Thank you Gray Ghost Designs & Gifts for the nice write up about our recent intake Ariel and her foster, Deborah Thompson!

🐾 Some rescues get a second chance at life. Some only get a second chance at love. 💙

Ariel spent her final days not in a cold shelter, but wrapped in warmth, kindness, and the love of a foster who refused to let her leave this world alone. Debrah Thompson has dedicated 20+ years to saving Weimaraners, and while some stories break hearts, they also remind us why fostering matters.

Read Ariel’s story and honor the work of fosters like Debrah. And if you’ve ever thought about fostering, let this be your sign. One dog. One home. One life changed forever. 🐾💙

Tucker has great news! He went back to visit Dr Mueller, who did his surgery, and has been given the all clear. No more CONE! Stitches are all out! He is allowed to move around freely.

Thanks to the entire team as West LA VCA and our volunteer extraordinaire, Erica, who bailed him out and sat with him for 3 hours until intake at VCA just two weeks ago. Everyone was so happy to see a happy, healthy dog with an outgoing personality today.

He is ready for a new family to call his own. He is a bit protective of his toys, so we do not want to place him with small children. He is good with other dogs, but needs his family to work with him at feeding time if there are other dogs around. Please fill out an adoption application for Tucker at www.socalweimrescue.org.

🚨FOSTERS WANTED🚨

We've certainly had an exciting start to the year and now that the calendar has ticked over into February, it seems to be raining surrenders all of a sudden. We have the potential to be receiving almost TEN DOGS in the coming days/weeks.

As a 100% volunteer-based rescue with no kennel facility, we rely on fosters to open up their homes for the dogs coming into our care. Can you help? Even if only for a few weeks, it helps buy us time to coordinate homes/schedules/adopters.

If you can help us foster, the first step is to fill out the volunteer form so we can get an idea of location/type of home (dogs, no dogs, cats, kids, etc.) and we'll handle the rest! Food, supplies, etc. are covered by the rescue. What we ask of fosters is to provide input on the dog's temperament, give them a safe place to (temporarily) call home, and meet with potential adopters (we will send adopters your way as we receive them and vet them).

Questions? Concerns? On the fence? We'll be happy to chat more!

TUCKER UPDATE

Though we are still reeling from the loss of Ariel, we take comfort in Tucker's progress. He's very much thriving with his foster and continues to heal. He's broken into the toy box and continues to relish his time in every sun patch he can find.

Thank you for all of your donations so far towards his whopping vet bill, we are very appreciative!!

A LETTER FROM ARIEL'S FOSTER

Taking in a homeless, sick or abused dog is the ultimate in rewards. You get to see them grow and blossom…and you get to fall in love. How long does that take after meeting them? Literally minutes. My latest foster was taken out of a shelter super sick with upper respiratory distress blowing green bubbles from her nose and foam from her mouth. I fell in love with this senior the moment I laid eyes on her as she walked from the loud, barking nasty cold jail cell into my warm loving arms. Fearful and tail tucked, I knew I was going to change that. I sang to her during her car ride to my house. Not sure she liked that but I was feeling pretty good about saving her. I just knew she would turn around and rally.

The shelter claimed she was 8 but her appearance told me otherwise. At least 10 to 12. She could barely walk, could barely breathe, had the frosted senior face we all adore…but was deathly ill. We vetted her, hand fed meds and syringed fluids. Loved on her and hugged her. Covered her and talked to her. Looked into her eyes and said “I LOVE YOU!” She LOVED the sun on her face during the day. Her tail started to come out from between her legs as she grew more comfortable and at ease. Then, miracle, her tail was wagging!!!! There was so much hope for her.

Three days later, this morning, she is gone. Ariel went peacefully in her sleep last night. Tucked in warm and cozy her breathing actually seemed better in the evening. Last night I knew. I KNEW! It was different. She had just come from the vet, a whole new bag of meds just bought but there were now sighs and little moans. And then at 5:00 am there just wasn’t. The last breath came and I crashed. I folded. I cried. I failed. But in the end I knew she was destined to leave this world and play with all her friends at the Rainbow Bridge. She is in a better place and will welcome all the others that will come after her. AND FOR ME! I KNOW she will be there!

FOSTER!!!! It is incredibly mind blowing, rewarding, sad and happy all at the same time. We lose some and know they have at least gone with us instead of in the shelter thrown away like trash. Ariel was taken away by Laps Of Love and will forever live with us. My heart is broken but there are pieces left for the next…the next and even the next.

NOW THINK OF ALL OF THE ONES WE CAN SAVE!!!!

Written with love...Deborah

If you made it this far down the post, we thank you enormously for your support for her care and we'll be closing down the fundraiser. Please hug your babies extra tight tonight.

ARIEL UPDATE

Today Ariel is at the vet getting a thorough work up. She weighed in at a mere 42 pounds which is almost 10 pounds less than her shelter intake weight 😥. So far we’ve confirmed pneumonia but we are getting chest x-rays to rule out tumors and we’ve discovered she has multiple ulcers in her mouth. She’s getting IV fluids, pain meds & antibiotics and we’re getting blood work done.

