The Equine Center welcomed a new arrival this weekend. This first time mom, or "Maiden Mare" has taken to parenting very quickly!
Abscess season has arrived! Make sure to check your horse's feet regularly and have a plan in place. Let us know if you would like to learn more about abscesses or any other subject!
This sweet girl had a screw stuck in her hoof! After taking a radiograph to make sure it didn’t hit any important structures, the screw was removed and the hole was flushed with an antiseptic solution. See how the fluid is coming out from between her heel bulbs?! The screw caused an abscess tract that ruptured at the heel. Nails, screws, wire etc can cause serious trauma to the hoof. Never try to pull them out without consulting your veterinarian first! It’s best to take a radiograph with the object still in the foot. Check your horses feet daily and make sure your pastures are free of sharp objects! Have you ever had a horse that stepped on a nail? #equinevet #vetmedicine #equinetherapy #equinefootcare
"Doc, there is food coming out of his nose!"
This poor horse choked on some hay! We were able to clear the esophageal obstruction with high pressure water through our endoscope. Unfortunately it had been in there for a while and ulcerated the esophagus. Ouch! Choke (esophageal obstruction) is a medical emergency! Have you ever had this happen to your horse?
