❗️EQUINE HEALTH ALERT❗️

The California Department of Food and Agriculture just released the following health alert.

January 17, 2025: A 15-year-old Thoroughbred mare from San Luis Obispo County displaying neurologic signs was confirmed positive for Equine Herpesvirus Myeloencephalopathy (EHM) secondary to Equine Herpesvirus-1 (EHV-1). The mare is alive and under veterinary care at an off-site veterinary hospital. Forty (40) potentially exposed horses at the home premise in San Luis Obispo County were quarantined on January 17th with enhanced biosecurity measures implemented. There had been no recent history of travel on or off these premises by the clinical horse and no other horses on the home premises currently have any clinical symptoms.

We are excited to share a number of significant updates about our practice that will enhance the care and services we provide to you and your horses.
First, we are beyond thrilled to announce that Dr. Emily Bardo has returned to The Equine Center!
Dr. Bardo, a familiar and trusted face, will begin seeing regular appointments in February. Her expertise and dedication to equine care have been a cornerstone of our practice, we are delighted to welcome her back.
Additionally, TEC founder Dr. James Waldsmith has made the decision to step back from veterinary practice and sell The Equine Center. He will be focusing on his imaging company Vetel Diagnostics. The Equine Center is now proudly part of the Loomis Basin Equine Medical Group, a distinguished network of over 50 veterinary professionals focused on equine care with 10 locations up and down California.
This new partnership brings several exciting benefits our clients:
1. Access to more specialized and advanced equipment
2. Access to a wide range of equine veterinary specialists
3. Reduced pricing on many routine medications purchased directly through the clinic, including Adequan®, Gastrogard®, Legend®, Prascend®, and Equioxx®
Your trusted veterinarians, Dr. Emily Bardo and Dr. Vasil Yordanov, will remain the core of The Equine Center. Dr. Jeff Hall will continue to provide weekend on-call support as needed. All our veterinarians will continue to provide the personalized care you’ve come to expect. During busier times of the year, we will welcome visiting doctors and specialists to ensure all your horse’s needs are met promptly and effectively. Our practice manager Christopher Panarites, will continue to oversee and manage day-to-day operations.
We are working hard to ensure a smooth transition, while still providing the high-quality care you’ve come to expect from us. As with any significant change, we anticipate some kinks will need to be worked out. We kindly ask for your patience while we make this transition.
We understand you may have questions and we encourage you to reach out to us via text, phone or email (805.541.6367 or [email protected]).
We are happy to discuss any concerns and provide additional details about our transition.
Thank you for your continued trust and support. We are confident these changes will allow us to serve you better and provide even greater care for your horses.

Have you heard the old adage, "no hoof no horse"? It still rings true today. The hoof is a complex makeup of structures built to withstand tremendous forces and adapt to varying terrains and environmental conditions. However, without proper care it can be the cause for many soundness issues. Routine and correct farrier work is essential for hoof health, but there are many internal structures of the hoof that can only be seen via radiographs, such as the navicular bone. Having radiographs of your horse’s feet provides valuable information for you, your farrier and your veterinarian. For the month of November we will be offering 50% off front foot x-rays! Give us a call to take advantage of this special.

Halloween may be spooky but let's be honest, there is nothing scarier than your horse coming up lame! 😱The hoof is a complex structure and there is so much more to it than the eye can see. Knowing what's going on beneath the surface can provide valuable insight for you, your veterinarian and your farrier. Call our office at 805-541-6367 to take advantage of this special! 🎃👻

Two more weeks to take advantage of our stifle special! If your horse has difficulty picking up the correct lead behind, trouble transitioning from trot to canter or from canter to trot, dragging a hind toe and cantering in a “bunny hopping” manner, it may be a good idea to get some stifle radiographs taken. For those of you with young horses, this is also the perfect time to get some baseline images done before the c**t starting season starts up! Contact us today to get on the schedule.

This month we are offering a radiograph special on the most complex joint in your horses body, 25% off stifle rads! Many people think of the stifle as just a singular joint but did you know that the stifle is the most complex joint system in a horse’s body? It is made up of four bones: the femur, tibia, patella and a nonfunctioning remnant fibula that is fused to the tibia. The bones work together through three joints: the medial (inner) femorotibial joint, the lateral (outer) femorotibial joint and the femoropatellar joint (the joint between the femur and patella), which are all built to absorb shock and move your horse. The stifle also consists of 14 ligaments that bind and stabilize the joint as well as two menisci which are cartilage-like discs that act as a cushion between the femur and tibia.
The stifle allows a horse to extend and flex their hind leg, it also has a “passive-stay” mechanism that essentially locks the patella in place and allows horses to sleep standing up and bear weight on just one hind leg while the other can completely relax.
All horses can be at risk for stifle issues, especially western performance horses, sport horses, and horses that have straight hind-leg conformation. As diagnostics have advanced, veterinarians are discovering that this joint is the source of pain more often than previously realized. Some symptoms of stifle problems are difficulty picking up the correct lead behind, trouble transitioning from trot to canter or from canter to trot, dragging a hind toe and cantering in a “bunny hopping” manner. If you think your horse is exhibiting any of these symptoms or you just want to get baseline images, don’t hesitate to contact us and take advantage of the 25% off stifle radiographs for the month of October!

With fall being right around the corner now is the perfect time to start thinking about parasite control and your deworming protocol. Parasites have specific life cycles, making their activity vary throughout the year. The larvae and eggs of certain parasites are generally more abundant in both the spring and the fall. As a result, it’s important to target parasites during these periods when your horse is most susceptible. Here are some tips and tricks to help with parasite control. In addition, we are also going to be offering 50% off of f***l tests for the month of September! Give us a call today to get your horses on the schedule.
