sick and being treated. When done by a veterinarian, good quality vaccines are guaranteed. Call to schedule an appointment for your horse(s).

Gilroy alert: mosquitos carrying West Nile virus were found in Gilroy. Protect your horse, by giving him/her the vaccine. Keep your herd protected and safe from diseases that we are able to prevent. Remember, vaccines are way cheaper than getting the disease, are "smarter" and less suffering for your horse.

Mules, are our patient as well. This one is a gorgeous 20 days old, very friendly and well bred as you can see. Just a reminder that there was an outbreak of Influenza in San Jose. Influenza is highly contagious and it is a reportable disease. Donkeys and mules are susceptible as well and can get very sick from the disease. Please, vaccinate your horses, donkeys and burros, it is safer, smarter and cheaper!

Since the business was opened, Reins and Cheval Veterinary Services have been doing a Low Cost Gelding Clinic to help people that cannot afford the procedure. We missed 2020 due to Covid. We have been lucky to count with Dr. Richard McCormick (Valley Equine Hospital), with his experience and knowledge. "One Horse at a Time" from Kentucky helped with a donation, making it even cheaper for the owners. We are all grateful.

Alert: a case of Equine Herpesvirus (EHV1) was confirmed positive on Santa Clara County on a 21 year old mare. EHV is a common DNA virus that occurs worldwide in horse populations. The virus are named by numbers, which the 1, 3 and 4 posing the most risk for horses. The most common, 1 and 4, can cause abortion, respiratory and neurologic disease. Keep your horses vaccinated, prevention is smarter, cheaper and safer for the horse.

Horses need a companion. Being herd animals, they lack the presence of other horses. It is important for them to see, smell, hear and interact with other group members. Being build for open spaces, they are not much flexible like a cat or dog, so the grooming that companions provide to them are crucial for their well being. If you own a horse, please, provide him/her with a buddy. Their health will thank you.

Deworming: A lot changed in recent years about deworming. In the past, it was acceptable to deworm every 2 months or so and "rotate" the dewormer. Recently, this approach is considered very wrong. Today, we check the parasite load of each horse to decide how many times a year each horse needs dewormer, from none to two, in general. Each horse is different, each farm as well.
The resistance to dewormer is a serious danger that is already happening. Please, help fight this situation, (global worming!) by talking to your veterinarian and taking the correct steps for your horse, your property.