She’s offered up some tail wags and remains very sweet despite all this chaos in her life. She’s not out of the woods yet but we are doing our best to care for this sweet soul.

Now we hesitate to ask for more help after our big ask for Tucker but the vet bills are starting to add up for Ms. Ariel ($1.1K as of this post with more cost to come once lab work and x-rays are back) so we’ve officially opened a fundraiser for her. If you feel inspired we’d be grateful for any help. ❤️

We will keep you posted with her progress!!

MEET ARIEL

Unfortunately when it rains, it pours. We have another intake in rough shape.

Yesterday we exited this sweet girl from SEACCA shelter merely a day before a scheduled euthanasia. As you can tell from the pictures, nearly all of her hair is gone, she's quite skinny, is battling an upper respiratory infection, and her nails and ears are in rough shape. Despite her condition (see video in comments), she seems to be a very sweet girl. The shelter estimated her at 8 years old but her foster believes she may be older. Heck, we're not even sure she's a weimaraner yet (listed as a "pointer mix" by the shelter)! All we know is we're going to do our best to get her healthy and into a loving home.

Sweet Ariel is not yet available for adoption, we will keep you updated as we get to know her better and is healthy enough for a new home. In the meantime, she is clean, safe and snuggled in her foster home.

ANOTHER TUCKER UPDATE:

Tucker is officially at his medical foster’s house continuing his recovery with his fellow blue foster brother. The vet continued to be happy with the outcome as of this morning. We lucked out with an awesome surgeon who has done many of these same surgeries in her career (and even 5 recently)!

So, now, to pay the bill 🙂. Options to donate are in the original post below, even $1 helps!!

TUCKER UPDATE:

Doctor who performed his surgery called and said things went very well. He has three surgery sites but there was nothing unusual in the abdomen so he should recover well. He should be ready to go to his medical foster as early as tomorrow afternoon.

MEET TUCKER

We have officially received our first serious medical case of the year and we are asking for your help. We are currently committed to $15,000 in treatment costs for this sweet boy and need a special adopter once he's healthy.

Long Beach Animal Control alerted us to a weimaraner that was brought in as a stray by a good samaritan with a huge perineal mass. Without a rescue exit by yesterday afternoon, he was on track for euthanasia so we stepped up. Our wonderful volunteer, Erica Klein Johns, exited this sweet boy and took him to VCA LA right away. He is scheduled for surgery this morning with a few days of hospitalization afterwards.

The Good News:
🌟 This is an absolutely beautiful, sweet boy that deserves a second chance
🌟 So far we have not heard anything from the vet that would indicate anything other than a good outcome for this surgery

The Bad News:
❓Since he was found as a stray, we don't know an actual age or history. We think he is around seven years old.
❓ We need a special home for him once he’s healed, adopters welcome to apply! socalweimrescue.org/adopt

Can you help give sweet Tucker his second chance?

!!!!!We are in the middle of Armageddon like times!!!!!!

From Hurricanes, snowstorms to high winds and now to the devastating fires. Everyone is in some sort of turmoil with loss and heartbreak. We at SoCal Weimaraner Rescue are reaching out to our fosters, adopters and followers to please let the Emergency Teams working the Fires know if you are available to families who might need temporary fosters for their animals. I'm not just talking Weimaraners here. SO many animals are displaced and people are having trouble finding housing in the now competitive rental market not allowing pets. If you have dog friendly pets and have a little space maybe you can help. Here is a list of Shelters currently helping animals on a short term basis. These places will "go away" once things are under control. After things are sorted out and those who have a total loss of their home need help with longer term fosters..many will have no choice except to surrender their animals to already over full shelters. Maybe you can help one family at least be able to get their lives together and then be able to get their beloved pet back. Reach out to any of these shelters if you can help and let them know you are an available resource.

On a personal note for SoCal Weimaraner Rescue, one of our very good past fosters, Sarah Parker, totally lost her home. She has dogs and kids. We want to extend our condolences and prayers to her and her family. This one hits home for us because Sarah has fostered over 8 dogs for us, one having bloat, while in her care. She saved his life. If Anakin's adopter, Javier Fernandez, is following, Sarah literally saved his life knowing the signs of bloat. Put her in your thoughts and prayers.

Here is the Shelter list of Resources of Shelters offering Animal Assistance. (stolen from our sister Rescue NorCal Weimaraner Rescue)

Support SoCal Weimaraner Rescue this GivingTuesday!

In the first eleven months of 2024 alone, SoCal Weimaraner Rescue took in over 60 dogs, averaging 6 per month with 0 months where we didn’t have an intake. The majority of these dogs were owner surrenders (51%) with intakes from shelters or strays in a close second (31%). We rely on our network of volunteers, fosters and donors to support these efforts and ensure every dog that comes through our program gets their happy ending.
